“So poor…”
Looking at the balance in his account, Bai Yao was so distressed he could almost cry.
This was all the living money he had earned by completing tasks with great difficulty!
As it turned out, paying the deposit for Qiu Ye had delivered a heavy blow to his wallet, and combined with the food expenses from the past few days, his balance was now under 100.
He picked up Qiu Ye’s phone, unlocked it directly with a facial scan, and opened the account app.
“You’re so poor, too.”
Forget about the phone password—he even knew Qiu Ye’s payment password now.
Qiu Ye had already changed into casual clothes, having prepared to be discharged from the hospital.
Perhaps because he was young and strong, he had recovered very well.
Although his left arm was still immobile, the examination showed no postoperative complications.
Aside from his hair being a bit messy, he basically didn’t look like an injured person on the surface.
“Luckily I have medical insurance.”
Qiu Ye looked at the frowning Bai Yao and laughed optimistically.
“It’s fine! Follow me and I guarantee you won’t starve!”
“Whose fault do you think it is?”
Bai Yao’s face tightened as he coldly picked up a bag of luggage and shoved it directly into Qiu Ye’s hand.
“You carry it.”
“I’m a patient!”
He completely ignored the protest and walked straight out of the ward.
Qiu Ye had no choice but to follow him out of the room, carrying the luggage in his right hand.
“Hey — we’ve skipped class for several days. I wonder if Brother Long helped us with the roll call.”
“I’ve never skipped a class…”
Since the start of the semester, Bai Yao had arrived at every class on time.
Even though he spent the lectures playing on his phone, his attendance attitude was at least at its peak.
He had been this way since he was a child.
From elementary school to high school graduation, the number of times he’d asked for leave probably didn’t even exceed three, and he had never been late even once.
This made the few days of skipping class feel particularly anxiety-inducing.
“Oh! Is the little handsome guy being discharged today?”
A nurse he recognized walked toward them and greeted them with a smile.
Bai Yao was a bit face-blind and didn’t recognize her, so he could only nod awkwardly as a greeting.
“That’s right, I was dying of boredom in the hospital,” Qiu Ye replied, stepping forward to chat with the nurse naturally.
“I won’t be a bother to you all anymore.”
“How could you be? Does your arm still hurt?”
“It doesn’t hurt as long as I don’t move it.”
Bai Yao really envied Qiu Ye’s ability to chat with anyone.
During the past two days in the ward, whenever a nurse or doctor came in, he would just play on his phone and pretend to be dead.
He completely lacked the decisive and vigorous style he’d shown when taking Qiu Ye to the emergency room a few days ago.
Meanwhile, Qiu Ye seemed to get along with everyone.
After all, he was handsome — it gave people a great first impression.
He wasn’t like Bai Yao, who was cursed by the system to look like a girl; there were probably a lot of people who found him eyesores.
“Then I’ll get back to work.”
“Bye — have a good shift —”
After a brief chat, the nurse went back to her duties, and Qiu Ye approached Bai Yao’s side with a grin.
“Let’s go,” he whispered, complaining under his breath.
“When that nurse was drawing my blood, she poked me several times before she actually found the vein.”
“Uh…”
“Help me hold this for a second, I need to make a call.”
Bai Yao helped him take the heavy luggage bag.
His shoulder sank, and his footsteps became a bit staggered.
Qiu Ye, however, pulled out his phone and suddenly quickened his pace, staying about 2 meters ahead while looking back with a mischievous smirk.
Only then did he realize he had been tricked.
He didn’t bother to argue and just silently rolled his eyes.
‘Damn it! You ungrateful wolf! And to think I’ve been so good to him these past few days!’
Now Bai Yao was even starting to worry if Qiu Ye would dodge his debts…
It was a familiar plot! His best friend in high school had been the same way.
Even though he had treated that friend with total sincerity and even lent him several hundred dollars, the guy had played a disappearing act after graduation.
Why was it always like this? Whenever someone treated him even slightly well, he couldn’t wait to give them his heart and soul in the hopes of being a better friend, yet he was let down every single time.
“Why aren’t you catching up?”
But after only a few steps, Qiu Ye returned to Bai Yao’s side with a bored expression.
“Give it to me, you’re no fun to tease.”
Evidently, Bai Yao was being too sensitive and overthinking things.
Qiu Ye was simply being childish…
Bai Yao turned his head away expressionlessly.
Leaving the inpatient department, the morning sun was bright and warm.
Qiu Ye stood in the sunlight, comfortably straightening his back and stretching his neck.
He hadn’t seen much sun lately and felt like his bones were rusting.
After soaking in the sun for a bit, he felt alive again!
Qiu Ye turned back to Bai Yao, who was still standing in the shade of the eaves.
“Did you call the car?”
“Yeah.”
Bai Yao squatted down where he was, waiting for the ride-hailing car to arrive.
The hospital was only a few kilometers from the school.
Calling a car cost a bit over 10 dollars, and there happened to be a discount.
Qiu Ye scurried back into the shade and squatted on the steps next to Bai Yao.
“About the last few days… thanks.”
Bai Yao froze for a moment, looking at Qiu Ye, who was thanking him with a serious face.
Perhaps a serious style didn’t suit Qiu Ye, as he looked a bit fidgety.
He scratched the back of his head, his voice dropping a few notches.
“Anyway, I wouldn’t have known what to do without you… If you need anything in the future, just let me know.”
“Pay me back.”
Qiu Ye immediately lost his serious composure.
“Hey! Are you some kind of money-grubber? I already said I’d pay you back when next month’s living expenses arrive. I’ll even cover your meals this month, I guarantee you’ll eat better than me!”
Bai Yao pursed his lips but couldn’t help himself.
The corners of his mouth curled up slightly, and he had to lower his head to hide his snicker, his slender shoulders trembling.
He laughed reservedly.
His eyes curved like crescents, and his pupils shimmered with the mottled sunlight.
His smile was playful, cute, gentle, and healing.
Qiu Ye stared blankly.
That smile seemed even warmer than the sun, dispelling his physical and mental fatigue.
He felt subconsciously invigorated, and his mood became a bit more pleasant and relaxed.
Sensing Qiu Ye’s lingering gaze, Bai Yao immediately put on a cold face and stood up.
“The car is almost here.”
“Oh.”
Qiu Ye stood up as well.
“To be honest, if you smiled more, you’d definitely find a girlfriend.”
“No money, no energy.”
Bai Yao rubbed his temples, feeling a headache.
“I’m exhausted from these past few days. I had to deal with strangers every day, and taking care of you was a huge pain.”
He hated dealing with strangers, hated talking, and hated any kind of trouble or things he wasn’t good at.
Having forced himself through it for so many days, his energy was depleted.
He was so tired he just wanted to go back to the dorm and have a good sleep, finding a quiet place to rest for a few days.
“My bad, my bad.”
The car arrived just then.
Qiu Ye grabbed the luggage and ran to the car first, opening the door.
“Princess, please get in.”
“Get lost!”
‘Damn it! Childish brat! He was only serious for a second.’
Bai Yao gave him a sharp glare and ducked into the car first.
“Watch your arm.”
“Don’t worry.”
He gave the driver the last four digits of his phone number, held his stomach, and leaned against the car door with his knees together, closing his eyes to rest.
This slightly defensive resting posture gave him a bit more of a young girl’s fragility.
Qiu Ye had long since stopped finding Bai Yao’s feminine mannerisms strange.
Sometimes, in a daze, he would even truly believe this was just a gentle girl.
A person gentler than the vast majority of people.
