Maybe it was the anesthesia or the painkillers, but on her first night in the hospital, Bai Yao slept pretty well.
Though her parents had probably been anxious all night, and her boyfriend had been up tossing and turning too.
Bai Yao was woken up by the sunlight.
She squinted, instinctively raising her hand to block the harsh light.
The moment she moved, pain shot through every part of her body, and she couldn’t help but whimper.
They didn’t even close the curtains.
“Hiss~ It hurts so much, it hurts so much.”
Maybe this level of pain wouldn’t have been a big deal before, but ever since she encountered the System and got that sensitive body, she couldn’t bear anything, whether it was pleasure or pain.
Bai Yao whimpered softly, her eyes reddening from the pain.
She turned her head to look around the hospital room and found that both her mother and father were nowhere to be seen.
She needed to pee.
She’d never liked bothering others, let alone over something this embarrassing.
Lying flat on the bed in an awkward position, she had no choice but to endure it.
She couldn’t even reach over to place the laptop from the bedside table onto her blanket.
She picked up her phone and fiddled with it to distract herself.
But when she tried to lift her neck to get a better view of the computer screen, even the slightest effort sent pain through her whole body.
“Ugh~”
Her expression couldn’t help but fall, feeling like she’d become a useless person.
The sky was falling…
Although Bai Yao didn’t agree with her parents’ value system of putting face above all else, it had inevitably influenced her.
Asking someone to help her use the bathroom, imposing on others, and having greasy, tangled hair in a few days—all of that felt shameful to her.
Not to mention she was now a daughter.
To her parents, she who had once been burdened with carrying on the family line would one day become someone else’s wife.
Thinking about that, a fresh wave of guilt toward her parents washed over Bai Yao.
Seriously.
The pain combined with the hurt from her spiraling thoughts.
Since there was no one else in the hospital room anyway, Bai Yao’s lips trembled into a wavy line.
In the end, she couldn’t hold it in and silently hid under the covers, letting her tears fall.
How did she even get into a car accident?
She’d always been careful when crossing the road.
‘I’m not at fault, am I? After all, I didn’t use the crosswalk…’
The family didn’t have much money to begin with.
If the medical bills and hospitalization costs all came out of the family’s pocket, that would be a huge burden, right?
The more she cried, the more her thoughts spiraled.
The more her thoughts spiraled, the more aggrieved she felt and wanted to cry.
Bai Yao gradually broke into soft sobs, tears blurring her vision.
Finally, footsteps sounded from outside the hospital room.
Then the door opened, and a familiar voice came through.
“Bai Yao?”
Bai Yao frantically wiped away her tears and looked up with red-rimmed eyes.
It was Qiu Ye…
“You, why aren’t you taking the exam?”
Bai Yao tried her best to look calm, but her voice still came out choked with tears.
Seeing that there were no parents in the room, Qiu Ye relaxed.
The cautious expression faded as he walked over to sit by the bed, gently and worriedly stroking Bai Yao’s head.
“I didn’t take the exam yesterday afternoon anyway. I’ll just do a make-up exam next semester.”
“Why were you crying?”
Bai Yao couldn’t hold it together anymore, and tears streamed down her face again.
“Qiu Ye… I need someone to help me use the bathroom.”
Seeing her cry like that, Qiu Ye’s nose also stung fiercely.
But as a man, Qiu Ye’s performance yesterday had already been terrible, and he’d even let the injured patient comfort his feelings.
Today, he held it back with all his might, trying his best to give Bai Yao a sense of security.
“I don’t mind.”
Qiu Ye tried to lift Bai Yao’s spirits.
“I actually think it’s kinda cute!”
Cute…
Bai Yao immediately realized what Qiu Ye was talking about.
Even as she cried, her face flushed red.
She turned her head away in embarrassment.
“I… need to go to the bathroom.”
Admittedly, Bai Yao really was like a little girl.
The petite, flat-chested type, not even fully grown, youthful yet alluring, like she’d stepped right out of a doujinshi.
Of course, a B-cup was about average in real life.
It’s just that Bai Yao had a narrow frame, and her chest stood firm like bamboo shoots without appearing large.
“Have you eaten?”
After helping Bai Yao use the bathroom, Qiu Ye took out disinfectant wipes and cleaned her up before asking.
Bai Yao’s face was bright red, too embarrassed to look up at him, and she muttered quietly.
“Not really hungry.”
Mainly because she was scared, in case she needed to take a big one.
“Eat a bit less for the next few days.”
“Once you recover enough to use the bathroom on your own, then we’ll talk about it.”
“Bai Yao! Time for your check-up!”
Her mother’s voice came from outside the room.
She pushed the door open and immediately spotted Qiu Ye scrambling to his feet.
She gave Qiu Ye a suspicious look, then glanced at her blushing daughter, but didn’t think much of it.
“In half an hour, you need to go for a check-up.”
“Mm, got it.”
Bai Yao kept a stiff expression and answered guiltily.
She changed the subject.
“You guys haven’t done anything, so why do you look so guilty~”
“Going back now. He’s busy at work. Where’s Dad?”
Her mother frowned and complained.
“He’s at work every single day, but I’ve never seen him bring a single cent home.”
From what Bai Yao knew, ever since her father’s business failed five or six years ago, the household expenses had all been covered by her mother’s salary of three to four thousand a month.
Whether it was Bai Yao’s car accident hospitalization now or the yearly insurance premiums in the past, whenever they asked her father for money, he always said he had none, that he’d have to borrow it, and somehow managed to drag it out for at least a week.
“Xiao Ye, since you’re here, could you help out with something?”
“Sure!”
Qiu Ye flashed a bright, sunny smile.
“Sorry for the trouble. Aren’t you taking an exam today?”
“No trouble at all.”
Qiu Ye waved his hand dismissively.
“I’m a good student, it’s fine.”
The main thing was that he’d already turned in his final assignment early.
He just needed Chen Zhilong to sign off on it.
As for the other exam subjects, well, he really would have to take make-up exams.
“Want some fruit?”
Her mother sat by the bed, peeling the apple into long ribbons of skin with a fruit knife.
“Xiao Ye, are you and Bai Yao roommates?”
“Yeah, roommates. Bai Yao and I are really close.”
“Do you often take her out to have fun?”
Qiu Ye had a fawning, sycophantic look, trying to build a good relationship with his future mother-in-law before revealing his identity.
Bai Yao frowned at the sight, both feeling it was unnecessary and feeling bad for Qiu Ye.
“You two might not be roommates next semester.”
Her mother sighed.
“Let’s see the check-up results first.”
Clearly, her mother thought Bai Yao’s QQ had been deleted because of the car accident.
After all, her pelvis was fractured from the impact, let alone her more delicate little brother down there.
Her mother cut the peeled apple into small pieces and held one out to Bai Yao’s mouth with the knife.
“I don’t want it.”
“Eat some fruit, you’ll recover faster.”
Bai Yao had no choice but to bite down on the apple piece.
Her mother cut another piece and offered it to Qiu Ye.
“Thanks, Auntie~”
“Look at him, so polite.”
Her mother asked Qiu Ye curiously.
“Xiao Ye, you’re so tall and handsome. You must have a girlfriend, right?”
“Uh… yeah, I do.”
Her mother let out a small sigh of relief.
She’d been worried this man had his eye on her daughter.
So she turned back to Bai Yao and grumbled.
“Look at how long your hair is. Go get it cut soon. You look like a girl. What’s that supposed to look like? Aren’t you embarrassed going out like that?”
“Mom, I’m about to actually become a girl.”
Her mother’s expression stiffened, and she muttered quietly.
“That’s not certain yet. Let’s run the tests first.”
