“How is it?”
In the corridor outside the consultation room, Qiu Ye had just pushed the door open and stepped out when Bai Yao rushed forward to ask.
“The doctor said my body is in good shape and I’m recovering exceptionally well.”
Qiu Ye triumphantly raised his left arm.
“Anyway, moving around is fine, as long as I don’t carry anything heavy.”
“That’s good.”
“Let’s go, it’s your turn.”
The concerned look on Bai Yao’s face immediately withered, and he followed dejectedly behind Qiu Ye toward the hospital’s Clinical Laboratory Blood Collection Center.
“What’s wrong? You don’t want the check-up now? The money’s already been paid.”
At the mention of money, Bai Yao’s expression tightened.
“Fine.”
‘This is all money I earned by sacrificing my dignity, flirting with men, and wearing little skirts!’
If he didn’t go through with the physical exam now, that money would truly be wasted.
But while he called it hard work, he had looked at other part-time job listings lately.
They were all either too exhausting or paid too little…
Once someone started earning quick money through such “crooked” paths, it was difficult to look back at those meager wages.
This hospital was located in the suburbs, and since it was a Friday workday, there weren’t too many patients in the blood collection center.
Bai Yao swiped his card and found a seat.
With his arms propped on his thighs and his chin resting in his hands, he stared longingly at the blood collection window, waiting for his number to be called.
Playing on his phone nearby, Qiu Ye asked, “You’re not scared, are you?”
“What is there to be scared of?”
Bai Yao tended to talk more when he was with Qiu Ye.
“It’s just that my veins are thin and it’s hard to draw blood… During the Gaokao physical exam, they poked me several times. In the end, they had to take blood from my finger. It hurt like hell.”
Qiu Ye glanced at those white, tender arms and felt a bit of sympathy for the nurse.
After waiting for about ten minutes, Bai Yao heard his name.
He stood up and walked to the window.
As he sat down, he extended a pale, slender arm and placed it on the counter.
The nurse glanced at him, then looked at the information on the computer screen with a slightly confused expression before looking up at the handsome young man standing behind him like a guardian deity.
The nurse didn’t ask many questions.
She skillfully tied the tourniquet around Bai Yao’s arm, her voice gentle and kind.
“Come on, make a tight fist.”
“Okay.”
Seeing the needle, Bai Yao subconsciously tensed his muscles, staring at the point with a hint of nervousness.
“It’s okay, it won’t hurt. Don’t be nervous.”
Seeing such a cute and beautiful person, the nurse’s voice became even softer.
“Let me find your vein…”
Bai Yao only hoped she could hit the mark on the first try.
Fortunately, the nurse was very skilled and got it on the first attempt.
Because there were many items in the check-up, a total of two large tubes of blood were drawn from Bai Yao.
He could clearly feel his strength draining away.
By the time the blood draw was finished, his mind was a bit dazed.
“All right, press down on this for ten minutes.”
Bai Yao pressed the cotton swab against the wound.
Just as he stood up, he staggered backward, leaning against Qiu Ye’s chest.
Qiu Ye was so startled he didn’t dare move, supporting Bai Yao’s arm.
“What’s wrong?”
“Dizzy…”
Fearing that his sickly appearance would cause gossip, Bai Yao quickly shook his head and stood straight, pushing Qiu Ye away slightly.
“It’s nothing. I just have a bit of low blood sugar because they took so much blood.”
Qiu Ye looked up and asked the nurse, “He can eat now, right?”
The nurse glanced at Bai Yao’s information.
“Is there still an Abdominal Ultrasound project? Go eat after you finish that.”
“Should we go do the ultrasound first?”
Fortunately, after a short rest, Bai Yao recovered quite a bit.
He turned his head to look at the urine cups not far away and estimated that he couldn’t go right now.
It was better to do the ultrasound first, then eat and drink plenty of water to get ready for the next test.
“Fine.”
They went up two floors to the ultrasound room.
There were only a few patients waiting in line.
Before long, Bai Yao entered the room.
Following the doctor’s instructions, he lay obediently on the bed, staring awkwardly at the ceiling.
He really disliked lying down and being looked down upon.
It felt as if all his privacy would be exposed, as if he would be seen through…
‘At least my chest is small right now. When I lie down, it’s so flat you can’t even see anything.’
Even when getting his hair washed at the barbershop, he preferred sitting up rather than lying back in those chairs.
“Lift your shirt to just below your chest.”
“Oh.”
Bai Yao lifted his shirt, revealing a flat, slightly soft belly.
An unknown liquid, somewhat viscous and ice-cold, was applied to his stomach.
It made him shiver, and he turned his head toward the doctor uneasily.
However, the doctor didn’t even bother to look at him, keeping his eyes fixed on the equipment.
“Lie still, don’t move around.”
“Okay.”
Bai Yao stared at the ceiling.
He had looked up the check-up items before coming; the abdominal ultrasound was supposed to check the liver and could detect things like Fatty Liver…
The probe, also coated in the viscous liquid, was pressed against his stomach, causing his skin to indent as it moved slowly across him.
It wasn’t too forceful, but it caused Bai Yao a slight bit of pain, making him furrow his brows.
“Huh?”
Bai Yao instinctively looked at the doctor.
He saw the doctor push up his glasses, looking at the equipment screen with uncertainty, then at the computer screen, and finally at him.
The young nurse from the blood draw had reacted the same way.
It gave Bai Yao a mischievous urge to laugh.
‘You’re a doctor, yet you can’t tell if I’m a man or a woman? Your eyesight isn’t very good~’
“Doctor?”
Bai Yao used the respectful term.
“Oh, it’s nothing. Your information is wrong.”
The doctor asked calmly, “Is this your older brother’s information?”
“Huh?”
Bai Yao didn’t know whether to laugh or cry as he tried to explain.
“No… I don’t have a…”
“You gave me a fright. Where would a man get a uterus?”
“…”
Only then did the doctor turn to look at him.
“What did you just say?”
Bai Yao’s face turned pale.
He asked uncertainly, “Do I have any other problems?”
“No, everything is fine. Just remember to go change your information.”
After that, Bai Yao didn’t hear a single word of the doctor’s instructions.
He felt dazed and helpless.
He didn’t continue to ask the doctor if he had made a mistake, but instead drifted out like a ghost.
‘What does this mean? I’m already a girl? When did this happen?’

“Bai Yao? Bai Yao!”
Qiu Ye shook Bai Yao’s shoulder hard.
“What’s wrong with you? Why are you spacing out? Did they actually find something?”
When his detached spirit returned, the first thing he saw was Qiu Ye’s anxious and concerned face.
Bai Yao stared blankly at Qiu Ye.
“Your face looks terrible.”
Qiu Ye’s brow was tightly furrowed, and he was in no mood to joke.
“What is it? It’s not a terminal illness, is it?”
“Huh? No, it’s nothing…”
Bai Yao shook his head dazedly and began to drift toward the hospital exit.
“What are you doing? Aren’t we finishing the check-up? Don’t give up on treatment. Is there any disease that can’t be cured nowadays?”
Qiu Ye quickly caught up.
“Don’t just stay silent, you’re scaring me to death!”
Bai Yao’s footsteps suddenly stopped, and Qiu Ye nearly crashed into his back.
He turned around and gave a slightly complaining smile.
“Let’s go! I’m starving to death, okay? Why would I have the energy to talk to you about this? I told you, it’s fine.”
He had always had a beautiful smile—gentle, refined, and arched at the eyes.
The slight fullness beneath his eyes made it even sweeter, healing like an angel’s.
But Qiu Ye only saw a sense of sorrow in it, like an exquisite piece of porcelain covered in cracks, ready to shatter at any moment.
