If there really is someone directing these Mutant Zombies from behind the scenes, then this person is very likely the Doctor.
He’s been researching the Zombie Virus within the city all this time, so it’s not strange for him to have figured out how to control them.
But he surely doesn’t know that Bai Nian and the others possess special abilities.
The three of them quietly and stealthily left the Survivor Enclave.
On the way, Bai Nian explained softly to the other two, “Before I arrived at the School, I saw a strange Girl watching me. She was in a five-story building not far from the School.”
Shi Gao pondered.
The School was a bit remote, and a five-story building that could overlook the whole School…
He immediately realized, “Are you saying the Doctor is probably hiding there?”
Clearly, the three of them all believed the Doctor was the one orchestrating everything behind the scenes.
As outsiders, they had come to take away the Doctor’s research results.
Perhaps there were other reasons mixed in as well.
In short, the other party didn’t want to leave this place, nor hand over his results.
“Then what are we waiting for? Let’s just go in and kill him, grab the Doctor, and everything will be over!”
Zhang Kun was already itching to act, as if he could already see himself clearing the Third-Tier Disaster Gate.
“No, we have to first make sure the other Survivor Enclave hasn’t been attacked,” Bai Nian said.
The hardest stronghold to breach was, without a doubt, the High-rise.
There was only one entrance, easy to defend and hard to attack.
“If these Mutant Zombies really are being controlled, then the Doctor’s defenses must be extremely tight. Their weakness is Sunlight; we just need to wait until daylight.”
She analyzed. The other two nodded in agreement when they heard this.
“Alright, let’s do that. As expected of Bai Nian—brains on par with mine,” Zhang Kun put on an expression as if he’d thought of this long ago.
Although Mutant Zombies had extremely hard bodies and were frighteningly fast, they were fundamentally not much different from regular zombies.
They still relied on hearing to hunt, and maybe some limited eyesight.
So long as the three of them remained Invisibility and silent, they wouldn’t be discovered at all.
And Bai Nian’s Night Vision ability was now especially useful; she could easily lead the other two to avoid regular zombies and see the map clearly even in pitch darkness.
Soon, the three of them arrived near the High-rise.
A faint light leaked from the cracks in the windows sealed with planks, and all around was deathly silent.
Clearly, the High-rise hadn’t been attacked by Mutant Zombies.
“Now it’s certain—these Mutant Zombies are being controlled,” Bai Nian gazed forward and stated her conclusion.
“Their target should be us.”
“Where are we going now? Are we going straight to the Doctor?”
Zhang Kun asked.
Bai Nian thought for a moment.
“Let’s get closer first, observe the situation, and act at dawn.”
The three changed directions again and headed toward the School.
When they arrived again, it was already the early hours of the morning.
A small five-story building stood quietly here.
Through its boarded-up windows, a faint purple light glimmered from within.
“There’s light there!”
Bai Nian said in a low voice.
“So there really is someone!”
Zhang Kun was overjoyed.
“Can we use Invisibility to sneak in and capture him?”
Shi Gao suggested at that moment.
“I’ll go check things out first. You two wait here.”
With that, Bai Nian left Invisibility on her own and vanished into the darkness.
Shi Gao’s idea was good, but she was worried about that Girl.
No matter how she thought about it, there was no way the Doctor and the Girl would be connected.
And for someone like her to appear in this ruined city, she definitely wasn’t just any ordinary person.
Standing at the base of the building, Bai Nian found it was no different from any of the other structures.
Crumbling walls were smeared with blood and dried bits of flesh, and a rusted rolling shutter tightly sealed off the entrance.
“Only one entrance?”
Bai Nian circled around the building and found there were no other ways in.
She carefully examined the door for any details but found no sign it had been opened.
Uncertain, Bai Nian looked up; the purple glow was still there.
There was no doubt someone was inside, but she couldn’t hear a sound.
If she barged in rashly, it would surely alert whoever was within, and there might be countless Mutant Zombies hidden inside.
Bai Nian carefully retreated.
“How was it?”
Shi Gao asked as soon as she rejoined them.
Bai Nian shook her head.
“No good, let’s hide for now and act at dawn.”
The three entered a nearby house.
From there, they could just observe the opposite building.
There were still a few hours until dawn, so they took turns on watch and rested against the wall.
She didn’t know how much time passed before a voice woke Bai Nian from her rest.
“The light’s gone!”
Shi Gao’s voice rang in her ears.
Bai Nian’s eyes snapped open.
She hurried to the window and peered through the gaps in the boards.
The sky was already turning faintly blue—the omen of approaching dawn.
Staring intently, Bai Nian saw that the purple light on the top floor across the street had indeed vanished.
“Let’s go!”
Shi Gao activated Invisibility, Zhang Kun drew his weapon, and the three quickly left, moving toward the building across the street.
“There could be Mutant Zombies inside. Everyone be careful,” Bai Nian warned.
The other two nodded.
The three of them reached the base of the building and hid themselves against the wall.
Bai Nian took out a grenade, ready to pull the pin at any time; Zhang Kun wielded his broad saber, ready to force their way in.
He extended three fingers and began to count down.
As his hand clenched into a fist, he acted instantly.
With a snap, the lock broke.
Zhang Kun immediately used his blade to pry upward, producing a grating metallic screech as the rolling shutter was forced open.
Just as Bai Nian was about to pull the pin, her gaze cut through the darkness to see the scene inside.
The long-sealed room was thick with dust, reeking of mold.
There was no one inside.
Bai Nian just let out a sigh of relief and was about to step in when she suddenly felt a gaze from behind.
Without thinking, she shouted, “Watch out!”
Bang!
Fist and blade clashed with a muffled thud, and Zhang Kun was sent flying, crashing heavily into the room and smashing the furniture.
That shadow moved swiftly, instantly changing targets and lunging at Shi Gao.
Given his physical abilities, he couldn’t react in time!
Just as the fist was about to hit, Bai Nian darted in front of Shi Gao and punched at the attacker.
Fists collided.
She felt like she’d struck steel, her arm throbbing painfully from the shock.
Under the impact of immense strength, Bai Nian staggered backward and nearly fell, while the other party hadn’t moved an inch.
“Hiss—”
She felt as if her whole arm might fall apart.
But Bai Nian had no time to check her injury.
Her eyes fixed on the figure before her—a person in a black robe, the same height as her.
A large hood hid their face, and slender fingers emerged from sleeves black as ink.
It was the Girl Bai Nian had seen before.
“So you really aren’t a normal person!”
