“Where did Li Qian go?”
Zhang Kun asked in confusion.
The three of them had come to a basic understanding of H City.
They each came from one of the three major Survivor Enclaves; aside from those, it was nearly impossible for any Survivor to have made it in the rest of the city.
And once night fell, Mutant Zombies would appear, making this place even more dangerous.
Right now, finding the Doctor was their main task, but they couldn’t just ignore Li Qian either.
“It’s going to get dark soon,” Bai Nian said, her face grave as she looked out the window.
Li Qian didn’t have Shigao’s ability to hide, nor did she have Zhang Kun’s close combat skills.
If she got surrounded by zombies, escape would be nearly impossible.
“After the explosion at the School earlier, there’s no way she’d go back there. But the tallest Tower in the city is likely to be her choice,” Shi Gao speculated.
“Yeah. With just the three of us, it’ll be hard to find her. Let’s stay here for the night,” Zhang Kun said.
Though everyone was worried about Li Qian’s safety, no one was foolish enough to go combing the zombie-filled city at night like looking for a needle in a haystack.
Inside the doors, you absolutely couldn’t act on impulse.
Truth be told, Zhang Kun was saying this mainly for Bai Nian’s sake.
At least until she had determined the strength of the Mutant Zombies, she wouldn’t act recklessly.
The three quickly found some food and sat down together to eat.
They had only three days; one had already passed without even a glimpse of the Doctor, let alone any confidential files.
The worry was plain on everyone’s faces.
No one wanted to see H City turned into a city of the dead after two days.
Night fell quickly, and the whole hall was plunged into silence.
Dim lights cast over their faces as they leaned against the wall, resting.
Suddenly, a piercing screech tore through the night and reached their ears.
“What was that?!”
Zhang Kun felt goosebumps rise all over his body.
“Should be a Mutant Zombie.”
Bai Nian immediately stood up and walked toward the door.
Standing atop the high wall, she followed her gaze and saw a figure moving in the darkness far away.
It was incredibly fast, leaving only a black afterimage to the naked eye.
At that moment, the Mutant Zombie was sprinting straight towards them.
In an instant, it entered their detection range.
The searchlight flicked on, emitting a blinding purple light.
No matter how fast it was, it couldn’t outrun the light.
The purple glow fixed it in place, and its body began to burn, releasing billows of white vapor.
Bai Nian also saw the true appearance of this creature up close.
It was entirely black, covered in rotting flesh, with no skin, its arms long with clawed nails, and its hideously ruined face even more grotesque.
This didn’t look like a regular zombie at all, but rather some kind of monstrous abomination.
“Is this a Mutant Zombie?”
Shi Gao squinted into the distance.
“Don’t worry. This Survivor Enclave has survived countless nights,” Zhang Kun seemed unconcerned.
But what happened next left all three dumbfounded.
There wasn’t just one Mutant Zombie here.
Suddenly, another black shadow shot out of the darkness and, at incredible speed, slammed into the frozen zombie in front of them.
The latter was knocked clear by the impact, thrown out of the searchlight’s beam, and instantly turned into a black blur as it charged at the trio.
At the same time, more and more shadows began appearing at the enclave’s perimeter, all attacking in concerted force.
“They’re actually working together?!”
Bai Nian exclaimed in shock.
That kind of coordination required intelligence, yet in the dreams of the leaders from both Enclaves, she hadn’t seen any evidence that Mutant Zombies possessed intelligence.
Moreover, their target was clear—it seemed they were aiming directly for this Enclave.
“Should we wake the others and fight together?”
Shi Gao suggested.
There were simply too many Mutant Zombies outside; the three of them probably couldn’t hold out alone.
“This is only the first defensive line,” Zhang Kun said, jumping down and drawing the broad blade from his belt.
The Mutant Zombies, seeing live humans, went berserk and accelerated.
But just as one was about to reach Zhang Kun, the searchlights atop the walls flared to life.
The zombie froze, and Zhang Kun swung his blade at its head.
With a muffled crash, the blade failed to cleave the zombie’s skull.
Instead, the collision sent the creature flying.
“So tough?!”
Zhang Kun’s hands went numb from the impact.
Bai Nian was momentarily stunned too, then quickly drew her pistol and fired at a nearby zombie.
Bang bang bang!
The gunshots rang out in quick succession, hitting different parts of its body.
The head was like steel, completely impervious; the neck and torso were punched through, but it did nothing to hinder the creature’s movement.
“Normal means can’t kill these things at all. Captain, get back!”
Bai Nian shouted.
Zhang Kun didn’t hesitate, scrambling back up the wall.
The sharp sound of a safety pin being pulled rang out as Bai Nian hurled a Hand Grenade outside.
By now, five or six Mutant Zombies had already breached the first defensive line.
With strength at the very limit of human capability, Bai Nian flung the grenade into the horde, landing it precisely at their feet.
But something unexpected happened.
The Mutant Zombies recognized the grenade—and kicked it away!
“What the—?!”
Zhang Kun was stunned, and Bai Nian quickly pulled both of them down to the ground.
With a deafening blast, flames and smoke exploded outward, shattering every pane of glass on the Tower.
Fear flickered in Bai Nian’s eyes.
She pulled the pin on another grenade, holding it to count the seconds.
This time, the grenade was thrown, detonating mid-air before hitting the ground—giving the zombies no chance to kick it away.
Instantly, a surge of flames swallowed them whole.
Even their steel-like bones were reduced to ash in an instant.
“Only grenades can kill them?”
Shi Gao’s voice trembled.
The two of them didn’t have many grenades left—only what they’d brought from the School.
Looking out over the perimeter, even more Mutant Zombies were gathering, their numbers swelling.
“Let’s use stealth and get out of here!”
Bai Nian decided without hesitation.
Zhang Kun hesitated, “But the others…”
“Captain, they’re just a bunch of NPCs!” Bai Nian insisted, adding, “The third line of defense should hold them until dawn.”
Zhang Kun nodded, showing he understood.
“Then where do we go? Another Survivor Enclave?”
“These Mutant Zombies can’t be this smart. Someone must be controlling them from behind the scenes,” she said, voicing her suspicion.
Otherwise, they wouldn’t be able to coordinate an assault on a single enclave like this.
Nor would these Survivors have lasted so long.
For some reason, the image of the girl she had seen in the daylight suddenly surfaced in her mind.
“No, I know a place we can go.”
