“Feini…”
Fat Nini’s answer was seamless, leaving Qingshamu unable to find any flaws.
This guy Rui Tiantian is wearing a mask, but does she really think I, Feini, can’t sense that aura of misfortune clinging to her?
I’ve already figured out her personality long ago, and I know exactly what’s been weighing on her mind.
It’s nothing but the usual three things: Human Race, Demonkind, Order and Evil Opposition.
So clichéd, I don’t even feel like mentioning it.
“Come here, let me talk to you.” Feini beckoned, dragging the always-cool-and-mysterious Qingshamu over.
“What is it?” Qingshamu obediently came over and knelt on the bed.
“Do you really think your undercover mission or our infiltration could change the fate of the Human Race and Demonkind?”
Feini spread out the map of the Chaos Mountains and Kingdom of Huanxu on the bed, picked up a brush, and began pointing at various places.
“What are you trying to say?” Qingshamu asked seriously.
“What I’m saying is, your understanding of this world is flawed. In your eyes, there’s only the Human Race and Demonkind, but to us Demonic Beasts, the Demonkind are split into hundreds of different factions, all mutually hostile.”
“The Demonkind factions that are actually in direct conflict with your United Kingdom are just a tiny fraction. No one really knows the boundaries of the Demon Domain, and our Demonic Beast territory is far bigger than your entire country.”
Feini said in a low voice.
“…I already know all that.” Qingshamu crossed her arms, a little annoyed. “Just because I grew up in the countryside doesn’t mean I’m illiterate.”
“We can’t represent all of Demonkind, just as your United Kingdom can’t represent the entire Human Race. Yet here you are, worrying about the fate of all humanity every day—do you even have the qualifications for that? Aren’t you tired?” Feini shot back.
“The Nameless Witch and God and Demon Academy are cultivating intelligent Demonic Beasts to infiltrate the United Kingdom. If their plan succeeds, it’ll be a disaster. As a hero, I can’t just sit by and do nothing.” Qingshamu replied.
“And do you really think those humanoid Demonic Beasts can infiltrate the United Kingdom?” Feini asked.
“If you’re involved, they just might.” Qingshamu said.
And just like that, the conversation circled back. The point was, Feini as a humanoid magic sword was just too clever, far smarter than any Demonic Beast she’d ever met.
“Then let me be clear—The Nameless Witch and God and Demon Academy’s ultimate goal isn’t as simple as you think. The Nameless Witch’s target isn’t the Human Race; in fact, she’d never attack the Human Race, but would protect you all instead. After all, you’re her most important observation subjects.”
Feini explained with a smile.
“You know the Nameless Witch?” Qingshamu exclaimed.
“You’ve been tailing us, haven’t you? You know we live with the Faceless Witch, so of course you’re aware of some inside information.” Feini bluffed.
“You’re a Magician—you should know how magicians think. The Nameless Witch is someone who’s taken magic to the peak. Do you really think standing at the pinnacle would suddenly make her want to do something for the Demonkind?”
“…” Qingshamu was speechless for a moment.
Although she wasn’t a pure Magician, she knew the temperament of magicians all too well.
Take White Feather Dove for example, the classic case of a Magician: the longer they live, the more extremely rational they become, losing empathy and becoming perfect egotists, caring only about acquiring magical knowledge and improving their own magic. Everything else is expendable.
That’s why veteran magicians aren’t tempted by fame or fortune.
Even if their own country is on the verge of destruction, as long as their Magic Workshop isn’t set on fire, they couldn’t care less.
Among the Human Race, there are plenty of Hidden Mage Families who keep only the most basic connections with the United Kingdom and will never lend a hand easily.
“Maybe Demonkind’s magicians have a different personality.” Qingshamu still tried to defend her point.
“Anyway, I’ve said what I wanted to say. I don’t care about Demonkind, and I don’t care about you humans. Even if a god descended, I’d only care about my family. If you still don’t trust us, I’ve got nothing more to say. Just stab my daughter and me with your sword—we won’t resist. Good night.”
Feini slowly got up and climbed into bed.
“I’ll fight back.” White Feather Dove said coldly.
“Good night.” Qingshamu sat for a while, got up to turn off the magic lamp, then returned to the small sofa to meditate.
Tonight, the moonlight magic on her body was obviously much more stable than before.
It wasn’t shining as wildly bright as before, which meant her state of mind was now much calmer.
It looked like Feini’s words had managed to temporarily convince the village hero.
———
The next morning, the Seven People Group of Lost Beast gathered together and set out once more.
Life in the Kingdom of Huanxu was far more colorful than at God and Demon Academy.
After all, God and Demon Academy was just a copy of an academy city; its internal facilities couldn’t compare to those of the Human Race at all.
There were still too few Demonic Beast apprentices—at most, just a few thousand, and that was only because the witches scoured the entire Demon Domain to find that many.
Demonic Beasts aren’t really fond of banding together.
Just look at how the Faceless Witch only needed to find a few advanced apprentices to level up, and you can see how precious a Demonic Beast apprentice capable of transforming into a human truly is.
And look at the streets of the Kingdom of Huanxu—just a single street has thousands of people, filled with the scent of humanity.
The more people, the more interesting things become, not to mention how organized all the Adventurers are.
“Elder sister, look, there’s another fight breaking out.” Yeqi pointed with her hand.
“Fight! Fight! Fight!” Lianjian cheered, wishing for chaos in the world.
Everyone was having breakfast at a street stall, while right beside them, a mass brawl among Adventurers was taking place as a show.
The onlookers all scattered far away, afraid of getting caught up in the trouble, but the Seven People Group of Lost Beast remained calm and unmoved, not retreating a single step.
The Adventurers fought and brawled, but none dared touch their table, always making sure to avoid them even during the chaos.
After breakfast, the Lost Beast team headed straight out of the city.
The Kingdom Knights guarding the city gates all recognized them, so getting out was easy.
They often ventured deep into the mountains, encountering all kinds of strange, bloodthirsty Demonic Beasts.
But their strength was all rather pitiful—nothing but scraps in the face of the Demonic Beast girls.
In fact, battles were the least of their worries, as fights usually ended in an instant.
If Big White walked even a little too slowly, she’d miss her chance to claim the kill, so she had to compete with the Golden Fang Beast Sisters for headcount—otherwise, there wouldn’t be any opportunities to test her sword.
As for the other four teammates, their daily routine was to line up at the rear and squirm along like four maggots, still bantering and performing their rustic love dramas.
If nothing unexpected happened, those four maggots could probably stretch their drama into fifty episodes of a city romance series.
The team’s biggest enemy wasn’t monsters, but always getting lost—sometimes they even had to take long detours.
There was no helping it; everyone had to camp out in the wild. Luckily, they had plenty of camping experience.
But once lying in the tent, they’d recall those soft, clean beds at the inn, the slightly noisy environment outside the window, and falling asleep in comfort or meditating.
Once someone’s tasted happiness, their threshold for hardship rises, and suffering just doesn’t come as easily anymore.
