“The wind feels nice tonight. How about you, Miss Lin?”
Yun Ziyu, walking slowly along the beach with Lin Wanfeng, tried to ease the awkward atmosphere by starting a conversation.
Hearing Yun Ziyu’s words, Lin Wanfeng still didn’t turn around. Her gaze remained hotly fixed on Ling Cheng ahead.
“Yeah. It would be even better if he were holding my hand while we walked.”
Ling Cheng and An Xin led the way. An Xin’s long hair was blown wildly by the wind, and Ling Cheng naturally reached out to tuck the stray strands behind her ear. They walked with their heads together, whispering to each other, their silhouettes stretched long and thin under the moonlight.
“Oh, that…” Lin Wanfeng’s completely unabashed words left Yun Ziyu at a loss for how to respond.
“Haha, your reaction is adorable. I like Ling Cheng.”
“But President Ling already has a girlfriend…”
Hearing this, Lin Wanfeng finally slowly withdrew her gaze from the two people ahead. She turned her head and studied the flustered Yun Ziyu with amusement.
“So what if he has a girlfriend?”
Lin Wanfeng’s tone was casual and free, as if she were stating something perfectly ordinary. “That won’t change how I feel about him. Before I met Ling Cheng, I never even thought about getting married.”
“Then… what’s your relationship with President Lin?” Yun Ziyu couldn’t hold back her curiosity and asked.
She wanted to understand if Lin Wanfeng was really Ling Cheng’s ex-girlfriend.
“Haha, he was my hired fake boyfriend. Too bad the mission’s over now…” Lin Wanfeng laughed softly, gazing at the bright moon over the sea.
Though her tone was light, a hint of sadness flickered in her eyes.
“F-fake boyfriend?”
“Because I didn’t want to get married at first, but my parents kept pressuring me, so I found a fake boyfriend to fend them off.” Lin Wanfeng wasn’t one to hide things, so she spoke openly.
“I didn’t have high hopes for the fake boyfriend thing at the start, but Ling Cheng worked really, really hard—did a ton of things for me.” She reached a hand toward the night sky, as if trying to grasp the moon above the sea.
“That’s true. President Ling always puts in relentless effort for others—super, super hardworking and gentle.” Hearing Lin Wanfeng’s description, Yun Ziyu thought of the Ling Cheng she knew.
Gentle and hardworking, striving for their shared dreams even now. That was why she liked him so much.
“Haha, looks like you’re one of my shared interests.” Lin Wanfeng sized up Yun Ziyu playfully.
“Shared interest? Miss Lin, what are you talking about?”
“Still playing dumb? Don’t you like Ling Cheng?” Lin Wanfeng casually pinched Yun Ziyu’s soft cheek.
“Ah! Miss Lin, what are you doing?” Caught off guard by such a direct and swift attack, Yun Ziyu lost her ability to form coherent sentences. “President Ling? I…”
She couldn’t say “I like him” as naturally as Lin Wanfeng had, but she also couldn’t lie and say she didn’t.
“Alright, I won’t bully such a cute girl anymore. So anyway, liking someone and whether they have a girlfriend or not—those two things don’t conflict!”
Seeing that Ling Cheng and An Xin were almost out of sight, Lin Wanfeng quickly grabbed Yun Ziyu and hurried after them.
“And besides, if you don’t express your feelings properly now, you’ll regret it when you really miss your chance. How can you be sure that the ending with the person you like wouldn’t be the best possible one?”
As she spoke, Lin Wanfeng’s eyes sparkled, and for a moment, Yun Ziyu almost felt she was right.
Especially that last line—”How can you be sure that the ending with the person you like wouldn’t be the best possible one?”—struck deep into Yun Ziyu’s heart.
She thought that her feelings for Ling Cheng were no weaker than anyone else’s. If she really ended up with him, she wouldn’t just be a good wife—she’d also stand by him in their careers.
Watching Yun Ziyu sink into thought, a faint smile appeared on Lin Wanfeng’s lips. She knew she had gotten through to her.
Now she could move on to the next step of the conversation therapy formula.
“Besides, Miss An Xin is dangerous. If Ling Cheng stays with her, he won’t be happy.” Lin Wanfeng pinched Yun Ziyu’s cheek again and looked her in the eye seriously.
“Dangerous? You must be joking.” Yun Ziyu waved her hand with a laugh, assuming Lin Wanfeng was just saying that out of jealousy.
“At the company, you’ve been in Ling Cheng’s office plenty of times, right?” Lin Wanfeng pulled out her phone photo album and showed it to Yun Ziyu.
“There’s a micro-camera behind Ling Cheng’s desk, spying on his every move. It wasn’t planted by a competitor or an enemy.”
Looking at the camera and recalling Lin Wanfeng’s earlier words, Yun Ziyu felt cold sweat break out. “No way… maybe it’s…”
“Then scroll down in the photo album. The later pictures show who our tech team identified as the mastermind. It’s Ling Cheng’s girlfriend, An Xin.”
As Yun Ziyu continued scrolling, Lin Wanfeng whispered her plan into Yun Ziyu’s ear.
Of course, Lin Wanfeng had been busy for a long time and had gathered more than just this clue.
But there was no need to show everything now. She’d save it for tonight.
Hearing the plan Lin Wanfeng murmured, Yun Ziyu hesitated.
“Is this really okay? Maybe Miss An Xin is just overly sensitive…”
“Can you really feel at ease letting someone you love fall into the hands of that kind of person?”
While Yun Ziyu still wavered, Lin Wanfeng grasped her hand firmly.
“I want to protect Ling Cheng. Can you help me?”
Feeling the warmth from the palm in hers, Yun Ziyu finally made up her mind. She, too, would protect Ling Cheng.
She could never allow the gentle, hardworking Ling Cheng to be stabbed in the back by his closest person.
After An Xin had stooped to installing surveillance on her boyfriend, she had lost any right to truly embrace Ling Cheng.
“Okay!” Yun Ziyu nodded earnestly.
“Then let’s work together, my shared interest~” Lin Wanfeng held Yun Ziyu’s hand and strolled slowly along the moonlit beach.
“Aren’t we love rivals?” Yun Ziyu asked, puzzled. This was the first time she’d heard someone call liking the same person a “shared interest.”
Usually, that phrase was only used for liking something, right?
“Because I think Ling Cheng is wonderful—worth being liked by many girls. So we’re shared interests.” Lin Wanfeng said all this with a completely serious face.
“What kind of logic is that? When you like someone, shouldn’t you want them to be liked only by you?” Yun Ziyu bit her lip softly. In her mind, if no one else liked Ling Cheng, that would be ideal.
Because deep down, she still felt she wasn’t attractive enough, so she twistedly thought that if only she alone could see his good qualities.
But Lin Wanfeng was different. She believed that no matter what, Ling Cheng would end up with her in the end.
