I’m the City Lord!? Is this for real or just a joke?
But in the next second, Mu Xuan immediately dodged to the side. Then, a massive stone hand came crashing down on the spot where Mu Xuan had just been.
That stone hand was covered with cracks, looking like it could fall apart at any moment. At the wrist, several Chains were attached.
Those Statues didn’t attack me, but this hand is coming for me—what’s going on!?
At this moment, the Statues reacted too, hurriedly shouting, “Protect the City Lord!”
They rushed to Mu Xuan’s side, facing outward with vigilance, forming a tight circle around him.
Seeing the Statues surrounding him for protection, Mu Xuan couldn’t help but twitch at the corners of his mouth. Are they really protecting me and not just blocking me from dodging an attack?
If that hand strikes again, Mu Xuan was certain he’d take the blow straight on thanks to these Statues. He didn’t know if the Statues would be fine, but he’d definitely be seriously injured.
When that hand struck, Mu Xuan could feel its immense power. The cracks in the ground it left behind proved it—a blow like that could be fatal.
These Statues must’ve mistaken him for the City Lord because of the Fragment in his hand.
“What is this?” Mu Xuan simply asked.
But the Statues acted as if they hadn’t heard him, giving no response whatsoever.
Mu Xuan finally understood. They couldn’t comprehend his words; they just reacted to what was happening in front of them, like machines with programmed instructions.
Forming this protective circle must be one of their orders.
Damn, what good are these Statues then!!!
“Move aside, go deal with that Severed Head.”
As expected, there was still no reaction, and in the distance, the stone hand was already rising again.
This made Mu Xuan’s forehead throb.
Annoyed yet without hesitation, Mu Xuan tried to slip through the gaps between the Statues encircling him.
That hand was lifting—every second of delay made escape less likely!
He definitely didn’t want to be crushed!
But Mu Xuan realized the Statues had no intention of letting him out, as if believing he’d be safe as long as he stayed within their circle.
Damn it!!! If you’re going to die, don’t drag me down with you!
Looking at these “loyal” Statues guarding the so-called “City Lord,” Mu Xuan was almost in tears.
Just as Mu Xuan was growing anxious, the hand had already risen overhead, preparing to smash down once more.
At that moment, the Statues finally reacted.
“Alert!”
With a clack, all the Statues suddenly grew several heads taller, and the encirclement loosened a bit.
Seizing the opportunity, Mu Xuan darted out just as the hand came crashing down.
“Boom——” A deafening sound echoed, accompanied by billowing smoke.
Having dodged the hand, Mu Xuan finally breathed a sigh of relief. In the distance, the Severed Head let out another anguished roar. The Chains behind it clanged loudly.
What’s going on?
The Severed Head hadn’t been this agitated just a moment ago.
As the smoke cleared, Mu Xuan quickly understood why.
The massive stone hand had been smashed to rubble by the Statues.
What the heck is this!?
Mu Xuan had assumed these ugly and useless-looking Statues would be pulverized by the hand, and the smoke was just their dust. Who would’ve thought—they actually destroyed the hand instead!
Still reeling from shock, Mu Xuan heard the Severed Head’s roar grow even more piercing. The ground split apart beneath it, and countless Chains shot out from the cracks, wrapping around the struggling head once more.
With the Chains restraining it, the Severed Head’s struggles gradually subsided. As it was dragged into the darkness, it suddenly looked up, its eyeballs nearly bulging out of their sockets as it glared chillingly at Mu Xuan.
A hair-raising voice drifted over.
“The next one… will be you…”
On the ground where the Severed Head was dragged away, a deep groove remained—a long trail stretching all the way into the darkness.
So… that’s it? I didn’t even have to do anything!?
But the problem was, the exit still hadn’t appeared. The red phosphorescent objects on the walls quickly turned black, as if infected by something.
Clutching the Fragment tightly, Mu Xuan noticed the Statues once again surrounding him. He immediately found a gap and slipped out. The Severed Head was gone; the Statues should logically determine he was no longer in danger.
But since they kept closing in, Mu Xuan had a bad feeling.
Suddenly, the Statues moved much faster. Mu Xuan had just dodged one when three more blocked his way.
He tried another direction, intending to keep running circles around them. But the Statues suddenly stopped moving altogether.
“What’s with you all?” Cautiously, he poked the nearest Statue. Realizing it really wasn’t moving, Mu Xuan grew even more confused.
But soon, Mu Xuan was struck by a sudden realization—all the phosphorescent objects had now turned pitch black, plunging the area into complete darkness.
He quickly drew upon a bit of the power of Light to illuminate the area. When he saw what was in front of him, his pupils shrank in shock.
Two black spikes had somehow pierced through all the Statues before him, completely silently.
A chill ran down his spine; his heart screamed warning after warning.
In a daze, Mu Xuan realized heavy shackles had been clamped onto him. On either side, a Shadow pressed against him, escorting him relentlessly forward.
It was so dark. The power of Light he’d summoned had somehow gone out, unable to light his surroundings. But in the distance, there was still a faint glow.
There stood a Guillotine!
Footsteps squished against the ground, accompanied by the soft sound of water. It was the fresh red blood trickling down from the Guillotine.
Most importantly, this Guillotine had a slanted blade.
Are they trying to make me cosplay Louis XVI!?
Mu Xuan struggled frantically, but the shackles weren’t so easy to break free from, and the two Shadows beside him held him tightly, forcing him onward toward the Guillotine.
As he drew nearer, more Shadows appeared in the faint light. A torrent of angry roars, shrieks, and sobs erupted in Mu Xuan’s ears all at once.
“You’ve killed so many people, now it’s your turn to know what it’s like to be killed!”
“Die!!!”
“My two children… you killed them both!”
“……”
Hearing these voices clamoring for his death, Mu Xuan’s spirit grew a bit dazed, but his expression remained unchanged.
He hadn’t done any of these things. He must have been mistaken for Chatute…
Who would’ve thought… Chatute ended up like Louis XVI, sent to the Guillotine.
Thinking of that enormous Severed Head from before… could that have been Chatute’s head? And those Statues, the people who supported him?
But he absolutely didn’t want to end up like Chatute and reenact the fate of Louis XVI!!!
