Chapter 43: A Simple Task

The two people merely exchanged a glance with Bai Nian, then instantly collapsed to the ground in a deep sleep.

Resolving zombies might be difficult, but dealing with two ordinary people is a piece of cake.

Bai Nian muttered to herself.

She hadn’t expected these Survivors to have Firearms.

Just as she was about to bend down and pick them up, the System’s voice suddenly rang out.

“Knowledge is Power!”

“Today’s Daily Random Task: Establish Friendly Relations with Survivor Base”

“Reward: Gun Mastery”

“Punishment: Loss of Joy”

Her hand suddenly froze in midair, stopping short of reaching for the Firearm.

Instead, she turned and walked toward the interior of the Base.

Gun Mastery would be of great help to Bai Nian inside these doors, but as for the punishment, she instinctively avoided it.

The dim corridor was filled with an unpleasant, dusty odor.

Most of the rooms on the second floor stood wide open, their insides a mess and completely deserted.

It wasn’t until Bai Nian reached the end of the corridor that she discovered a circular walkway.

On the side of the building opposite the stairs, there was an Elevator still in operation.

It was tightly cordoned off by a wire mesh fence.

Inside the iron gate, a Survivor stood guard, holding a Firearm.

When he saw Bai Nian, he looked momentarily surprised.

Just as he was about to question her, he suddenly felt his head go heavy and drowsy, his eyelids growing unbearably heavy.

As if compelled by some strange force, he unlocked the iron gate.

Bai Nian whispered a few words in his ear, and the two of them entered the Elevator together.

This building had eighteen floors in total.

Many of the floor buttons in the Elevator had been marked with a big red X by a marker.

Bai Nian was about to ask about it when she noticed a Camera in the Elevator, its red light glowing ominously.

To avoid arousing suspicion, she kept silent.

With a ding, the Elevator doors opened.

The two of them arrived at the tenth floor.

Here, things were completely different from the second floor.

The moment the Elevator doors opened, Bai Nian saw a great number of Survivors.

Some were walking slowly through the corridors with canes, others hurried past with documents in hand.

Every room’s door was wide open, and inside people were bent over their work—as if everyone here had their own tasks to keep them busy.

Bai Nian’s arrival immediately attracted their attention.

It wasn’t just her appearance; her clothes and gear were far too clean—entirely different from these Survivors in their tattered rags.

Let alone the fact that she was a stranger with such obvious distinguishing features.

The man led Bai Nian to the only tightly closed room in the corner.

After he knocked, a slightly hoarse man’s voice came from inside.

“Come in.”

At these words, the man gripped the handle and pushed the door open.

Bai Nian finally saw the other party—the Leader of this Survivor Base.

Curly hair, thick lips, dark skin, but a pair of particularly bright and lively eyes.

From the moment she entered, he kept sizing up Bai Nian.

“Boss, this is the one sent from outside to investigate H City. She’s been checked—no problems.”

The man beside her explained proactively.

“Your hair and eyes tell me you aren’t an ordinary person.”

The other man ignored his subordinate’s words and instead fixed his gaze on Bai Nian, questioning her.

“Born this way,” she answered calmly.

“Why would outsiders send such a frail-looking woman to investigate here?” he pressed further.

Bai Nian instantly caught the key point—the man showed no sign of joy at her presence.

This meant that she wasn’t the first person from outside to be sent into H City for investigation.

“Mister, perhaps you’re being a bit too quick to judge by appearances?”

She hadn’t finished speaking when the Leader suddenly struck out, launching a Right Hook straight at her.

In that instant, their eyes met.

The hypnosis had failed!

Bai Nian was surprised, but she didn’t react slowly.

The Leader’s attack was full of openings in her eyes—clearly, he didn’t know any Combat Technique.

She quickly ducked and swept at his lower body, dissolving his attack and instantly knocking the Leader to the ground.

The man beside her was caught off guard by the sudden scuffle.

He immediately drew his Handgun and backed away.

“Stop!” the Leader ordered, standing up a little disheveled.

“We survive here, and Parkour has become our daily routine. I thought my lower body strength was enough, but I still got knocked down in one hit. You’re strong.”

As he spoke, he extended his hand and introduced himself, “My name is Ah Hei. Everyone calls me Xiao Hei.”

“I have a cleanliness obsession,” Bai Nian said flatly, refusing the handshake.

The other party didn’t seem embarrassed.

Instead, he gestured for her to sit and dismissed his subordinate.

The two of them had a brief conversation, and Bai Nian learned some of the basics about H City.

The cause of the outbreak was unknown—it had been a sudden catastrophe.

This Zombie Virus could not be cured, only suppressed.

Once infected, people could only survive with the help of Inhibitor.

And Xiao Hei was one of the infected.

That was also why Bai Nian had been unable to hypnotize him, but Xiao Hei wasn’t a lifeless thing; she suspected it was related to the Virus inside him.

Bai Nian’s current task wasn’t to rush her investigation, but to prioritize finding her teammates.

If they were surrounded by a Zombie horde, the three with Zhang Kun would have no hope of survival.

“There are three other teammates who landed with me. Do you have any way to find them?”

Bai Nian asked.

Xiao Hei pondered, “These low-level Zombies rely on hearing. Escaping from them isn’t hard. For the sake of everyone else, I can’t risk sending out a signal.”

But then he changed his tune, “At night, I could light a bonfire on the rooftop. If they see the flames, they should come—but…”

“But what?”

Bai Nian pressed, seeing a hint of gravity in his eyes.

“H City’s nights are extremely dangerous. Mutant Zombies appear; they don’t fear Firearms, have no weak points, and even searchlights can only restrain them a little. I’m afraid your teammates…”

Anyone wandering outside at night would likely face certain death.

Bai Nian understood Xiao Hei’s meaning, but they only had three days; she couldn’t afford to waste the first day.

If she couldn’t find her teammates for now, she’d have to act alone.

“Who supplies the Inhibitor here?” she continued to ask.

“It’s controlled by a school on H City’s east side, another Survivor gathering place. Before the outbreak, those people were a notorious Gang, and now they hold all the Inhibitor tightly in their hands,” Xiao Hei explained.

Bai Nian was taken aback.

This made the mission much simpler—Doctor was most likely in their hands.

“This time, I’ve been sent to rescue all of you. I need to talk with them,” she explained.

Doctor and the fact that this city would be destroyed in three days—these were things the Survivors couldn’t know just yet.

Xiao Hei understood and got up, taking a Map and a Handgun from the drawer and handing them to Bai Nian.

She nodded solemnly, “Thank you.”
