Watching their retreating figures, Irena let out a helpless sigh.
In her heart, she was worried about Vivi, wondering if Wu Menghan had figured something out. Judging by her attitude toward Vivi today, something was definitely wrong.
Wu Menghan’s mental state was already poor; if she knew the truth now, she would likely become even more extreme.
After praying for Vivi for a moment, Irena pulled herself back together. The pursuit of Eno was not over yet, and this was a relatively good opportunity.
If she failed this time, catching Eno in the future would be very difficult. Irena calculated her plans as she kept walking.
Perhaps after this incident, she could find more people to help her. Although the Mana in this world was scarce, there was no lack of talented individuals.
Otherwise, she wouldn’t have encountered two monsters with such heaven-defying talent as Wu Menghan and Vivi.
As the group reached the asphalt road at the foot of the mountain, several beams of light suddenly illuminated the distance.
The intense glare made it hard for the two of them to keep their eyes open, and the destination of those lights was clearly their location. Before they could even speak to inquire, a coarse male voice drifted from afar.
“Stop! Prepare for inspection!”
Wu Menghan stopped in her tracks. Seeing the police car behind the figures, she immediately felt relieved. Vivi, on the other hand, shrank uncomfortably behind Wu Menghan.
She tried to remove the rope from around her neck, but Wu Menghan glared her back into submission. Submissively withdrawing her hand, Vivi leaned closer to Xiaxiaoling’s side, as if doing so would allow her to feel a sliver of warmth.
Wu Menghan ignored Vivi and naturally tied the rope around her own waist, waiting for the officers to conduct their check.
When the police saw the state of the group, their brows furrowed, and they directed a hint of hostility toward Wu Menghan. After all, she was still tethering Vivi; no matter how one looked at it, she didn’t look like a good person.
“Release her and put your hands up!”
Several batons were pointed at Wu Menghan. She was somewhat reluctant, but she still slowly raised her hands. Seeing her cooperative attitude, the officers relaxed slightly and then questioned her.
“Why is she tied up? What happened up there?”
Wu Menghan thought for a moment and gave a general account of what had happened on the mountain. These officers had executed several missions like this before, so they didn’t find the situation Wu Menghan described to be strange.
Once they realized she was one of the people who had called the police, the hostility on their faces vanished completely.
They simply cast a peculiar look at the little one shrinking behind Wu Menghan, commented that young people these days certainly knew how to have “fun,” and stopped pressing for more information.
“Miss Wu Menghan, we have a general understanding of the situation here. In that case, we will first take Miss Xia for a check-up. Do you need any more help?”
“Um… I don’t know how to drive. Could you…”
The officers turned their gazes to Xiaxiaoling’s car parked nearby and immediately smiled. “Don’t you worry. Just give us a location, and we’ll have it delivered for you.”
“Then… thank you.”
“The physical exam report is out. There are no major issues.”
The doctor in charge of the examination walked out holding a report. Seeing that all the data was normal, Wu Menghan and Vivi both breathed a collective sigh of relief.
But since the exam showed she was normal, why were there still no signs of Xiaxiaoling waking up? When Wu Menghan voiced her concerns, the doctor couldn’t explain much, only suggesting that she was too exhausted and simply needed rest.
The two shared a look but did not delve further into the matter. Standing before the hospital’s main entrance, the cold night wind brushed against their faces.
Vivi uncomfortably tugged at the rope around her neck and said pitifully, “Sister Wu Menghan, can you untie the rope on my neck?”
“No, I can’t.”
Wu Menghan shook her head with a smile. She looked very kind, yet there was an indescribable sense of discordance. Vivi pouted and shrank behind her.
Wu Menghan didn’t bother with her, only tightening the rope in her hand. Feeling the pull, Vivi was forced to stand by her side, looking at Wu Menghan with some anger.
“Sister Wu Menghan, what do you even mean by this!”
“It’s best if Vivi doesn’t leave my sight, okay?”
The tone sounded like a suggestion, but it gave Vivi no chance to refuse. Just then, a taxi stopped at the hospital entrance to drop off some passengers. Seeing this, Wu Menghan led Vivi and Xiaxiaoling forward and spoke softly.
“Driver, are you going to Binhu Road?”
Li Si glanced at the time and then at the girl standing outside, and his heart suddenly tightened.
“Are we going, uncle?”
“Yes, yes, get in and we’ll go.”
The taxi sped away and soon stopped at the gate of Xiaxiaoling’s home. Wu Menghan led the group out of the car and headed straight for the residential area’s entrance.
Li Si wiped the cold sweat from his forehead and secretly resolved never to work the night shift again. In the middle of the night, he had almost been scared to death. What kind of person carries an unconscious patient while leading a loli on a leash?
“Hallucinations, ah, they’re all hallucinations. Right, it must be because I’ve been driving the night shift for too long. Yes, that must be it.” Li Si muttered to himself, flooring the accelerator and disappearing into the distance.
***
After returning home, Wu Menghan laid Xiaxiaoling flat on the bed. Her body swayed several times, and she felt dazed. Her body had reached its limit, and she didn’t have any strength left.
Staggering into the other bedroom, Wu Menghan tied the rope to the head of the bed, having no intention of untying Vivi.
Vivi felt a bit awkward. Just as she was about to untie the rope herself, she saw Wu Menghan take another length of rope out of the cabinet.
“Sis… Sister Wu Menghan, what are you doing?”
“Nothing, just a small precaution.”
Wu Menghan’s voice was low; her body was already very weak. In this state, she actually had no way to control Vivi anymore. Vivi pursed her lips. Looking at Wu Menghan’s weakened state, she took a proactive step forward and took the rope.
“Sister Wu Menghan… here, go ahead.”
The expression on Wu Menghan’s face froze. She looked at Vivi in disbelief, her mind seemingly crashing. Seeing that she hadn’t reacted for a long time, Vivi peeked up at her. A smile actually curled at the corner of Vivi’s mouth, one that even she didn’t notice.
“What’s wrong, Sister?”
“Oh, no… nothing. Let’s… rest.”
Wu Menghan did not tie Vivi up. Instead, she tossed the rope aside and even untied the rope around Vivi’s neck. Now it was Vivi’s turn to be stunned.
Before she could ask anything, she saw Wu Menghan lunging toward her. A body several times larger than her own pressed straight down on her. The oncoming pressure forced Vivi to keep retreating, but it was already too late.
