“Father… Hah…”
Lin Mo finally realized why his voice felt familiar.
Though nearly ten years had passed, that gloomy, indifferent gaze was still engraved in his heart.
He would never forget it.
“I didn’t expect it to be you. I thought you died long ago.”
Lin Mo let out a cold laugh.
He had no good attitude toward this biological father he hadn’t seen in so long.
“But from the sound of your voice now, it seems you don’t have long to live either. Am I right, old man?”
“Hah…”
The old man on the other end of the line could only let out a bitter chuckle.
Ten years ago, he might have flown into a rage at this insolent son, but now, he no longer had the strength.
“You’re right… Not a single word wrong…”
The voice from the phone already lacked energy, as if he was speaking purely on borrowed time.
“Heaven isn’t a deaf-mute pretending to ignore you. Every mistake you make in life, it will record one by one, then repay you double.”
“If this is the final result, then so be it.”
When the old man said this, he couldn’t help but let out a heavy sigh—sounding both ashamed and helpless.
But Lin Mo didn’t care at all.
He shot back sharply:
“Old bastard, you’re not admitting you were wrong. You’re admitting you’re about to die.”
“The sins you’ve committed would make even the most brutal demon in hell feel ashamed of itself. How do you have the face to act like you’re repenting here?”
Hearing this, the old man slowly closed his eyes.
Not angry at being seen through, nor hysterically defending himself—just unusually calm.
“Only when a person is at the end of their rope can they truly see themselves. You and I both know that.”
“Hah…”
Lin Mo laughed coldly again, his words dripping with disdain.
“Old man, you’ve grown weak.”
“What are you afraid of? Impending death?”
…
The other end of the line fell silent for a while before the voice came again:
“Death is not terrifying. What’s terrifying is being forgotten.”
“In the years you’ve been away from home, how much have you changed, Lin Mo?”
Lin Mo frowned, unsure of what he was trying to achieve by saying this.
“What do you mean?”
“Nothing… I was just thinking—you’re still a member of the Lin family. You shouldn’t keep wandering outside.”
“The Lin family needs you now.”
…
“Needs me?!”
Lin Mo said it as if he had heard some ridiculous joke, anger rising along with the laughter.
“Don’t give me that crap. Don’t you find that ridiculous yourself when you say it? Or has your face evolved beyond imagination?”
Then, another possibility occurred to him.
He barely managed to suppress the raging fury with all his strength, holding back from cursing out loud.
“If you’re still thinking about that ‘Spell Technique,’ I suggest you give up.”
“No matter what, you’ll never get it. Never. I swear.”
With that, Lin Mo slammed the communicator hard against the wall.
The sound of shattering echoed loudly through the empty laboratory.
He struggled back to the control console and sat down, as if all his strength had been drained.
With difficulty, he took off his glasses, set them aside, took a deep breath, and called into his bracelet:
“Su Yu, reply when you get this message… We’re going to have to move.”
…
Just as this message was being sent, Su Yu was still busy dealing with her own troubles.
In the Hero Association lobby, people from all sides surrounded her in a tight crowd.
All kinds of cameras and microphones were thrust at her, the constant flash strobes stinging her eyes.
“Lady Valkyrie, you’ve achieved such astonishing results right after joining, breaking into the top 100 A-class Heroes. How do you feel about that?”
Surrounded by so many people, Su Yu’s social anxiety inevitably flared up again.
Her face couldn’t form an expression, and her body felt locked up, unable to move.
“I… am honored by this.”
The girl spoke hesitantly, her face as stiff as a corpse, showing no emotional fluctuation.
This contrast between nervousness and coldness gave the journalists on site plenty of room for imagination.
“Lady Valkyrie, according to the data, you rarely change your expression whether in battle or interacting with fans. This has generated quite a bit of discussion online. Can you explain why you do that?”
That was a rather sharp question.
Su Yu got so nervous that her breathing even slowed down.
‘How do I say this? Do I say it’s because my social anxiety made my facial muscles go numb? Would anyone believe that?’
Though it was the truth, she thought for a moment and gave a more tactful explanation:
“It’s due to some… physiological factors. I can’t control it… I’m sorry.”
Su Yu lowered her head slightly, thinking this explanation was acceptable.
She’d let the reporters guess the rest.
“Physiological factors?”
The reporters were all elites in their field.
They quickly latched onto the key point and began speculating wildly:
“I see. Lady Valkyrie is a naturally born person with a blank expression—she can’t make faces. But to leave a good impression on the citizens, she still tried her best to squeeze out a smile, even to the point of almost crying from frustration.”
“What a noble heroic spirit.”
One reporter with a particularly active imagination adjusted the hat on his head and immediately showed great respect.
He had already decided that when he returned, he would write a short article about Lady Valkyrie.
He already had the title:
“A Simple Story—A Little Girl Born with a Blank Expression Who Defies Fate’s Mockery and Bravely Faces Her Life.”
He believed that once this story came out, it would become hugely popular, allowing more people to learn about this great hero.
After this bout of speculation, the scene, which had been as noisy as a riot, suddenly fell silent.
Faint sighs could even be heard.
“Lady Valkyrie, please forgive our impertinence. Other than that, I have another rather sensitive question I need you to answer.”
Though Su Yu didn’t know why the crowd had suddenly quieted down, she didn’t overthink it.
She simply nodded lightly at the reporter who had spoken.
“Go ahead.”
“That is, based on my observations, I noticed that in your only two missions, the S-Class Hero Jinshu Fengbao seemed to be present throughout. Some people even claim to have witnessed Mr. Jinshu Fengbao accompanying you during your hero test. I take the liberty of asking—what is the relationship between the two of you…”
This couldn’t be said too bluntly.
If she wasn’t careful with her boundaries, the fire might turn back on the reporter, so it was up to Su Yu to understand the implication.
“Relationship…”
Su Yu thought about how to phrase it.
Since this was a public statement, Lin Mo himself might see it, so she couldn’t be perfunctory.
After a moment of thought, the girl spoke very seriously:
“He’s my best friend… For life. Though we had some conflicts before, they’re no longer important.”
“I don’t think I’ll ever have a friend better than him in the future. Having him is already enough.”
As soon as she said this, a buzz of astonishment arose in the venue.
Some quick-thinking reporters had already written in their notebooks:
“The Secret Between the Pure White Valkyrie and Jinshu Fengbao”
As for Su Yu herself, she didn’t realize anything at all.
She was even relieved that her language skills still had a bit of life left in them…
