“Phew…”
After thinking for a moment, Jiang Yuening shook her head and didn’t dwell on the origin of her power or why she was so special.
Even though she’d guessed the source of the Blazing Flame ability from the man in the suit’s words… what good did that do?
‘Am I unwilling to doubt his motives over something so baseless? Blazing Flame is a good person, and he’s a good person in everyday life too. Even if that makes me a hypocrite, I’m fine with it.’
“I’m full, meow! Dear Contractor, what do we do next?”
“Wait here for someone to clean up the scene.”
“I want to go home and take a bath, meow. Can’t we just go back? … Huh? Not going home right away?” Dice blinked. “We…”
“No.”
Jiang Yuening refused with a stern face.
The Fourteen-faced Polyhedron gleamed brilliantly in the air.
Dice waved its paws in protest, the diamond hanging from its ear… but Jiang Yuening completely ignored it.
She took out her phone, called Director Xu, and explained the situation at the scene.
Then she waited patiently in place, not looking at Dice again.
Meanwhile, in the Eastern New Commercial Zone of City A.
A man in a black robe sat in the gymnasium, watching the empty arena.
Noticing a voice beside him, he patted the chair next to him and spoke to the Purple Dress Girl who had traveled a long way.
“Come, 009, have a seat.”
The Purple Dress Girl sat down beside him, staring straight at him.
“… 013 and 024 are dead. Pandora will probably absorb their remnant souls soon. Don’t you have any reaction?”
003 chuckled and asked back, “What reaction do you want me to have? Grief? Sadness? Or anger?”
“You seem to have no reaction at all,” the Purple Dress Girl said flatly. “You sent them to die one by one. You already knew they would die at the hands of those abnormal Magic Girls.”
“Who said that? I’m not an omniscient god. How could I have known they’d die at the hands of Magic Girls?” the black-robed man retorted.
“According to the strength of Magic Girls in other cities, even the weakest, 093, could easily kill other Magic Girls.”
“But City A is an exception. Otherwise, we wouldn’t have chosen to settle here.”
“Yes, City A is indeed an exception.” The black-robed man nodded. “But the reason City A is an exception is entirely due to other factors, not because the Magic Girls here are especially strong.”
The Purple Dress Girl frowned. “What do you mean?” She didn’t understand what this Respected 003 was babbling about.
The black-robed man simply smiled and explained. “Do you think the Lord of the Night really lost to Pandora back then?”
“I think if Pandora had been at her peak, she might have been able to fight the Lord of the Night.”
“You’re wrong.” 003 shook his head gently. “The Lord of the Night only suffered a minor injury back then. The one who was seriously injured was Pandora…”
“That’s impossible!”
The Purple Dress Girl stood up, staring in disbelief at the calm-faced black-robed man.
If the Lord of the Night hadn’t been heavily wounded, then what had all their efforts over the years been for?!
They had spread Shadow Beasts across every corner of the world on such a grand scale, all to absorb human negative emotions and make the Lord of the Night stronger.
To ensure enough emotions, they had even refrained from slaughtering humans and instead chose to leave a sufficient population.
Otherwise, even that waste 091 would have chosen to use more deaths to affect humans.
And to be safe, they had secretly used money or abilities to influence high-ranking officials everywhere, preventing powerful Magic Girls from emerging and causing trouble for the Lord of the Night.
Things like the Idolization Movement, keeping wages low—all of that was done behind the scenes by 009 and other Shadow Beast companions.
But now, Lord 003 was telling him that all their years of hard work had been in vain, that it was all one-sided?
“Don’t get excited. The news you heard from your other companions—I let you hear it,” 003 said.
“The truth, the interesting parts, even why the Lord of the Night did this—I never told you any of it.”
“Now that the plan has finally reached its final stage, I can tell you what I’m allowed to reveal.”
“Sit down. Listen to me explain slowly.”
003 patted the chair again, nodded to the Purple Dress Girl, and gestured.
The Purple Dress Girl bit her lip and finally sat back down, curious about what 003 had been hiding.
Seeing that she had calmed down, 003 leaned back in his chair and began speaking slowly.
“Why do you think the Lord of the Night sent his subordinates to cause chaos one by one?”
“To get them killed.”
“Wrong. Think again.”
“To cause panic among humans?” the Purple Dress Girl asked doubtfully.
“You’re partly right, but not enough.”
“Fine, I’ll just say it straight.” The black-robed man laughed. “The Lord of the Night did this to make humans feel at ease.”
“At ease?!”
The Purple Dress Girl was completely at a loss. In her impression, the Lord of the Night was a being that grew powerful by relying on human negative emotions.
Why would he want to make people feel at ease instead of afraid?
“Yes, at ease.” 003 nodded.
“In the Lord of the Night’s plan, if the other Numbered Shadow Beasts couldn’t be killed by the Magic Girls, they would cause a huge chaos and then come back to wait for new Magic Girls to appear. But if they died, the plan could proceed smoothly until all Numbered Shadow Beasts died at the hands of Magic Girls.”
“Including both of us.”
The Purple Dress Girl was stunned. If everyone was going to die in the end, what was the point of their existence in this world?
“Don’t be afraid. After the plan succeeds and the Lord of the Night has had his fill of fun, we will be resurrected.”
“Resurrected… the Lord of the Night will awaken us again?”
“Yes. Pandora thinks absorbing those black remnant souls increases her power, but she doesn’t realize she is naturally the instrument prepared by the Lord of the Night,” the black-robed man said calmly.
“When everything is over, Pandora will become the vessel to resurrect you and me, bringing us back from the Underworld.”
“The power to control life and death… The Lord of the Night is that formidable?”
“Of course. Who do you think the Lord of the Night is?” the black-robed man laughed. “If the Lord of the Night wanted to, it could destroy this world at any time.”
“Then why…”
“Why hasn’t it done so? Simple. Because the Lord of the Night finds humans interesting.”
The black-robed man smiled, giving the Purple Dress Girl an answer she had never expected.
