Watching the tentacle monster’s entire body crumble into fragments, Meteor finally felt safe enough to descend from the air to the ground.
She scanned the wreckage she had created and let out a helpless laugh.
If Blazing Flame had been the one to handle this monster, it probably wouldn’t have taken even one minute.
She could have purified it with ease and even left her two classmates’ bodies intact.
There would have been no need to be like her, using every trick up her sleeve just to barely resolve such a troublesome monster, and even forcing Director Xu and the others to spend money hiring people to rebuild the third floor of the dining hall.
‘I really am like a dummy—arrogant and always causing trouble for others.’
Sigh…
After sighing silently deep in her heart, Meteor raised her hand and canceled her transformation.
She then looked at her magic fairy, who lacked any sense of liveliness, and rubbed its head.
“Alpha, do you think I’m really stupid?”
“The contractor’s actions align with human behavioral logic. I do not oppose the contractor’s behavior.”
The magic fairy, which looked like a rabbit but was completely hairless from head to toe, blinked its eyes as it gave its reply.
Hearing Alpha’s response, Lin Yiyi smiled. She continued to stroke Alpha’s head and asked, “Alright, alright. Then can you tell me why I heard the voice inside that Black Star Badge and even received its gift, yet I didn’t turn into a monster craving knowledge like my classmates?”
“The contractor’s body has established a contract with me and was modified by magic power in advance. Naturally, you would not be affected by other magic power.”
“Hmm… then how do you explain this unexpected ability I got, which lets me shift into an alternate dimension and then choose a location to reappear from?”
“This is an ability the contractor originally possessed. After receiving the Knowledge Enlightenment, it was naturally stimulated.”
“An ability I originally possessed? Why do I feel like you’re lying to me?”
Lin Yiyi sat down and stroked Alpha’s body, her mood improving.
Although Alpha wasn’t as smart and lively as Dice—who felt more like a living animal than a stiff fairy—she was satisfied just to have Alpha as a companion.
Then again, she really wanted to pet Dice’s head and see if she could get its fur all over the floor. If she couldn’t do that, Blazing Flame’s magic fairy would be fine too.
She had never even seen what Blazing Flame’s magic fairy looked like, which made her quite curious.
Munch, munch…
“It is not a deception. It is simply that the contractor usually only focuses on combat and has not sufficiently developed her own abilities.”
“Like your companion, Sapphire—she developed her abilities to a certain extent and researched magic that can rapidly compress the magic power within her body.”
“As for her ability to manipulate time, that was something she gained unexpectedly after her Emotion Outburst.”
Alpha stared into Lin Yiyi’s eyes and answered honestly with what was on its mind.
Seeing that her magic fairy wasn’t giving her any face at all, Meteor felt a bit of bashful anger and began to scratch its belly, attempting to influence its judgment.
But Alpha simply looked at Meteor as if she were a fool and gave a heartless critique.
“Dear contractor, I am a magic fairy, not a human. I do not have neural units like yours.”
“Please cease this strange behavior and place me on the ground. I need to enter hibernation.”
Faced with Alpha’s cold demeanor, Lin Yiyi poked both its cheeks as a way to vent her frustration. She then took out her magical outfit and withdrew the fairy back inside.
Just as Lin Yiyi finished all this and planned to go find Blazing Flame to report on the situation, Blazing Flame actually came to her first.
The red-haired girl looked at the debris scattered across the ground, then glanced at the purification fragments dancing in the air in the distance before asking Lin Yiyi, “Are you hurt? That monster looked quite troublesome.”
“Ah… no, I’m perfectly fine now,” Lin Yiyi replied hastily.
Blazing Flame walked to her side and scrutinized her up and down for a good while. Only then did she nod slightly, her mind at ease.
Under Lin Yiyi’s watchful gaze, Blazing Flame took a small note out of her pocket and handed it to her.
“Take this. It’s yours.”
“Mine?” Lin Yiyi was a bit puzzled.
“Yes. When I went to the teaching building to comfort the students and tell them not to panic, a student asked me to give this note to you,” Blazing Flame explained with a calm expression. “Just take it.”
“Oh, I see…”
Lin Yiyi nervously accepted the small note from Blazing Flame’s hand, hesitating over whether she should open it right now to see what was written inside.
She was wondering if she had made the students hate her. Perhaps they felt she hadn’t protected anything at all, which is why they specifically wrote something to scold her.
If only Blazing Flame had read the note beforehand, then she could have learned the contents through her instead.
Should she hand the note back to Blazing Flame and let her check it?
“Ah, there are still other places outside being threatened by those tentacle monsters. We need to set out as soon as possible.”
“I’ll be going ahead, Meteor.”
As if sensing Lin Yiyi’s anxiety, Blazing Flame cleared her throat and explained her reason for leaving before flying toward the nearby school buildings.
Watching Blazing Flame’s retreating back, Lin Yiyi swallowed hard, her heart growing increasingly uneasy.
She knew very well that Blazing Flame was giving her space to be alone, letting her decide for herself whether to open the note.
Gulp… this is so troublesome…
Ugh…
‘I… I guess I still have to open it.’
If they dared to scold her, she would stop trying to remember these students’ names from now on. Even if they tried to strike up a conversation later, she wouldn’t pay them any mind!
‘Hmph! That’s what I’ll do!’
Mustering her courage, Lin Yiyi carefully opened the note and looked at the contents out of the corner of her eye.
If there were any words she disliked, she would immediately throw the note to the ground and burn it with fire.
She read it word by word, fearing that she was hated by the students she knew because she wasn’t as strong as the other magic girls.
“Eh?”
However, after she finished reading everything on the note, Lin Yiyi couldn’t help but let out a startled cry.
The contents were completely different from what she had imagined.
“Thank you for saving me, Meteor. Once I get into a good university and graduate, I’m definitely going to work at the Monster Response Department! Let’s be good friends then!”
The student who wrote the note hadn’t left a name or any contact information. The person had only left this simple sentence, giving her a promise for several years into the future.
Staring at the neat and earnest handwriting—so firm that it left slight indentations on the back of the paper—Lin Yiyi pursed her lips, unsure of what to say.
She couldn’t even remember how many people she had saved over the years.
She had always felt that saving people was an obligation she had to fulfill after becoming a magic girl, and thus, she never craved any reward. After so many years, she had almost grown accustomed to it.
Hearing an occasional “thank you” from the citizens was already a great source of encouragement for her.
Yet now, some dummy had been saved by her and immediately wanted to join the dangerous Monster Response Department, even saying something about being friends.
Really…
“What a fool,” Lin Yiyi whispered, scolding the anonymous student, but she couldn’t help but smile.
Having said that, Lin Yiyi took a deep breath and looked up at the azure sky.
Thinking of Blazing Flame’s current location, she naturally took out her magical outfit and shouted with a voice full of conviction.
“TRANSFORMATION!“
