“Who among you is the patient’s family?”
Cheng Yuexin, though hungry, stood up quickly, her expression turning serious.
“I am. What’s the situation now?”
The nurse sighed in relief but still had a slight frown.
“There’s an emergency I need to inform you about.”
“The patient encountered bleeding during surgery.”
“Her blood type is Rh-negative.”
“The blood bank doesn’t have much stock—enough for about two hours, but the surgery’s completion time is unknown, so…”
The nurse deliberately paused; she didn’t need to finish for them to understand.
Cheng Yuexin was stunned.
She knew Cheng Yueqing’s blood type—the same as their mother’s.
But encountering such a situation during surgery meant life and death were uncertain.
Cheng Yuexin paced anxiously.
“My blood type doesn’t match. Rh-negative is panda blood. What can we do?”
The nurse tried to comfort her, speaking softly.
“We’re also contacting other hospitals, but chances are they won’t have any either.”
“Then what should we do?”
Tears glistened in Cheng Yuexin’s eyes as the worst possibilities raced through her mind.
A warm hand landed on her thin shoulder.
Turning around, Cheng Yuexin saw Liu Yingqiu’s smiling face.
“Don’t worry. I’m also Rh-negative. I can donate blood.”
Her tightly pursed lips loosened slightly, a glimmer of hope appearing in her eyes.
“Really?”
Liu Yingqiu nodded firmly, stepped forward, gently patted Cheng Yuexin’s shoulder twice, then raised her hand to softly touch her cheek.
She didn’t like seeing her sad.
“Don’t worry. I said I’d help you. Little cutie looks better when she smiles.”
Cheng Yuexin was stunned for a moment.
Suppressing the complex emotions inside, she gave Liu Yingqiu a faint smile.
She lightly squeezed Liu Yingqiu’s hand, her eyes filled with intense gratitude.
Even though her hand was slightly cool, Liu Yingqiu held it back, trying to warm it.
“Thank you. I don’t know how to repay you.”
Liu Yingqiu patted the back of her hand and gave a reassuring smile.
“This counts as my atonement. But when I get back, I still want a kiss from you.”
The nurse kept looking between Cheng Yuexin and Liu Yingqiu with a strange expression.
“Huh? What does that mean?”
“Hehe, I’m joking. Also, remember to eat breakfast.”
Liu Yingqiu gave her final instructions, flexed her slender fingers, and slowly let go of Cheng Yuexin’s hand.
Watching Liu Yingqiu and the nurse leave, Cheng Yuexin was full of worry, hoping everything would go smoothly.
She looked down at the breakfast on the seat.
The pain in her stomach had been lingering.
She had endured it for a long time.
“I might as well eat something.”
The bun was cold in her hand, but Cheng Yuexin, having been hungry for so long, didn’t care about the temperature.
In no time, she finished the bun and soy milk.
Only Liu Yingqiu’s portion remained.
“I’ll leave it for her to eat when she gets back.”
Cheng Yuexin waited outside the operating room, her brows furrowed.
Everything today had been so unlucky.
Without Liu Yingqiu’s help, whether Cheng Yueqing would even leave the operating room was uncertain.
It seemed she would owe Liu Yingqiu a huge debt.
Cheng Yuexin’s feelings toward this former best friend were complicated.
Whether she felt hatred or could treat her normally, she wasn’t sure.
But her aversion had lessened a lot.
At least she had saved Cheng Yueqing.
It was like saving her.
Torn inside, Cheng Yuexin lowered her head, twisting her hands together.
What could she use to repay Liu Yingqiu?
She simply hated owing favors.
Fifteen minutes later, without having found an answer, Cheng Yuexin saw Liu Yingqiu return.
“Yingqiu.”
Cheng Yuexin stood up, her face regaining some color.
In contrast, Liu Yingqiu’s face was pale.
Hearing Cheng Yuexin’s voice, she looked up.
“Phew, I’m back.”
Liu Yingqiu exhaled.
Cheng Yuexin could hear the weakness in her voice and stepped forward to support her.
“Thank you. But why is your face like this?”
Looking closer, Liu Yingqiu’s face had lost its color. It felt off.
Helping her sit down, Cheng Yuexin tidied the stray hair at her temples, her face showing a hint of concern.
“Nothing, it’s fine. This always happens after donating blood. To be safe for Cheng Yueqing, I donated a bit more.”
After explaining, Liu Yingqiu picked up the remaining breakfast from the chair and grinned at Cheng Yuexin.
“Looks like you ate well. I’ve been starving. After donating blood, my stomach feels even hungrier.”
Cheng Yuexin gave a playful scold.
“You’re so dumb. I skipped breakfast, but you didn’t have to skip it with me. Now look at you—what if you faint from hunger?”
Liu Yingqiu answered while eating the bun.
“If I faint from hunger, you’ll take care of me. Besides, we’re in the hospital, so I can get treated in time.”
Cheng Yuexin stuck out her tongue, a little cute.
“I don’t want that. If you faint, I’ll just leave you here and let the hospital deal with you.”
Liu Yingqiu gave a wry smile, gazing at Cheng Yuexin, and drank some soy milk slowly.
“You’re so heartless.”
“So what if I’m heartless? When you hurt me, I thought you were very heartless too.”
Liu Yingqiu slowly lowered her raised hand.
The bun in her mouth suddenly tasted bad, cold and hard.
“It was my fault. I know I was wrong.”
Swallowing, Liu Yingqiu spoke seriously.
“I don’t expect you to forgive me, but at least I’ll make up for my mistakes with my actions.”
Cheng Yuexin blinked twice, turned her head away, and said indifferently.
“Whatever you want.”
After thinking, she turned back to meet Liu Yingqiu’s eyes, her expression slightly relaxing.
“Thank you for saving Yueqing, but I don’t want to owe anyone a favor.”
“If you want money, I definitely don’t have any. I haven’t figured out how to repay you either.”
Liu Yingqiu’s eyes lit up.
She quickly grabbed Cheng Yuexin’s hand.
“I just want a kiss.”
Liu Yingqiu didn’t lack money, so naturally she wanted something from Cheng Yuexin that money couldn’t buy.
“Okay.”
Cheng Yuexin agreed readily.
As soon as she finished speaking, she took action immediately.
Before Liu Yingqiu could finish her bun, Cheng Yuexin leaned in.
“You said it—just one kiss.”
Liu Yingqiu nodded, raised her right hand, and curled her pinky.
“Of course. Pinky swear.”
Cheng Yuexin raised her hand, extended her pinky, and hooked it with Liu Yingqiu’s.
“Pinky swear, a hundred years no change.”
The vow had just ended when Liu Yingqiu leaned in without hesitation.
“Mmm… mm…”
It was still that familiar taste, already etched in Liu Yingqiu’s heart.
Cheng Yuexin accepted Liu Yingqiu’s kiss; she had been prepared.
Though they had kissed before and last night, the mood now was completely different.
Liu Yingqiu’s lips were different from the burning temperature of last night—what Cheng Yuexin felt was a slight coolness.
The initial kiss was gentle like the morning breeze, but as it continued, Liu Yingqiu’s greed became more apparent.
Perhaps it was due to donating blood without breakfast.
After three minutes, Liu Yingqiu felt something wrong with her body.
The world spun.
Forced to pull away from Cheng Yuexin’s lips, she slumped heavily against the back of the seat.
“What’s wrong? Are you feeling unwell?”
Cheng Yuexin didn’t understand her condition.
Anxiously, she touched her forehead—normal temperature.
“No, nothing. Maybe it’s because I didn’t eat breakfast before donating blood. Once I finish this…”
Before she could finish, her head swayed freely until it fell onto Cheng Yuexin’s shoulder.
The bun in her hand lost its grip as her consciousness slipped away rapidly.
“Liu Yingqiu! Liu Yingqiu! Yingqiu…”
Hearing Cheng Yuexin’s calls growing distant, Liu Yingqiu gave a helpless smile, as if submerged in seawater, overwhelmed and lost.
‘Am I going to die?’
‘Is this punishment for hurting someone?’
‘Forget it. Yuexin, you should smile more often.’
Cheng Yuexin kept lightly shaking Liu Yingqiu, so anxious that tears squeezed out.
“Yingqiu, don’t scare me. Wake up.”
‘Little idiot, I’ll go on ahead…’
