Dai Feng thought, what she needed to do was to increase the frequency of her appearances in front of Yan Yu. As the saying goes, the best way to attract someone’s attention is to first get close to them, then act indifferent.
Then, in some seemingly casual moment—perhaps a glance back, a brush past—she would naturally catch Yan Yu’s gaze, creating possibilities for further development.
“By the way, Sister Feng,” A Yue suddenly remembered something. She pulled out her phone from her bag and said casually, “Since you ‘like’ our Art Department classes so much, I happen to have the class schedules for each group. Do you want…”
“Yes.”
A Yue hadn’t even finished speaking before Dai Feng cut her off decisively and held out her palm.
“Uh, wait, you’re way too eager, aren’t you?” A Yue responded, then immediately felt something was off.
“What eagerness? This is called learning efficiency first.” Dai Feng’s face was perfectly composed. She tapped her phone screen twice and brought up the payment QR code. “Send me the schedule. I’ll treat you to bubble tea later—full sugar, extra ice.”
A Yue was speechless at her presumptuous attitude. She had no choice but to open her album and send the screenshot.
The photo showed a dense array of course arrangements, but Dai Feng studied it with great interest, her long fingers swiping across the screen, her gaze as focused as if she were reading some business secret.
“Thanks.” Dai Feng put away her phone, patted A Yue on the shoulder in good spirits, and said, “If the teacher says no auditors later, remember to cover for me.”
“I’m not your assistant.” A Yue rolled her eyes.
The two soon reached the teaching building. Quite a few students were already seated in the classroom. Dai Feng followed A Yue to a spot in the back like she knew the place well, her long legs crossed, taking up space by the aisle, looking like she was ready for a long siege.
Class hadn’t started yet, and the professor was already at the podium, droning on about the dull evolution of art movements.
Many students below were half-asleep, some chatting and joking around before class. Dai Feng, however, propped her chin on her hand, listening half-heartedly, but her gaze kept drifting toward the classroom door.
Every time someone pushed the door open, her eyes would subconsciously follow, then quickly dim when she saw who it was, and she would casually look away, staring blankly at her water bottle on the desk.
A Yue watched her and suddenly understood most of what was going on.
This Miss Dai, who usually feared nothing and acted boldly, was now behaving like a little girl waiting for her crush to show up—nervous and full of expectation.
Just as the bell was about to ring, the back door of the classroom was pushed open again.
A somewhat plain black dress, a thin figure, sitting in a wheelchair—the person who came in was none other than Yan Yu.
Dai Feng, who had been idly playing with her watch strap, froze completely the moment she saw that figure.
She almost held her breath, watched Yan Yu take her seat, watched her open a book, watched her tilt her head slightly, revealing the slender line of her neck.
That feeling was strange—like a calm lake surface suddenly disturbed by a thrown pebble, ripples spreading outward until they filled her entire heart.
“Hey, Sister Feng.” A Yue gently nudged her with her elbow.
Dai Feng snapped back to reality, realizing she had been staring too obviously. She quickly cleared her throat in a forced calm and tore her gaze away from the front, fixing it stubbornly on the blackboard as if it held some ultimate truth.
“Hypnotized?” A Yue lowered her voice, a hint of teasing in her tone.
“Nonsense.” Dai Feng denied it flatly. “I just know that girl from before. I was thinking whether I should say hello.”
A Yue held back her laughter and didn’t expose her; she just flipped her textbook pages noisily.
Just then, something neither of them expected happened.
A faint creaking sound came from beside them.
Dai Feng looked up in response and widened her eyes in surprise. The frail girl in the wheelchair whom she had been watching just moments ago was now right in front of her.
“Classmate Dai Feng… good morning.”
Yan Yu showed a somewhat pale smile, then braced herself and sat down in the seat next to Dai Feng.
The moment she saw Yan Yu, Dai Feng’s brain completely short-circuited.
All thoughts of maintaining her persona, keeping a cool expression, or holding onto her pride as Dai Feng were thrown out the window in that instant.
Almost instinctively, she pushed herself slightly to the side to give Yan Yu more space.
“Uh, Yan Yu… what a coincidence.”
“Yes, what a coincidence.” Yan Yu smiled innocently. “I didn’t expect you to come audit this class too. Miss Dai’s love for art really surprises me.”
“Oh, yeah.” Dai Feng’s throat tightened. She had originally wanted to use some high-sounding words to package her love for art, but everything got stuck in her throat. In the end, she could only squeeze out the most plain and simple words. “I just think art is… well, art is really a good thing.”
As if trying to prove her artistic level, she continued, “Art is like that… what’s it called? I remember a great German artist from before, named… Si, Si…”
“Albrecht Dürer,” Yan Yu naturally picked up the name. “The most representative painter and printmaker of the German Renaissance, a master of the Northern Renaissance. He systematically introduced Italy’s perspective, proportion, and human anatomy knowledge into Northern European art.”
“Oh, yeah, yeah, that’s the one I meant!” Dai Feng went along with it, breathing a sigh of relief inside. “Anyway, I really like art.”
“I can see that too.” Yan Yu looked at her seriously, her gaze sincere. “With Miss Dai’s taste in dressing, I think you must have your own insights into art.”
“I’m not that amazing, haha…” Dai Feng felt guilty from the praise, and her ears began to burn.
For some reason, whenever she got close to Yan Yu, she would remember that day in the changing room, the cool sensation of that mint candy melting on her tongue. When Yan Yu had handed her the candy, her heart had inexplicably felt a soft jolt.
That feeling was strange—as if someone had brushed her heartstrings with a feather, making her experience, for the first time in her life, being unable to stop thinking about someone.
Now Yan Yu was right beside her, less than ten centimeters away, close enough that she could reach out and touch her skin.
Dai Feng felt like she could barely breathe. She talked about listening to class, but the corner of her eye uncontrollably stuck to Yan Yu’s profile. The slightly trembling eyelashes, the fair and translucent skin—every detail stirred her heart.
She even couldn’t help thinking: What wire was that woman Su Qinghan tripping on to give up Yan Yu and choose that Jiang Muyun, who was obviously bad news?
If she had known Yan Yu was this kind of girl earlier, back when Su Qinghan was looking for a substitute, she would have rushed over and snatched her away.
In terms of money or influence, she never thought she was that much worse than Su Qinghan.
Unfortunately, there were no ifs.
—
The bell for the break rang, and Dai Feng finally got to move her stiff shoulders. She suddenly remembered that having a chance to sit next to each other was a golden opportunity to build a closer relationship during the break.
Dai Feng had been through her fair share of drinking parties, so she knew a thing or two about social tricks—common ways to start a conversation with a same-sex acquaintance. Usually, it was makeup, skincare, or at worst, celebrity gossip.
So, following the scripts she’d heard before, she put on a natural air and turned to look at Yan Yu. “By the way, ahem, Yan Yu.”
“What is it, Miss Dai?”
“I was going to ask earlier—your skin is so good. What brand of face wash do you usually use? Can you recommend one to me?”
Yan Yu was slightly taken aback, then lowered her head a little shyly, her voice soft. “Well, I can recommend the brand to you, but the brand I use is definitely different from the one Miss Dai uses, right? After all, you’re a young lady from a wealthy family. The one I typically use… might not suit you.”
She tried to be diplomatic, hoping the other party would understand her meaning—at least, in Dai Feng’s eyes, Yan Yu was considerately thinking of her.
How gentle and refined, how beautiful and thoughtful.
Dai Feng sighed inwardly again. Yan Yu really was a good woman.
“Haha, it’s fine. I’m pretty low-maintenance myself. Just tell me what you use, and I’ll use the same. Does being rich mean I’m not allowed to use the same brand as you?” Dai Feng put on a hearty air.
“Is that so? Then I feel relieved.” Yan Yu nodded carefully, then lifted her clear eyes. “But Miss Dai, you said my skin is good just now. That’s just from looking, isn’t it?”
“Oh, yeah? What about it?”
“What I mean is…” Yan Yu tilted her head, a faint, almost imperceptible smile at the corner of her lips. “Dai Feng, if you want to confirm it seriously, it’s not like you can’t personally feel it.”
“Personally feel it?”
Dai Feng didn’t immediately grasp the weight of Yan Yu’s words, but then Yan Yu gently took her hand and directly placed it against her own cheek.
Then, Yan Yu pressed on that hand and gently stroked it across her face.
“Miss Dai, how is the effect of my moisturizer?”
