She suspected she had misheard. What did she mean… if it’s later, the wound will have already healed?
Lin Wei also raised an eyebrow.
The female school doctor seemed completely unaware that there was anything wrong with what she said. She continued in that coaxing tone, almost excited.
“So, for safety’s sake, I recommend a full body checkup immediately!”
Then she turned to Lin Wei, her tone calm.
“This student, please go back to class first. This student needs to rest and be observed. With me here, it’s fine.”
Lin Wei’s gaze lingered on Su Nuannuan’s confused, helpless little face for a few seconds.
She didn’t say anything, just gave a faint “hmm” before turning around and leaving the infirmary decisively, pulling the door shut behind her.
The door locked.
Su Nuannuan stared at the closed door, then glanced at the approaching female doctor, and the atmosphere suddenly felt… a bit strange?
The female doctor reached the door, checked the lock, then turned around and walked step by step toward the hospital bed.
She took off her mask, revealing a young, pretty face—though at this moment, her smile looked a little too radiant?
Her eyes gleamed astonishingly bright, fixated tightly on Su Nuannuan, as if admiring something.
Su Nuannuan felt uncomfortable under her gaze, instinctively shrinking back a little. Her animal-like intuition told her something was off.
“Student~”
The female doctor stretched out the word, sitting beside the bed, leaning forward slightly, so close Su Nuannuan could see the fine fuzz on her face.
“Don’t be scared. You fell and hurt yourself just now, right? Sister will check you carefully~”
Her hand seemed about to reach toward Su Nuannuan.
“Best if we do it under general anesthesia!”
Angel! This student looks exactly like an angel! So soft and sweet! The tiny voice in the female doctor’s heart was screaming wildly.
I have to treat her well! Check her thoroughly with no blind spots!
“Uh… Sister doctor,” was this really necessary? Such a small injury needs general anesthesia?
Su Nuannuan’s voice trembled. “I… I suddenly feel better. It doesn’t hurt at all, really! No need for a checkup! I… I should go back to class!”
“That won’t do!”
The female doctor immediately put on a stern face, but the excitement in her eyes only grew stronger.
“Come on, be good and lie down nicely. Sister will go get some special medicine, guaranteed to cure you!”
She said this, stood up, and walked briskly toward the medicine room inside.
Su Nuannuan watched her back, especially as she seemed to… swallow nervously?
The female doctor came out from the inner room carrying a spray bottle filled with white liquid, humming a little tune. She stopped when she saw the empty examination bed and the open door, frozen in place.
“Huh? Where’s my little angel?!”
Su Nuannuan ran all the way back to the teaching building, only daring to stop and lean on the desk, gasping for breath when she burst into an empty classroom.
“That scared me to death…”
She patted her chest, still trembling. That school doctor’s eyes were too strange. She swore she’d never go to the infirmary again, no way!
From the direction of the playground came faint noises of commotion. Lin Wei should have gone back to class by now, right? Su Nuannuan had no desire at all to face PE class, let alone face Lin Wei, who she had just accidentally tackled.
So she simply lay face down on the desk and played dead, just wanting this day to end quickly.
She dragged herself through the afternoon classes in a daze. As soon as the dismissal bell rang, she rushed out of the classroom.
“Nuannuan, you’re acting weird today. Are you okay?” Zhou Qianqian asked with concern.
“I’m… fine! Just a bit tired!”
Su Nuannuan forced a smile and waved hurriedly goodbye.
“See you tomorrow, Qianqian!” She just wanted to get away from the crowd as fast as possible.
At the school gate, the Su family’s stretched Lincoln hadn’t arrived yet.
Su Nuannuan dawdled and moved a few steps away from Lin Wei, keeping her head down.
Today had been so unlucky.
Lin Wei must think I’m a dumb, troublesome bad luck charm, right? Would she go home and tattle to her parents that I don’t take care of her and only cause trouble? And then…
Then they would think I’m a burden and kick me out…
The more Su Nuannuan thought, the more desperate she became, almost picturing herself clutching a small bundle, shivering pitifully in the cold wind.
The black Lincoln stopped in front of her.
Su Nuannuan quickly opened the rear door and slipped inside, curling up in the corner by the window.
Lin Wei got in after her and sat down beside her.
She could feel Lin Wei’s gaze fall on her again.
Su Nuannuan stiffened all over, even lightening her breath, lowering her head further, wishing she could become invisible.
Lin Wei looked at the timid, pitiful little rice ball curled up beside her, so different from the “villainous female supporting character” image she had imagined before.
What on earth was going on in this girl’s head?
The car smoothly drove into the Su family estate.
At dinner, the long dining table was full of exquisite dishes. Su Nuannuan continued trying to shrink her presence, eating small bites.
“Weiwei,” Mrs. Su gently picked up a dish for Lin Wei.
“How was your first day at the new school? Are you adjusting well? Are the classmates easy to get along with?”
Lin Wei put down her chopsticks, her tone flat but polite. “It’s okay. The teacher’s lectures are clear, and I haven’t really interacted much with classmates.” She filtered out the curious looks automatically.
“That’s good, that’s good.”
Mrs. Su relaxed, then looked at Su Nuannuan, who was still burying her head in her food, her tone filled with some expectation.
“Nuannuan, Mom told you this morning to take good care of your sister. Did you do that today?”
Here it comes! Su Nuannuan was extremely nervous. How should she answer? Lie and say she took good care of her? But Lin Wei was right there! She didn’t dare.
Say she didn’t take care of her? Mom would be disappointed and think she was irresponsible…
Lin Wei sneered silently inside.
Hah, finally the key question. She quietly waited, eager to see how this little rice ball would excuse herself.
Would she play the pitiful card, crying that she tried but her sister ignored her? Or shirk responsibility, saying she couldn’t find her?
Either way, she’d definitely try to shift all the blame for “not taking care well.”
Su Nuannuan took a deep breath, as if making a huge decision. She quickly glanced at Lin Wei, then dropped her eyes and shook her head at Mrs. Su.
Mrs. Su looked a bit awkward, obviously not expecting that reaction, and froze. The dining table fell into an uncomfortable silence.
Lin Wei looked at Su Nuannuan’s expression—clearly feeling wronged yet honestly shaking her head to admit fault—and felt an inexplicable stir.
Lin Wei broke the brief silence at the table.
“It’s nothing serious,” her voice still flat, revealing no emotion. “The child is still young.”
“Oh yes, yes, yes!”
Mrs. Su immediately seized the opportunity, her smile returning as she quickly laughed, “Weiwei’s right! Nuannuan is still young, she’ll learn gradually, right honey?”
She gently nudged Mr. Su’s arm. Mr. Su promptly put down his soup bowl and nodded vigorously.
“Yes, yes, no rush. The sisters just need time to get familiar! Nuannuan is a bit timid now, just needs to learn from her sister more in the future!” He tried hard to lighten the mood.
Su Nuannuan kept her head down, listening to her parents say she was “still young” and “timid,” feeling worse inside.
She knew she was dumb, knew she was cowardly, but having it said aloud in front of Lin Wei… her face burned fiercely.
Su Nuannuan silently protested: You’re the one who’s young… your whole family is young.
