The two of them retreated at the same time.
Shen Yao turned his head, and Cheng Orange hurriedly sat back in her seat.
She felt a bit of regret.
Every time she talked to Shen Yao, she always unconsciously leaned closer to him.
Surely that must make Shen Yao feel awkward, right?
She secretly glanced at Shen Yao.
Would he be uncomfortable?
Cheng Orange let out a cheerful laugh, “You’ve got the hang of it now, right? This game is really simple.”
Shen Yao replied with a hum.
The game was simple, but life was difficult.
Cheng Orange lifted the lid, placed the disc inside, and soon the game screen appeared.
The word “Bapcom” flashed across the screen.
With a few presses, Cheng Orange quickly navigated to the character selection screen.
Looking at the three vertical rows of colorful characters, Shen Yao felt his indecisiveness kick in.
“Which one should I pick?”
Cheng Orange tapped her chin with a finger. “Hmm… what kind of character style do you like?”
Style?
Shen Yao thought seriously for a while. “Something pretty average, I guess.”
“Do you prefer someone lively or more on the gloomy side?”
“They’re about the same to me.”
Shen Yao suddenly realized there might be a double meaning in her question, and couldn’t help but glance at Cheng Orange.
Then he laughed at himself for reading too much into it.
Cheng Orange pointed to the upper right corner. “Then pick that one, Ryu.”
Shen Yao exclaimed, “I know him! He’s from that movie, that… what was it called…”
Cheng Orange and he spoke at the same time, “Super School Overlord!”
Shen Yao smiled knowingly. “That was the first movie we watched together on DVD. So all those characters in the movie are from this game.”
Cheng Orange squinted her eyes with a smile.
“Back then, we secretly turned on the TV in my living room, turned the volume all the way down so my mom and dad wouldn’t find out, shared the same blanket, and just lay on the floor watching. Near the end, I got bored and fell asleep, and you did too. We slept until morning and got caught by my parents. I got scolded so badly, but you didn’t get in trouble at all. So unfair…”
Her voice turned a bit low, “It’s just a shame we can never go back.”
What she meant by “can never go back” had several layers of meaning, not just the growing distance between boys and girls as they got older, but also the subtle changes in her relationship with Shen Yao.
Shen Yao chose Ryu as his character, while Cheng Orange picked a short-haired female character, Makoto.
“Haven’t seen this character before?” Shen Yao wondered.
Cheng Orange said, “I like using this karate fighter. Don’t you think her short hair is kind of like mine?”
Shen Yao glanced at the game character on the screen, then at Cheng Orange, who was smiling brightly.
He shook his head, “Other than both having short hair, not really. You’re way prettier than her.”
It was obvious to the naked eye—Cheng Orange’s neck turned pink, then her earlobes.
She raised her eyebrows and quickly urged Shen Yao, “Alright, press confirm, let’s start the game.”
Just as Shen Yao had said, he almost never played games. “Almost,” because he used to play a little mobile game where a panda eats bamboo, but after entering junior high, he played even less.
So it was no surprise that Ryu, whom he controlled, got thrashed by Cheng Orange’s karate girl.
Shen Yao lost the first round quickly. Cheng Orange didn’t go easy on him at all; her attacks were truly merciless.
Shen Yao was a bit unwilling.
In real life, he rarely lost to anyone.
He didn’t want to lose in a game, either—especially not to Cheng Orange.
“Again, again.” He picked Ryu once more.
Cheng Orange beamed.
She knew Shen Yao would be stubborn. She understood her childhood friend’s temperament best.
If she let him win, Shen Yao would actually lose interest. Only when he was under pressure would his extraordinary perseverance show.
“Why don’t we switch games? How about a cooperative one?” she suggested on purpose.
With that, Shen Yao was even less willing to switch. “No, this one.”
In the second round, Shen Yao was defeated in a flash. Then the third, the fourth.
Midway, Cheng Orange wanted to switch characters, but Shen Yao wouldn’t allow it.
They played all afternoon, and Shen Yao didn’t win a single round.
“Watch my flying kick~” Cheng Orange shouted.
On the screen, the karate girl leaped into a kick, knocking the big burly man flat on his back.
“K.O” flashed on the screen, declaring Shen Yao’s final defeat.
This was perfectly normal.
After all, Cheng Orange was blacklisted at arcades, the kind of legend who could play all day on a single coin, scaring off every other kid in elementary school.
The rumor was, with the coins she’d won, she could buy out the whole snack shop.
After winning all afternoon, Cheng Orange was on a roll.
She kept letting out weird cries and, on a whim, swung her long, fair leg in imitation of the game character, aiming a playful kick at Shen Yao.
But it was really just her gently pressing her foot against Shen Yao’s stomach, giggling non-stop.
Shen Yao, after losing all afternoon, was feeling a bit sulky.
Seeing Cheng Orange making herself an easy target, he threw down his controller, grabbed her ankle with one hand, and started tickling the sole of her foot with the other.
Cheng Orange was extremely ticklish. She immediately tried to break free.
“Ah, stop, don’t tickle me! You’re cheating! You lose in the game so you cheat in real life, sore loser! Hahaha! Stop, stop! Hahaha!”
She pressed her other foot to Shen Yao’s face, trying to force her way free.
But how could Shen Yao let her win?
He grabbed her other leg and suddenly half-sat up, lifting both of Cheng Orange’s beautiful legs onto his shoulders.
By any measure, Cheng Orange’s legs were stunning—thighs full and round, calves long and toned, inner thighs with clear muscle lines from frequent exercise, not bulky but perfectly accentuating her leg shape.
With both legs pinned on Shen Yao’s shoulders, Cheng Orange lost the upper hand and could only protest, “You’re just a sore loser, bullying people when you lose.”
Shen Yao stubbornly replied, “You kicked me first.”
“That was hardly a kick! You just can’t stand losing, you can’t stand losing, you can’t stand losing.” Cheng Orange pouted dramatically.
Shen Yao, hearing that, suddenly felt a little ashamed.
A grown man losing a game and bullying a girl to make up for it.
Thinking that, he was about to let go.
But as soon as he relaxed, Cheng Orange’s legs tightened, those full thighs squeezing Shen Yao’s head in the middle, and with a shift of her waist, she easily flipped Shen Yao onto the floor—turning from the passive into the dominant position.
She was no ordinary girl; Shen Yao not only lost the game, but also lost in real life.
Cheng Orange crossed her legs, clamping Shen Yao’s head between them as he lay on the ground, laughing proudly.
“You still lost~” Shen Yao tried to move his head, but his breath was hot as it brushed forward.
Suddenly, Cheng Orange’s face flushed, and she instinctively tried to clamp tighter.
It was only then that she realized how indecent this posture was—how could she pin a boy’s head between her thighs?
They weren’t little kids anymore…
Shen Yao opened his mouth. “I give up, let me—”
“Don’t—don’t talk!” Cheng Orange shouted hurriedly.
Shen Yao was puzzled.
“There’s… there’s hot air…”
She blurted that out, then quickly released her legs and let Shen Yao go, pressing her own legs together and sitting properly to the side.
