Later that evening, at home, Ye Xinglan cupped Xiaoxi’s face and examined her carefully for quite a long time. She even tugged gently before finally patting her head with relief.
“All right, looks like this one’s the real deal.”
Xiao Keke, who was responsible for escorting Xiaoxi back, nodded beside them.
“The people from the Magical Girl Association said that my sister was attacked by a monster. After checking her personal information, they contacted her relatives and told me to bring her back.”
“It’s my first time going to a place like the Magical Girl Association. It really looks impressive~”
Xiaoxi twitched the corner of her mouth. That little brat sure was good at making things up, wasn’t she? And yet she had the nerve to say that to her!
“I never expected to be this unlucky,” Xiaoxi sighed. “
I was rushing to work and took a shortcut through an alley. The next thing I remember is everything going black… When I opened my eyes again, I was already in the association’s medical room.”
Neither of the others doubted her story.
Although the Magical Girl Association had a special department for monitoring magic power, it was impossible for them to cover every corner of the city.
Inevitably, some monsters would slip through the cracks and be born from their cocoons.
Especially slimes, those low-level monsters with almost no magical fluctuations—they were even easier to evade detection than high-level monsters.
“That’s not unlucky, that’s just being trash~”
Ye Xinglan patted Xiaoxi’s head like coaxing a child. “Slimes are such weak monsters that even a normal adult male might not be able to defeat one. Luckily, you didn’t get hurt.”
Xiao Keke puckered her lips, ready to leave. Since her sister was already brought back safely, she had no interest in sticking around to keep watching these two shower each other with affection.
Besides, Xiao Keke couldn’t help but feel that these two girls seemed even closer than before. Living together really did seem to make feelings grow over time.
Held firmly in Ye Xinglan’s arms, Xiaoxi breathed a sigh of relief when she heard the door close.
Thank goodness Miss L helped out—otherwise, there was no way she could have faked it today.
But thinking it over carefully, why had that slime suddenly become so excited and active?
When she had subdued the slime, Xiaoxi had sensed something was off.
The slime’s extreme excitement had caused it to lose control over its mimicry form.
That was strange because slimes were known for their docile nature.
Otherwise, it wouldn’t be used as a lab rat in the association’s experiments. It really shouldn’t get excited so easily.
Had it been stimulated by something…? Xiaoxi recalled how the slime had been sniffing around Ye Xinglan nonstop.
Could it be because of Ye Xinglan?
With that thought, Xiaoxi subconsciously sniffed her own nose. The scent of Ye Xinglan’s facial cleanser was so strong it almost made her dizzy.
A faint, fresh fragrance lingered at her nostrils, but beyond that, she smelled nothing else.
Sisters, you smell so good.jpg
This wasn’t the first time something like this happened.
The magical energy storage orb had also started to stir only after Ye Xinglan entered the room.
Could it be that Ye Xinglan had some kind of constitution that easily attracted monsters?
Xiaoxi didn’t understand. She’d been a magical girl for years and had never heard of any ordinary person having such a special constitution.
Or perhaps… Ye Xinglan wasn’t an ordinary person?
Still, Xiaoxi didn’t voice her suspicion—Ye Xinglan’s facial cleanser was smothering her to the point she couldn’t even get the words out.
“Stop squirming, I’m going to cook! Let me out!”
Xiaoxi’s slightly annoyed, embarrassed voice came from within Ye Xinglan’s embrace, sounding muffled.
After dinner, Xiaoxi sat in her room typing. She stared at the screen for a long time before hesitantly pressing the keyboard.
“But she didn’t notice that the other tentacle of the tentacle monster was lurking in the shadows, waiting for the right moment to slip inside along the hem of her skirt.”
“She instinctively clamped her legs together…”
At that point, Xiaoxi stopped again.
After a few seconds of hesitation, she furiously hit the delete key and erased the two sentences she had just written.
Xiaoxi sighed with a headache. Writer’s block was painful!
But it wasn’t that she couldn’t think of the plot. Ever since she found out Muxing Ge had joined the reader group, she felt restrained and didn’t dare to write freely.
This had made her recent storylines more conservative, and many readers had commented that her plots had become very plain lately… But Xiaoxi was just too chicken to take risks!
If it weren’t for Ye Xinglan having sent her a bunch of gifts on the whole site notification, boosting her popularity, Xiaoxi was sure her followers would have dropped quite a bit these past days.
Just as she was stuck, her computer’s QQ suddenly started beeping again—someone was @-mentioning her in the reader group.
Eternal Star, where are you: “The author’s plots have been so bland recently, just everyday life stuff. The scene where Muxing Ge loses has even become rare.”
Xiaoxi was so mad she wanted to storm into Ye Xinglan’s room and elbow her.
How many times had she told her not to mention Muxing Ge’s name in the group? And yet she never listened!
Just in case, Xiaoxi posted a universal safety disclaimer in the group.
Group owner: “@Eternal Star, where are you, darling, the protagonist I’m writing just happens to resemble Muxing Ge a bit, but they absolutely have no relation whatsoever.”
After sending that message, Xiaoxi closed the chat window, out of sight, out of mind, and continued typing. But before long, the group was bombarded with message alerts again.
Opening the reader group chat, she saw—just as expected—Ye Xinglan and Muxing Ge were at it again, arguing.
Xiaoxi felt a headache coming on. She gave each ten minutes of mute time and then sighed deeply before posting an announcement banning arguments in the group.
She had thought about kicking them out, but Ye Xinglan had gifted so much that kicking her out felt disrespectful to the big spender.
As for Muxing Ge, Xiaoxi didn’t want to stir the pot. She had to pretend not to know that account belonged to Muxing Ge. Otherwise, if that temperamental girl got angry, she might find a way to box her off.
Xiaoxi was certain that Muxing Ge, when red-hot angry, was capable of doing exactly that.
At this point, Xiaoxi’s only thought was—writing a novel is really hard!
…
The next afternoon, Xiaoxi was working as usual in the café when suddenly a large group of people flooded in through the door.
“Hello, welcome to Nightingale Café~”
Xiaoxi greeted them with her usual smile, but froze slightly when she recognized who they were.
Leading the group were several people wearing the Magical Girl Association’s uniforms, followed by two magical girls: [Little Red Riding Hood] Xiao Keke and [Nightingale Songstress] Muxing Ge.
Why was the association suddenly showing up here?
Not far away, Ye Xinglan’s body stiffened slightly. A thought popped into her mind—had her identity been exposed? Were the association people here to arrest her?
But without knowing the truth, Ye Xinglan stayed seated, calm and unmoving.
“We are from the Magical Girl Association, here for a routine inspection.”
The person at the front flashed a badge at Xiaoxi. “May I ask if the manager is present?”
