The system info revealed that in his previous life, Peng Kai never met Gu Shinan at Chen Group.
This life, he met her on his first day—and she transformed into Peng Kai’s mentor. Lan Hui was no fool. If there wasn’t some scheme, she wouldn’t believe it.
It was probably a plot from the Chen family elders.
They knew Peng Kai and Lan Hui were close and inseparable, so they brought in an ex-girlfriend to drive a wedge between them.
With the ex always around, how could the current girlfriend not feel threatened? If she caused trouble with Peng Kai, over time their relationship would certainly fall apart.
Then, without the elders having to intervene, Peng Kai and Lan Hui would naturally break up.
That would be just what they wanted.
As for Gu Shinan, they weren’t truly satisfied with her either—they were just using her. Once Peng Kai and Gu Shinan broke up, they would find a way to get rid of her.
Lan Hui didn’t get angry. There was no use in it. Peng Kai wasn’t the type to keep lingering ties, and he was even more straightforward than her.
He had confessed so openly during their meal. Since he cared about her so much, what was there to worry about?
“Good that you’re not angry,” Peng Kai said, seeing her smiling brightly, definitely not looking upset. He secretly breathed a sigh of relief.
Lan Hui fed him a chicken drumstick. “Eat quickly. You’ve been distracted and haven’t eaten properly.”
Peng Kai said, “I’ve been on edge all day, afraid you’d get mad.”
Lan Hui laughed. “I’m not that petty. As long as your heart is with me, you’re like a kite in the sky. No matter how high or far you fly, the string is always in my hand—you can’t run away.”
“But seriously, Brother Kai, now that you’re a rich heir, shouldn’t I be the one tiptoeing around you? How come it’s the other way around? You need to have confidence!”
Peng Kai thoughtfully fed Lan Hui some tea tree mushrooms. “You chose to be with me in my low point, not caring about money or my status.”
“You stayed true to your heart. You’re so good to me, I must cherish you twice as much. Otherwise, if I lose you, where would I find such a great girlfriend?”
Lan Hui sipped her juice, smiling gently. “Your status has changed, so many excellent girls will be chasing after you. There are plenty better than me.”
“You’re the best. No one else,” Peng Kai said seriously.
Lan Hui felt comfortable hearing that. She helped him by serving more food. “Brother Kai, eat more.”
Seeing how warm and considerate his girlfriend was, Peng Kai smiled, feeling his appetite open up.
He then took out a black card from his pocket and handed it to Lan Hui. “Fu Fu, this is the Black Card my dad gave me last night. It has no spending limit. I’m giving it to you now. Buy whatever you want.”
Lan Hui didn’t accept it. Her smile vanished, and she said seriously, “This card is from your parents. I can’t accept it because it’s their hard-earned money and their feelings for you.”
“I will only accept your Wage Card in the future. If I spend money, it will be from my own man’s hard-earned salary.”
Peng Kai laughed. “Alright, when I get my Wage Card this weekend, I’ll hand it over to you.”
Lan Hui added, “I said after we get married.”
Peng Kai looked serious. “I want you to manage it now.”
Lan Hui disagreed. “You still have debts. You should pay them off first.”
Peng Kai was honest. “The debt isn’t much, just a few thousand a month. I can pay it off monthly from the Wage Card. The rest is yours.”
Actually, his parents wanted to help him pay the debt but he refused. At 27 years old, he didn’t want to rely on their money.
He hadn’t wanted the Black Card at first either, but after his parents found out he was in a relationship, they said he’d need more money for the relationship.
Considering he had never bought anything decent or taken her out on a good day, he reluctantly accepted it.
The girl was impressive—she didn’t want the card and had her own principles.
No wonder she was the one he liked.
Lan Hui smiled. “Since Brother Kai wants me to be the housekeeper, I’ll reluctantly accept.”
Peng Kai laughed. “Then I owe the little housekeeper thanks for managing the money.”
Lan Hui stopped joking. “Eat up, or the food will get cold.”
“Okay,” Peng Kai nodded.
After dinner, Peng Kai paid the bill and held Lan Hui’s hand as they stepped outside.
“Fu Fu, I’ll take you home first, then I have to go to the auto repair shop.”
Lan Hui was shocked. “So late and you still have to go? When will you get back?”
Peng Kai explained honestly, “Xiao Pang has a modified car today. I need to go there and teach him hands-on. I want to get him up to speed.”
Lan Hui understood. The family reunion was sudden. If he didn’t shoulder more responsibilities, Xiao Pang wouldn’t manage.
“Okay, then come back early to rest. You have work tomorrow. Don’t overwork yourself. I’ll worry about you.”
Peng Kai’s handsome face was full of warmth. “Okay, little housekeeper.”
The car drove for more than twenty minutes to the residential complex.
Lan Hui saw Peng Kai was about to back into the parking spot and quickly said, “Brother Kai, I can get upstairs by myself. You don’t have to drop me off. Parking is too much trouble.”
Peng Kai saw how considerate she was. Even though he was tired from work, he still felt energized, as if he had endless strength.
“Fu Fu, you’re so good. When you get home, send me a message.”
Lan Hui laughed. “I’ll be upstairs in two minutes. Do I really have to message you?”
“Message me,” Peng Kai said seriously. “Otherwise, I won’t feel at ease.”
“Okay, a good boyfriend always listens.”
The destination was right before them.
Lan Hui happily thought about how she had just been promoted to housekeeper. Her life was on the rise.
Peng Kai looked at her with infinite tenderness.
Lan Hui unbuckled her seatbelt, leaned in to kiss his lips briefly, then quickly pulled away. “I’m off.”
If it weren’t for the appointment with Xiao Pang, Peng Kai would have wanted to pull her back immediately and kiss her properly.
He wanted her to know the consequences of teasing him.
After watching her enter the lobby, Peng Kai turned the car around and drove out of the complex.
The bodyguard car behind them kept a steady distance.
Lan Hui was obedient and sent Peng Kai a message as soon as she got home. Then she took a shower and started watching dramas.
By eleven at night, Peng Kai still hadn’t come back, so she gave up waiting and went to sleep.
***
The next morning, Lan Hui bumped into Peng Kai in the bathroom. He was brushing his teeth. She smiled and wrapped her arms around his waist. “Brother Kai, good morning.”
Peng Kai handed her his toothbrush and stepped aside, making room for her.
They brushed their teeth together, silent but smiling. The scene was warm and harmonious.
After breakfast, they held hands and happily headed to work.
Lan Hui sat in the passenger seat, her eyes mostly on Peng Kai.
He wore a blue suit today, less cold and sharp than the black suit yesterday, more noble.
Lan Hui thought he looked more handsome the more she looked.
Peng Kai coughed twice awkwardly. “If you keep looking at me like that, aren’t you afraid of getting into trouble?”
Lan Hui instantly understood and blushed, quickly turning her head to look out the window.
“It’s daytime. Brother Kai, why are you talking nonsense?”
Peng Kai feigned calm. “Can’t say it during the day—what about at night?”
Lan Hui whispered, “As if you have time for that at night! You’re busy as a spinning top, and I don’t even know when you got home last night.”
Xiao Pang still hadn’t gotten the hang of things, and this busy schedule would probably last for months, with no sign of improving.
Peng Kai didn’t hear clearly. “What did you say?”
Lan Hui shook her head. “Nothing, just drive safely.”
***
Peng Kai had just entered the Project Department when Gu Shinan saw him from afar and greeted him enthusiastically.
“Peng Kai, good morning!”
Peng Kai nodded lightly, acknowledging her.
Images of their past together flashed in his mind. Back then, he had pampered her and made all the compromises; she rarely took the initiative.
Now she had completely turned around, and it made him somewhat uncomfortable.
Peng Kai put down his bag and opened his computer to work, not even glancing at Gu Shinan sitting beside him.
Gu Shinan’s feelings were complicated. She had made a special effort in her appearance today, wearing a low-cut top, hoping to catch his attention. But he hadn’t even given her a look.
She didn’t give up. Taking a deep breath, she adjusted her mood and spoke gently, “Peng Kai, look at the project materials I sent you last night.”
“They are all completed cases. If you study them, you’ll understand the basic steps. I will guide you through the projects.”
Peng Kai nodded. “Got it.”
Gu Shinan added, “I heard from Manager Zhong that there’s a department gathering to celebrate you today. You agreed yesterday?”
Peng Kai nodded. “Yes.”
Manager Zhong was too enthusiastic; he couldn’t refuse. Now that he was part of the Project Department, it made sense to get to know the colleagues better for future work.
Gu Shinan smiled, satisfied with the answer. “Then you get to work.”
Peng Kai ignored her and continued flipping through the materials.
At lunch, Peng Kai went alone to the cafeteria. His aura was cold and unapproachable. No one from the Project Department invited him to join.
Before he started dating Lan Hui, he had always been alone and didn’t mind.
He queued for his meal and found an empty seat.
He had just taken two bites when a girl came and sat across from him. He looked up and saw it was Gu Shinan.
Peng Kai instinctively frowned.
Gu Shinan hurriedly explained, “There were no seats anywhere else. Yours was the only empty one. You don’t mind, right?”
What could Peng Kai say? The cafeteria was a public place!
He said nothing and hurriedly ate, gobbling down his food in less than five minutes before getting up with his empty tray and leaving.
