After the group left, Lan Hui asked: “Chen Shao? Kai, did you already change your name?”
Peng Kai nodded: “My parents want me to change it to Chen Kai! I agreed.”
Lan Hui responded with an “Oh.” She had known Peng Kai would change his name sooner or later but didn’t expect it to be so soon—perhaps due to his deep longing for love.
Having lost his family from childhood and finally finding them again, he naturally treasured them and obeyed them more.
“Fufu, tomorrow I officially join the Chen Group Project Department.” Peng Kai said while unpacking.
“That’s good.” Lan Hui had no objection.
“It’s quite far from your workplace. I’ll drive you to and from work. But when you have time, maybe get your driver’s license. If I can’t pick you up, you can drive yourself.”
“Got it.” Lan Hui smiled brightly, grabbing a suitcase to pull into the room.
Peng Kai quickly helped: “I’ll handle that.” He pulled it into the master bedroom.
The master bedroom was about a hundred square meters, with a two-meter-wide bed already made up with fresh sheets and a refreshing green set—definitely a style girls liked and guys could accept.
There was also a sofa, coffee table, desk, and an extra-large wardrobe.
Simple yet elegant, very beautiful.
Lan Hui opened the wardrobe to put away clothes and suddenly noticed it was packed with clothes—both men’s and women’s styles.
Her face flushed deeply.
Was Peng Kai planning to live with her?
Her heart fluttered uncontrollably.
At that moment, Peng Kai came in with another bag. Seeing the full wardrobe, he looked a bit embarrassed:
“My parents think we’re already living together, so they put the clothes together. Sorry, I’ll move my clothes out.”
He quickly put down the bag and went to the wardrobe, taking out all the men’s clothes to the bedroom.
Lan Hui sighed in relief. It was arranged by his parents. She had thought he was going to share a bed with her.
She had been so nervous just a moment ago.
But that night at the hotel, he had already lost control, and she had shown willingness. Why did he want separate rooms now?
Before she could ponder, Peng Kai brought in another bag: “Fufu, try these new clothes. Mom specially prepared them for you.”
Lan Hui smiled sweetly: “Please thank Auntie for me.”
She flipped through the clothes one by one—these were all the latest styles, leaning towards sweet and pretty.
She had to admit Auntie had excellent taste. Even having met her only once, she knew exactly what clothes suited her.
Looks like she benefited by association. Being Peng Kai’s girlfriend, she got a share of the sweetness.
Xue Fen was a woman with high emotional intelligence. Even if she didn’t think much of Lan Hui, as long as she was Peng Kai’s girlfriend, she treated her well.
After all, a girlfriend was still just a girlfriend—not necessarily a wife.
She drew a clear line.
***
Lan Hui finished organizing her room, then went to the second bedroom to make Peng Kai’s bed and tidy up his room.
“Fufu, from now on, we’ll have a cleaner come regularly. You don’t have to work so hard.”
Lan Hui nodded: “Got it.”
She wasn’t a fool. Since they could afford a cleaner, she naturally didn’t want to do all the cleaning herself.
A three-hundred-plus-square-meter house, cleaning every day—it would be exhausting.
She was already tired from working and studying at night. She didn’t want to come home to more work.
“Tonight my parents want us to eat at the villa. Fufu, will you come with me?”
Lan Hui was tired and didn’t want to go: “Kai, I’ve been busy all day. I’m a bit tired and want to rest at home. You go alone this time. When I’m free, I’ll go with you.”
Peng Kai nodded: “Alright, I’ll go alone this time. You rest well at home.”
“You should come back early to rest, too. You didn’t get much sleep last night handing over things to Xiao Pang.”
“All right, I’ll come back after dinner.”
Peng Kai smiled.
Lan Hui reminded him once more.
After seeing Peng Kai off, she cleaned the master bedroom again, took a shower, lay on the bed watching a movie, and then fell asleep.
Peng Kai returned past nine at night. His parents, having just recognized him, had spent a lot of time talking as a family of three.
The room was quiet; the young lady must have already fallen asleep. He tiptoed to wash without waking her.
***
The next morning, Lan Hui went to wash up and happened to meet Peng Kai preparing breakfast. He was dressed in a black suit, which stunned her.
Peng Kai was handsome on his own, with a cool aura. Wearing a black suit added a cold aristocratic air, giving off a strong elite vibe.
“Kai, you look so handsome today.” Lan Hui’s admiration showed clearly as she quickly ran up and hugged his waist.
Her clinginess pleased Peng Kai, who bent down to kiss her forehead: “Go wash up and come eat.”
Lan Hui beamed: “Okay.”
Though the master bedroom had a bathroom, their toiletries had always been shared in the common bathroom outside.
Lan Hui kept hers in the master bedroom, but Peng Kai found it inconvenient, so she still used the public bathroom.
On the sink, the toothbrush had toothpaste on it, the cup was filled with water, and the basin had hot water—just like their old rental place.
Though Peng Kai’s status had changed, his care for her hadn’t.
Five minutes later, Lan Hui came out, and Peng Kai was already waiting at the table.
“This breakfast is from the neighborhood entrance. I don’t know if it tastes good, try it first. If you don’t like it, I’ll get a different one tomorrow.”
The table had century egg pork congee, fried dough sticks, soy milk, and tea eggs.
“Nice.” Lan Hui’s eyes curved as she sat down and took a bite of the fried dough stick. “It tastes good.”
“Glad you like it.”
Peng Kai smiled.
After breakfast, hand in hand, they went to work.
Sea Island Blue Bay was about a twenty-minute drive from Lan Hui’s workplace. Peng Kai dropped her off at eight and then headed to his own job.
Today was Peng Kai’s first day at Chen Group’s Project Department. He kept a low profile and had told his parents in advance. He didn’t want anyone to know his identity.
Unexpectedly, while waiting for the elevator, he ran into someone he hadn’t wanted to see for over a year—a nightmare even if reduced to ashes.
Gu Shinan!
She was also working here!
She looked much more mature than before, dressed in a black professional suit, beautiful and elegant with a sharp, capable aura.
Peng Kai glanced once and immediately looked away.
He had thought he’d never let go, but seeing her now, he felt an unprecedented calm.
He was certain he no longer loved her, nor felt any lingering attachment.
Shinan also noticed Peng Kai. Dressed sharply in a suit, he stood out. Though his aura was cold, his handsomeness drew many glances.
She hadn’t expected to see him here at Chen Group after over a year apart.
What was he doing here? Judging by his clothes, was he applying as a driver?
The elevator arrived, and Shinan hurried in without thinking more.
Peng Kai followed.
Shinan pressed the button for the fifth floor. Peng Kai glanced over; they were on the first floor. He quietly stood aside.
After a moment, the elevator reached the fifth floor. Shinan hurried out, Peng Kai followed.
She couldn’t help but ask: “Are you applying as a driver?”
Though they hadn’t contacted each other in over a year, she couldn’t pretend not to see him now.
Peng Kai calmly scanned the surroundings, trying to find the Project Department.
Seeing he didn’t answer, Shinan frowned: “What, are you really pretending not to know me?”
Peng Kai said lightly, “No, I’m here to work.”
Shinan was surprised: “You’re not a driver? What position then?”
Chen Group was famous nationwide, ranking in the top ten assets domestically and part of the Fortune 500. Everyone working here graduated from prestigious schools.
Graduates with master’s degrees like her were everywhere inside. She had once been proud of her degree, but after joining Chen Group, she realized there were always more talented people.
Peng Kai said, “I’m with the Project Department. Today is my first day. Do you know how to get there?”
Chen Group was huge, and even finding the fifth floor made Peng Kai dizzy. To avoid being late, he had to ask Shinan.
Shinan’s pupils contracted sharply, afraid she misheard, and asked again: “You said you’re with the Project Department?”
Peng Kai nodded faintly: “Do you know the way?”
Shinan was speechless: “Who brought you for the interview?”
Peng Kai, not wanting to waste words, said nothing.
Shinan said, “Tell me who brought you, and I’ll take you to the Project Department.”
Peng Kai said: “No one took me for an interview. I was directly notified to come to work. Can you take me now?”
Shinan said firmly: “Peng Kai, you’ve been tricked.”
Peng Kai frowned deeply.
Shinan continued: “Do you know what kind of degrees the Project Department hires? At least a master’s degree or above.”
“With your high school diploma, do you think you could get in? Whoever told you to come is definitely a scammer.”
Peng Kai didn’t want to argue.
At that moment, the elevator doors opened and a colleague stepped out. Peng Kai took two steps forward: “Hello, could you tell me how to get to the Project Department?”
The man, seeing Peng Kai’s distinguished aura, mistook him for a client and eagerly led him to the Project Department.
Shinan called after him: “Peng Kai, you really got scammed. Check the phone number. It’s definitely fake!”
Peng Kai ignored her and entered the Project Department, then knocked on the manager’s office door.
The manager was a man in his forties named Zhong Sheng. He had received notice from HR last night that a new colleague would arrive today, and he had been waiting early.
When Peng Kai knocked, he said, “Come in.”
Zhong Sheng quickly stood to welcome him: “Are you Peng Kai?”
Peng Kai nodded: “Yes.” Though he had agreed to change his name to Chen Kai, his ID hadn’t been updated yet, so he used Peng Kai for onboarding.
Zhong Sheng shook hands warmly: “I’m Zhong Sheng from the Project Department. I received the HR notice last night. Welcome to the team.”
“Thank you.” Peng Kai nodded politely and withdrew his hand.
“I’ll have someone take you to HR to complete your onboarding.” Zhong Sheng said as he stepped out and called:
“Gu Shinan, please take the new colleague to HR and show them around Chen Group so they can get familiar with the environment.”
Shinan was stunned: “What? Him…” Her brows knitted tightly. “Manager Zhong, are you sure this is correct?” Even now, she couldn’t believe it—a high school graduate working in the Project Department!
