Re-entering the interrogation room
He Feng was stunned when Yu Song mentioned catching a mistress.
Who exactly was this girl, and how did she know about the recent bitter conflict between him and Zhao Xue over this matter?
In truth, He Feng knew his suspicions were unfounded, but Yu Song’s sudden appearance was so abrupt, and her behavior so strange—just moments ago, she had jumped onto the bay window to watch He Zilu dance—that he couldn’t help but suspect she harbored some ulterior motive, deliberately coming to witness He Zilu’s disgrace.
Gu Zhi also felt that Yu Song was suspicious and questioned why she showed up here.
“Xiao Gao, why are you coming to He Zilu’s house so late at night?
You said she bullied you, which should have happened at school, right?
Why didn’t you wait until school started to confront her?
Also, how do you even know her home address?”
He Feng quickly chimed in, “Yeah, how did you find this place? And how do you know my wife and I have been having problems lately?”
Yu Song looked innocent.
“Is it hard to find? He Zilu isn’t as selfish as you say. She brags about where you and Zhao Xue work, and where you live. She even posts pictures of meals from Miqilin online. As for your marital problems, I overheard it just now outside the door. She’s actually kept it very secret; everyone thinks her family is happy.”
He Feng felt a little awkward.
“Young girls love to show off, that’s all. My wife and I just have some minor disagreements. We really do have a happy family. Yu Tongxue, I’m grateful you helped save Zilu, but your behavior just now was… too… too…”
Before he could find the right words, Yu Song interrupted him, “Mr. He, you can tell Officer Gu here every little thing I just did. Let him thoroughly investigate whether I was trying to harm your daughter.”
Gu Zhi quickly soothed, “Xiao Yu, don’t get emotional. No one’s accusing you of hurting He Zilu. We’re just curious about your timing and motive for being here. How did you know she attempted suicide?”
“I didn’t know! It was a complete coincidence. But I do want to remind Mr. He that whoever harmed her didn’t do it directly; it was all indirect influence. If anyone around He Zilu had noticed she was acting strange and intervened earlier, none of this would have happened.”
He Feng was even more embarrassed.
He claimed to care about his daughter, yet felt guilty because his concern was limited to giving money or taking her out for nice meals.
He never asked what she liked or what she was thinking.
He believed that as a father, providing a good material life was enough.
“I’m too busy at work. Zilu’s always been under her mother’s care. I don’t know how this happened. Zhao Xue and I will fully cooperate with the police investigation. If anyone did lead Zilu to attempt suicide, I will never let them off.”
Yu Song sneered.
“Well said.”
Gu Zhi couldn’t help but ask her, “Are you feeling sorry for He Zilu? Didn’t you just say she often bullied you?”
“I don’t feel sorry for her. I’m just stating facts. Officer Gu, if there’s nothing else, may I leave?”
Gu Zhi waved the evidence bag in his hand helplessly.
“I’m afraid you need to come with us to the Criminal Investigation Team for further questioning.”
The officers at the precinct were actually quite happy the Criminal Investigation Team had taken over.
This case looked tough to handle, and now they just had to transfer the person.
Yu Song wasn’t handcuffed this time and even got into Gu Zhi’s car.
While driving, Gu Zhi looked at Yu Song through the rearview mirror.
“Want me to call your family? It might be tomorrow before we can send you back. Even if it finishes today, it’ll be late.”
“No need. My family doesn’t have a curfew. No one cares what time I get home. Just don’t keep me up like last time. No one died this time, and I’m not a suspect.”
Gu Zhi thought of the last time she stayed at the Criminal Investigation Team for twenty-four hours without family coming to find her.
He suddenly felt a pang of sympathy.
No matter how rebellious, she was just a freshly twenty-year-old university student—still a child in most parents’ eyes.
“Last time you said you wanted to be an informant because life was boring and you wanted some excitement. Or were you trying to earn some money from it?”
Yu Song laughed.
“I never said I wanted to be an informant, but those two reasons aren’t mutually exclusive.”
Gu Zhi was just making small talk; Yu Song clearly didn’t intend to tell the truth, so they chatted on about nonsense.
When they arrived at the Criminal Investigation Team, as Yu Song got out of the car, she asked calmly, “Captain Gu, even if you’re on duty, you’re at the Criminal Investigation Team, right? Can a 110 emergency call be directed here? Will the precinct actually report real-time to the Criminal Investigation Team on calls at night?”
Gu Zhi couldn’t fool her, so he admitted straightforwardly, “That’s right. I was watching you. It’s our normal procedure, not personal.”
“You said the Zhou Yaohui case has been cleared. Why lie?”
“We only confirmed the culprit. Some details still need thorough investigation.”
Yu Song said, “Then when I’m completely cleared of suspicion, please notify me. I don’t want to be followed around like a suspect all the time. It’s too unfair.”
Gu Zhi smiled.
“Then you have to make sure you don’t show up at crime scenes anymore.”
“Is the He family’s house a crime scene? He Zilu hasn’t even jumped yet.”
Gu Zhi found this girl really sharp-tongued, never willing to lose an argument.
“Why don’t you ask who killed Zhou Yaohui?”
“Besides the driver Meng Dawei, who else could it be?”
“That’s right, it was him. Zhou Xiaoheng is ruthless. He didn’t like men at all, but to use Meng Dawei, he pretended to be in love and said once he inherited the fortune, he’d marry Meng Dawei abroad.”
Yu Song already knew who the culprit was, but these details were new.
She couldn’t help but sigh, “I never expected Meng Dawei was such a romantic. He’d do anything for Zhou Xiaoheng.”
Gu Zhi then took her to the door of the interrogation room from last time.
As he opened it, he glanced sideways at Yu Song’s expression.
She remained calm and composed, which made him even more suspicious.
Young girls who had never committed crimes usually got scared being taken to the precinct for questioning.
When Yu Song was first brought here, she really seemed frightened, but he soon realized all those emotions were feigned.
Most people would develop psychological shadows after a day and night of intense interrogation.
Returning to this room might cause anger or fear.
If innocent, they might even ask, “I’m not a suspect this time, why interrogate me again?”
But Yu Song was calm, neither scared nor angry.
She was unlike any suspect Gu Zhi had met before.
Yu Song wasn’t as mentally complex; interrogation rooms didn’t have levels anyway—one was as bad as another.
But if Gu Zhi tried to interrogate her the way he did last time with bright lights and handcuffs, she definitely wouldn’t cooperate.
Fortunately, Gu Zhi only asked normal questions this time and even poured her a glass of water.
His first question wasn’t about He Zilu.
“Zhou Yaohui’s assistant recognized you and said you had a conflict with him in the mall a few days ago. Why didn’t you mention this during interrogation? Also, you claimed never to have met Zhou Yaohui?”
Yu Song was startled and pretended to be surprised.
“Huh? What conflict? I don’t remember.”
“The escalator on the left wing of Wan Yang Plaza. We already found the footage. Only Zhou Yaohui and his group were on the escalator. You just squeezed in and bumped into him.”
“Oh, I remember now! You mean that incident?”
Yu Song grew a bit impatient.
Captain Gu was too responsible.
If he were a lazy old hand, he’d have closed the case after finding the real culprit.
Gu Zhi asked, “You didn’t recognize him then?”
“Didn’t I say everyone knows that famous entrepreneur?”
Yu Song snorted lightly.
“Officer Gu, did you really watch the footage? I didn’t bump into him—it was the other way around. And he was really unhappy about it. Are you like him, thinking I deliberately squeezed in to get close to the chairman of the Zhou Group? Please, that escalator holds twenty people. I was rushing to an interview; I had to get on.”
Yu Song put on a face full of envy and cynicism.
“His bodyguards stopped people, that’s their fault. Even if the whole mall belongs to the Zhou family, the escalator is open to all customers. If he’s got the guts, he should have a private escalator. I was in a hurry and didn’t even look at his face or recognize him. His assistant just mocked me there.”
Gu Zhi noticed from the footage that Yu Song looked very embarrassed and didn’t retort after being mocked, so awkward she probably wished she could crawl into the cracks of the escalator.
But he already knew Yu Song was good at pretending and wouldn’t easily believe her.
Gu Zhi pressed, “You didn’t recognize who he was?”
“At first, no. After the assistant spoke, I realized it was Chairman Zhou. My image shattered completely. I used to think he was a self-made entrepreneur, an inspiring role model. Didn’t expect him to be so rude. The escalator is so spacious, yet he acted so arrogant, refusing others to get on. When he came to our school to give a speech, he acted all down-to-earth, even ate in the Shangtang with struggling students! But now I see he looks down on people and thought I wanted to suck up to a big shot.”
Yu Song went on and on ranting, mostly expressing the original owner’s dislike of Zhou Yaohui.
Gu Zhi found it entertaining but had to interrupt to focus on the case.
“So you did recognize him but lied during interrogation?”
“Not really lying. We called it a conflict? That was one-sided insult. I said nothing during interrogation. Later online, I only complained about meeting a big shot who was completely different from his public image.”
Yu Song frowned at Gu Zhi.
“You’ve found the real culprit; why are you still following me? What are you suspicious of? And you say it’s not personal?”
Gu Zhi tapped his notebook.
“I’m just doing routine work. Any suspicious point must be investigated thoroughly. Now, let’s talk about your classmate He Zilu. You said she bullied you too. What kind of bullying?”
Yu Song smiled lightly and leaned in to scrutinize Gu Zhi.
“That word ‘too’ is interesting. Officer Gu, are you implying that anyone who bullies me ends up in trouble, so I’m your prime suspect?”
Gu Zhi looked into her bright, sharp eyes and raised an eyebrow.
“I didn’t say that. I’m just conducting a normal investigation. Are you feeling guilty?”
“Why should I be? You, Officer Gu, during interrogations or questioning, shouldn’t there be two people at least? Isn’t it against regulations for you to be alone?”
Gu Zhi pointed to the surveillance camera on the wall.
“The cameras are on, so it’s not a violation. It’s night, and only on-duty personnel are here. Special circumstances require special handling.”
He paused, then added, “Actually, your situation could have been arranged for tomorrow. But I heard from He Feng that you jumped onto the bay window and danced up there. That made me a little worried.”
Yu Song was stunned and asked, completely speechless, “You’re worried I want to kill myself too?”
