“It’s really impressive. Even the earphones you gave me can’t detect any Magic Power here.”
Lu Ren nodded. “Their methods are quite clever.”
“Can’t detect it? I guess my Magic Detection Device still needs improvement.”
“Don’t worry, your device is really good. It helped me escape those brainless Zombies.” Lu Ren comforted him. “It just can’t handle top-tier Shadow Beasts, but being able to do this much is already impressive.”
“Ah, you’re right.” Xu Wenxing sighed.
Just then, the phone on the table suddenly rang.
Xu Wenxing looked closely and saw that the caller was someone he really didn’t want to see right now.
‘Looks like I have to work again…’
“Brother Ren, do you still need help over there? Director Xu is calling me. If you don’t need help, I’ll take the call.”
“No need. Everything is fine here. Go ahead and answer.”
“Okay, I’ll talk to Director Xu first.”
After putting the Black Earphones on the table, Xu Wenxing answered the phone and asked, “Hello? Director Xu?”
“Xu Wenxing?! Are you free? I need your help right now!” Xu Panfeng’s tone sounded extremely urgent.
“…I’m free.”
‘Even though I really want to refuse Director Xu and prioritize serving my foster father…’
‘But from the tone of Director Xu’s voice, he’s probably in serious trouble.’
‘It might even be a matter of life and death.’
‘So I shouldn’t refuse.’
“Great! In that case, I’ll be at your place right away! Meet downstairs in five minutes!”
“Okay…”
“Beep, beep, beep.”
Before Xu Wenxing could respond, Director Xu hung up directly.
Staring at his Blazing Flame Lock Screen Wallpaper on his phone, Xu Wenxing was silent for a few seconds, then sighed quietly.
He took a sip of tea to moisten his throat, ate a cookie to fill his stomach, and then quickly went downstairs to wait for Director Xu.
After waiting downstairs for about two minutes, a black car that was almost speeding came to a stop in front of Xu Wenxing.
The driver rolled down the window and urged, “Xu Wenxing! Get in! I’ll explain the mission details on the way!”
“Okay.”
Xu Wenxing nodded, opened the car door, and sat in the back.
As soon as the door locked, Director Xu floored the accelerator, taking small roads to avoid red lights all the way, heading toward the outskirts of City A.
Looking out the window, Xu Wenxing noticed that the trees and Skyscrapers around were rushing past at an incredible speed. He was startled.
Xu Panfeng focused on driving, heading toward a distant abandoned mountain, ignoring Xu Wenxing in the back.
On a stretch of road full of rocks and weeds, Xu Wenxing looked at the winding path and thought, ‘Surely he’ll slow down now.’
But in the next second, Director Xu took a sharp turn, barely scraping by, using the nearby Drainage Ditch to take several curves in quick succession.
‘This…’
Xu Wenxing was stunned by Director Xu’s driving skills.
“Listen, this mission is very troublesome. Sapphire and the others need your help.” Just as Xu Wenxing was spacing out, Director Xu suddenly spoke from the driver’s seat.
Hearing him, Xu Wenxing quickly snapped back to attention and asked, “No problem. Specifically, what do you need me to do?”
“Analyze the cause of death and check if there’s any Magic Power at the scene.”
“Huh?” Xu Wenxing was taken aback. “My Magic Detection Device isn’t working?”
“That’s right. The Technical Department staff said the body seems to have been affected by Magic Power, but they can’t find any issues.” Director Xu replied. “As for Sapphire, she’s not feeling well and can’t perform the detection.”
“Not feeling well meaning…”
“You’ll see when you get there.”
Director Xu didn’t explain and continued driving, leaving the suspense until the end.
Though curious, Xu Wenxing nodded slightly, waiting for the moment they arrived.
The atmosphere in the car suddenly fell silent.
After a few more sharp turns, Director Xu drove to a Mountain Villa in the mountains.
He stopped the car, opened the door, and walked toward a direction where a cordon was set up in the distance.
Xu Wenxing followed behind Director Xu, curiously looking around, but noticed that most of the on-site security personnel were lowering their heads, avoiding a small house in the northwest direction, as if they were avoiding something.
“Follow me.”
Director Xu looked at the staff at the scene, sighed, and led Xu Wenxing toward the northwest.
Seeing this, the surrounding staff cast pitying glances at Xu Wenxing, making him nervous, wondering what he was about to encounter.
Soon, when they arrived at the small house, the first thing Xu Wenxing smelled was a foul odor.
It was like something had decayed, spreading the unpleasant smell from the small house.
Raising an eyebrow slightly, Xu Wenxing greeted the Technical Department staff, then tried to stay calm and walked in.
Immediately, what came into view were dismembered corpses and a pile of dissected animal remains.
Xu Wenxing’s brain short-circuited for a moment, then he furrowed his brow, bent down, and proactively approached one of the corpses.
Looking at the human torso in front of him, with several bones missing inexplicably, and the rotting eyeball in a seagull’s stomach far away, Xu Wenxing took a deep breath and instantly understood what had happened.
“Cough. How are you? Can you find anything abnormal?”
Sapphire’s voice came from behind. She coughed lightly and asked Xu Wenxing, clearly uncomfortable with the gruesome scene.
“Yeah, someone was eating people here. Sliced them alive.”
Xu Wenxing looked at the condition of the corpse and replied briefly.
Sapphire fell silent upon hearing this.
“They drank a lot of water before death. Otherwise, the remains wouldn’t have stayed like this. And they must have been affected by a creature with Magic Power.”
“…What kind of effect?” Director Xu asked curiously.
“I don’t know. I guess it kept them calm, made them eat only vegetarian food to ensure they had no bad smell while alive. And before death, they were drained of blood.”
Xu Wenxing picked up a piece of bone and stated his conjecture.
The faces of the Technical Department staff changed color. They never imagined such a tragedy had occurred here.
Director Xu remained calm after listening, as if he had expected it.
He recalled the analysis from other local department staff, nodded slightly, clearly agreeing with Xu Wenxing.
Since the sequence of events was now clear, the rest would be easier.
“Great, you’ve been a huge help. Calling you to the scene was definitely the right choice.” Director Xu didn’t skimp on praise. “Thanks for your hard work. The killer will be handled by our department’s special talents from now on.”
“…No, there’s more than one killer.” Xu Wenxing suddenly said.
“More than one?”
“Other people without Magic Power were here, and they seemed very panicked.” Xu Wenxing looked at the indentations and cutting directions on a few bones and conjectured, “There might have been a large gathering here.”
“…I understand.” Director Xu said slowly.
