“Why the sudden mention of this?”
She slightly furrowed her brows, appearing somewhat reluctant. Yang Xia explained with a wry smile, “Even though Gan Ling is a doll, she is an independent ‘person.’ Now that her residency has been recognized, she’ll surely have more personal belongings and a need for privacy in the future. Eventually, one room won’t be enough for two people.”
“But I don’t want that… I want to be with Gan Ling. I sleep best when she’s there,” Yang Mo muttered, head bowed. She then turned to Gan Ling herself for an opinion. “By the way, what do you think, Gan Ling? You probably think it’s unnecessary too, right?”
To be honest, Gan Ling thought having her own room was a good thing, but she also wondered: Should I really accept this level of help? Since Yang Mo didn’t want to part ways, it might be better to reject the proposal. Carrying these thoughts, she finally chose to answer, “I also…”
However, before she could finish, Yang Xia interrupted. “Gan Ling, you don’t have to answer that. I know if you answer now, there will only be one response. But this matter is important for both you and Yang Mo; itโs better if you think about it carefully.” She spoke with a steady, serious voice. Gan Ling rarely saw her this grave, so she swallowed her original words and replied, “Understood. I’ll think it over.”
During Gan Ling’s silent contemplation, Yang Mo looked at Yang Xia with dejected eyes and asked, “Sister, do I really have to separate from Gan Ling?”
“That’s not what I mean.” Yang Xia shook her head. “Even for the closest of sisters, there are times when conflicts arise, don’t you think?” A small smile flickered across Yang Mo’s troubled face as she nodded slightly. Yang Xia breathed a sigh of relief and continued, “The same applies to you and Gan Ling. If such a time comes, wouldn’t it be awkward? Without space to process the conflict, problems that could have been solved might become unsolvable.”
Hearing this, Gan Ling understood. What Yang Xia really wanted to tell Yang Mo was that she couldn’t stay glued to her forever. Although it sounded a bit sad, Gan Ling actually agreed. Both she and Yang Mo were independent individuals; they couldn’t possibly hold the exact same view on everything.
While thinking this, she stole a glance at Yang Mo and found that she hadn’t caught on as quickly. Yang Mo maintained her earlier expression, head lowered as she responded to Yang Xia, “Maybe it’s just as you say…”
Yang Xia sighed, leaning down so she was eye-level with her. “Is there one thing you haven’t realized?”
“What is it…?” Yang Mo looked up, confused.
“You really didn’t get it.” Yang Xia rubbed her forehead as if nursing a headache and shook her head. “I said we should prepare a room for Gan Ling, but I didn’t say she’s forbidden from going to yours. As long as she agrees, anything is fine. Plus, you can visit Gan Ling’s room in the futureโdon’t you think that sounds more interesting than now?”
“Ah… thinking about it that way, it seems… really?” Yang Mo’s amber eyes instantly sparkled. She punched her palm with her fist, a look of realization dawning on her face.
“Then I have no objections. I cast a vote in favor!” Before her voice had even faded, she raised her right hand high, as if to show her vote was valid. Yang Xia turned and asked, “And you, Gan Ling? What do you think now?”
Under their eager gazes, Gan Ling also raised her hand and declared, “Two votes in favor.”
“Three votes in favor, then the new motion is passed.” Yang Xia was the last to join their ranks, then she remembered the most important thing. “Gan Ling, you haven’t said which room you’ve chosen as your bedroom. Is there one you fancy?” She pointed at the floor as she spoke.
“No problem, let’s make it this one.” Gan Ling gladly accepted the suggestion, as this place held a special significance for her.
“Good, it’s settled then.” Yang Xia nodded with satisfaction. Just as Yang Mo was rejoicing at the result and looking toward Gan Ling, Yang Xia’s tone suddenly shifted. She said coldly, “Settled as it may be, this is going to be quite a hassle. Thereโs a lot of work ahead. But before that, we need to finish the spring cleaning.”
“Eh…? Starting again already?” Yang Mo dejectedly pushed herself up from the old chair. To her groans, Yang Xia showed no mercy. “How much longer do you want to rest? Besides, most of the work was done by Gan Ling’s magic anyway. What do you have to complain about?”
Gan Ling chuckled inwardly while chiming in, “Exactly. After doing so much work, even I, the one most entitled to be tired, haven’t said anything.”
“Liar! Using magic isn’t tiring at all!” Though her words were reluctant, Yang Mo picked up the mop again and followed Gan Ling and Yang Xia to clean the remaining rooms.
Up until now, there was actually one room on the first floor they hadn’t entered to clean. Yang Mo and Yang Xia tacitly avoided mentioning it and went straight to the second floor. During her time living in this house, Gan Ling had realized that it was the room of their grandmother, who had passed away six months ago. She couldn’t help but imagine: Is it still kept exactly as it was? But she wasn’t curious enough to pry. In any case, she intended to maintain the same unspoken agreement as the sisters.
Once on the second floor, Yang Mo and Yang Xia were less particular about the rooms. There were two rooms Gan Ling had never entered. One was right next to Yang Mo’s, which she deduced was Yang Xia’s original bedroom. The other was at the far corner of the hallway, opposite the stairs; Gan Ling guessed it was the parents’ master bedroom.
They first stopped in front of the parents’ bedroom and began debating whether to go in.
“Forget it. I don’t know what the point of cleaning it would be.”
“Sister, I think we should just let Gan Ling use this bedroom.”
“That’s a bit much… No, actually, it might be worth considering.”
Hearing their conversation, Gan Ling quickly intervened. “What if your parents come back one day? Do you want me to be kicked out by them?” She suspected she might get kicked out regardless of which room she stayed in.
“Hmm… that person usually has no idea what they’re thinking, so we really do need to worry about that.” Yang Mo tapped her chin in agreement. She referred to the person as “that person,” so Gan Ling didn’t know if she meant her father or her mother. Toward her attitude, Yang Xia stole a wry smile at Gan Ling.
The three of them then moved to the door of Yang Xia’s bedroom. After thinking for a moment, Yang Xia told Gan Ling and Yang Mo, “My room doesn’t need cleaning either. I’ll clean it again before summer break anyway.”
So in the end, on the second floor, they only cleaned the hallway and Yang Mo’s bedroom. Perhaps because Yang Xia’s earlier words reminded her, Yang Mo checked the date on her phone after they finished. The screen she showed Gan Ling indicated that summer break was about two months away.
Unknowingly, nearly a month had passed since Gan Ling arrived in this world, and only less than two weeks remained before the start of the original story’s timeline.
