The next morning, at dawn.
Enis woke up on time according to the biological clock in her body. She looked at the small sliver of sunlight by the windowsill, her heart devoid of any ripples.
The bedroom she lived in had terrible lighting. Combined with its location in a secluded corner of the first floor, it had been used as a warehouse for a period of time.
Now, it was her own bedroom.
*“Yawn…”*
She let out a yawn. Just like in her previous life, she folded her quilt and tidied her bed alone. After putting on the cold dress hanging on the wall, she sat at her desk and picked up the Magic Book she had been halfway through to read.
This was one of the few things she could do to pass the time during her house arrest.
One hour later, she placed her bookmark, stood up, and stretched.
‘It’s about time.’
According to Sherry’s daily routine, sunlight would be spilling over her bed at this time. She would wake up during the wake-up service provided by her personal maid, who would then personally dress her in clothes that had been specially warmed.
It was a world of difference from her own life.
But at that moment, the sound of knocking came from the door.
“Miss Enis, breakfast is ready.”
Enis was a little surprised because the owner of this voice was Sherry’s personal maid, Sybil.
At this time, she should have been in a sun-filled bedroom, standing beside the young lady she served with warm clothes in hand, waking her up thoughtfully.
Enis pulled open the old wooden door, which had no lock. Standing at the door was a maid with short, deep purple hair and regular features. She carried a cold aura.
It was indeed her.
The maid bowed respectfully to Enis. “Miss Sherry asked me to take you to the dining room first.”
It seemed Sherry knew very well that the dining room was outside Enis’s range of activity, so she had specially sent the maid to lead the way.
“I see. Lead the way,” Enis said.
Enis followed behind the maid toward the dining room. As they passed through the main hall, two guards in light armor were standing at the gate. When she appeared, the gazes of those two clearly landed on her for a moment.
If not for the maid, Sybil, leading the way, they would have likely stepped forward to stop her by now.
There was something else that caught her attention more: just as the maid stood up after bowing to her, her gaze had flickered toward the inside of the room for a split second.
That look was very unnatural, as if she were looking for something in the room.
‘Other than the medicine cabinet, what else could it be?’
“Sister Enis!”
Sherry’s cheerful voice interrupted her thoughts. In a seat not far away, a silver-white young girl was waving and smiling at her, looking as beautiful as a Butterfly Spirit dancing in the forest.
Looking at this beautiful little sister, Enis only felt it was a pity. ‘How can such a pretty girl, who even went out of her way to call me “Sister” so sweetly, be so ruthless and black-hearted?’
For example, this meal was likely a Hongmen Banquet. Sherry was probably calculating something in her heart.
“Sister Enis! I prepared a gift for you!”
Sherry jumped down from her large, cushioned chair. She picked up a book that had been placed on the table beforehand and ran to Enis’s side while hugging it. “Here!”
Enis took it and realized it was a Magic Book.
“Thank you.”
She didn’t stand on ceremony with the girl. When it came to Magic Books she could get her hands on, her attitude was always to accept them all. There were two things she could never have too much of: gold coins and knowledge.
Collecting more magic to become stronger was also a key part of breaking her cage.
However, excessive kindness often hid a foul motive. Thinking of the gift and the maid’s look into her room earlier, Enis felt it was highly likely that this master and servant pair were plotting against her.
Hugging the Magic Book, Enis walked toward the chair opposite Sherry, but Sherry suddenly grabbed her sleeve!
“Sit with me.”
The petite girl blinked her ice-blue eyes with a pitiful expression.
Seeing that Enis remained unmoved, she even pouted her lips with an unhappy look. *“Mmm…”*
If it were anyone else, they might not have been able to handle a white-haired little girl acting spoiled toward them. Unfortunately, this white furball’s name was Sherry, and she was a standard “white-on-the-outside, black-on-the-inside” type.
Enis had only three attitudes toward her: beware, beware, and beware.
‘Sitting with her would be equivalent to exposing my back to the maid. What if that Necklace happened to be in the maid’s hands?’
“It’ll be too crowded if we sit together. I’ll just sit across from you,” Enis said.
With that, she ignored Sherry’s puffed-up pufferfish face and directly pulled out the opposite chair to sit down. Besides not wanting to leave her back to the maid, she had another goal—to keep a close eye on her and not give her a chance to slip away.
Though she was an adopted thug, her external status was still that of a “young lady” who possessed a family name. A mere maid wouldn’t dare to be too out of line in front of her.
The kitchen staff brought out breakfast. Sherry stopped talking, and Enis silently ate the food on her plate.
Soft, fragrant fried eggs, perfectly toasted buttered bread, bacon fried until slightly charred, and milk whose creamy scent filled her mouth with every sip…
It was very fresh and delicious.
Enis couldn’t help but feel a bit emotional. In her previous life, no matter how destitute she was, she could always have a hot breakfast. Now, this had become a delicacy that only nobles could enjoy.
While enjoying her breakfast, her gaze remained fixed on the maid behind Sherry.
When their eyes met, the maid was the first to look away by bowing. She didn’t show any abnormality during the meal and stood in place without moving.
‘Since she didn’t act now, it means Sherry will definitely create a more suitable opportunity for her later.’
After finishing breakfast, Sherry jumped off her chair and skipped over, looking like a high-energy little girl.
“Sister, was breakfast to your liking?”
Enis feigned sisterly affection on the surface. “It was delicious. Thank you for the treat, Sister. If there’s nothing else, I’ll head back to my room first.”
“Wait a minute!”
Just as Enis took her first step to leave, Sherry grabbed her sleeve again. “Sister, come shopping with me today!”
Enis raised an eyebrow. As expected, this was the real reason she had been invited to breakfast.
For Enis, who was under house arrest, going out was quite difficult. This was a rare opportunity, and it tempted her greatly.
However, if she chose to go out, the maid would certainly sneak into her lockless bedroom to steal something.
‘Should I agree? It’s a difficult choice.’
