The Superintendent Department, the Witch Empire’s law enforcement agency, was much like Earth’s police stations.
Su Ling never imagined she would one day be targeted by people from the Superintendent Department.
The Original above, she was just a Fuli Ji. At most, she wanted to squeeze some money out of Ji Lingyuan.
What exactly had she done?
Uh, okay, she actually might have violated the Witch Empire’s Public Security Administration Law.
After all, she was a Fuli Ji, and that was explicitly prohibited by law.
However, Su Ling felt extremely uneasy right now.
That officer named Shao Hua had mentioned something about her being related to the Zerg.
This was a huge deal.
By now, Su Ling had been brought to the Superintendent Department and was sitting in a dim room.
Her thoughts were in disarray.
She knew the Superintendent Department wouldn’t shoot without a target, so they must have found something.
Yet, no matter how much she thought about it, she couldn’t imagine what connection she could possibly have with the Zerg.
Fortunately, she did not have to wait for very long.
The door opened, and a figure entered, sitting down in front of Su Ling. It was Shao Hua, the one who had brought her in.
“Su Ling, 22 years old, resides on Pancheng Street in the Lower City, history of mental illness.”
Shao Hua flipped through the documents in her hand, accurately stating Su Ling’s background.
Su Ling’s feet shifted uneasily under the table.
“Um, is there some kind of mistake? I don’t even know what the Zerg are. How could I be related to them?”
“Relax. My point is that while you are related to the Zerg, the connection isn’t significant.”
Seeing Su Ling’s tension, Shao Hua’s tone softened significantly.
“At 11:03 PM last night, Dalian, the largest shareholder of Shao Nian You, was found dead in his office. Based on the traces left at the scene, our preliminary assessment is that it was the work of the Zerg.”
Shao Nian You…
Su Ling nodded blankly.
Her impression of Shao Nian You wasn’t good. Yesterday morning, their people had even tried to force her to join.
“You don’t need to be too nervous. We’ve already confirmed that you don’t have much to do with this matter. The main issue lies with your mother, Bai Wei.”
Hearing that this matter actually involved her mother, who had been missing for a year, Su Ling immediately perked up.
“My mother has been missing for a year. I don’t know where she is either.”
Almost all of her family’s debts had been incurred by her mother, Bai Wei, so Su Ling’s tone held a hint of resentment.
“I know that. But did you know that your mother was once a soldier in the Third Army of the Expeditionary Force?”
Shao Hua stared fixedly at Su Ling’s small face, trying to catch any sign of a flaw.
Unfortunately, Su Ling looked completely lost.
“What Expeditionary Force?”
“The Expeditionary Force of the Fourth Universe. The Witch Empire is currently at war with the Zerg in the Fourth Universe, and the Expeditionary Force is the vanguard unit on the front lines.”
Finding no abnormalities, Shao Hua formed a few guesses in her mind.
“Your mother was once the captain of the Ornis Squad of the Third Army. However, 22 years ago, she suddenly defected and hasn’t been heard from since.”
What the hell?
Su Ling was shocked. Her mother was a soldier? And a deserter?
“Officer, she’s been missing for a year. We didn’t know about any of this. I mean, we really had no idea she was a deserter.”
Su Ling immediately cut ties with Bai Wei.
She was joking.
No matter how ignorant she was, she knew that desertion was a capital offense.
Her family was already suffocating under their debts.
If they were tied to a deserter on top of that, she couldn’t even imagine how miserable their fate would be.
Shao Hua seemed somewhat surprised by how decisively Su Ling distanced herself, but she quickly understood why.
Once someone was associated with desertion, they would be lucky to escape with their life.
“Don’t worry. Your mother is the deserter. You and your sister only appeared after her defection. We can distinguish between the two.”
Su Ling breathed a sigh of relief.
Her family had finally started to see some improvement; they really couldn’t afford any more trouble.
“Then, what does she have to do with the Zerg?”
Su Ling asked, still confused.
Even if Bai Wei was a deserter, how did the Zerg get involved?
“According to our investigation, when your mother defected 22 years ago, she brought a Zerg egg with her to the First Universe. We suspect that the Zerg which appeared in the Lower City is the one your mother brought back 22 years ago.”
Su Ling couldn’t hold back any longer.
No, was that woman insane?
Of all the things she could bring, she brought a bug?
Su Ling’s resentment toward Bai Wei deepened.
Missing for a year, a deserter, and now suspected of bringing a Zerg to the Lower City—what kind of awful person was she?
“However, we actually have another theory.”
Shao Hua stared at Su Ling, her eyes flashing with a hint of scrutiny.
“The Tyranid Swarm has the ability to devour genes. In the one thousand years the Witches have been at war with them, the Zerg have devoured many Witch genes. Some of the Zerg’s Royal Guards can even use Mimicry to copy the abilities of Witches.”
Su Ling reacted quickly, immediately grasping Shao Hua’s meaning.
She could no longer sit still and stood up abruptly.
“Officer, I’m not a bug! I can confirm that 100%!”
Shao Hua’s implication was nothing less than the idea that the egg had been hatched by Bai Wei and raised as her daughter.
“Then what about your sister?”
“Miao Miao isn’t one!”
Su Ling suddenly roared.
Her pink cherry blossom eyes were bloodshot, and her face was filled with madness.
Shao Hua simply looked at her calmly, then lowered her head to write something in her notebook.
“Calm down. As I said, it is just a theory.”
“I was tutoring a classmate at her house last night. If you don’t believe me, you can ask her. And after I went home, Miao Miao was with me the whole time. We both have solid alibis.”
Su Ling forced herself to calm down.
She sat back down, cradling her forehead with an expression of exhaustion.
The worst-case scenario had happened.
They were under suspicion.
Once the seeds of doubt were sown, uprooting them would be nearly impossible.
“Miss Su Ling, please calm down. To tell you the truth, we don’t really suspect your sister. We suspect you.”
This sudden turn of events caught Su Ling completely off guard.
“The defection happened 22 years ago, and you just happen to be 22 years old.
Your sister is only 13, so the timeline doesn’t fit her at all.”
Shao Hua suddenly leaned in close, watching Su Ling’s panicked eyes.
The corners of her mouth curled up slightly.
“Miss Su Ling, are you sure you really aren’t a Zerg?”
The faint, elegant scent of bamboo leaves from Shao Hua’s body caused Su Ling to lose her composure.
How could she be a bug?
‘Even though I’m a transmigrator, I’ve examined this body countless times over the past month.
It’s a perfectly beautiful girl. How could it be a bug?’
“I mentioned that the Zerg have the ability to mimic others. I also forgot to mention one point: while the Zerg mimic a form, their psyche also undergoes Mimicry. This manifests outwardly as a complete change in personality.”
Shao Hua had finally revealed her cards.
She looked at Su Ling, who was now spiraling into self-doubt, and the corners of her mouth rose uncontrollably.
“Miss Su Ling, your age matches, and the phenomenon of Schizophrenia after Mimicry matches as well. Have you ever considered that you really are a Zerg, and your current self-perception is just the result of a new Mimicry?”
