After eating, they went back upstairs.
Lan Hui gave the big bed to Peng Kai. “Kai-ge, you sleep on the bed and get some rest. I slept well last night, so I’m not sleepy. I’ll sit on the sofa and play games.”
Peng Kai looked at her hesitantly. “Are you really rested? You went to bed late too.”
“I’m fine.” Lan Hui smiled brightly.
Peng Kai didn’t refuse anymore. He was indeed very tired. “I’ll set an alarm for 11:30 a.m.”
“We have to check out before noon. I’m afraid we’ll be late if we oversleep.”
“All right.” Lan Hui didn’t object; she was afraid of sleeping through the time as well.
Peng Kai lay down and quickly fell asleep.
Lan Hui played games on the sofa for an hour, then grew sleepy, grabbed Peng Kai’s big jacket, and curled up, falling asleep deeply.
Peng Kai woke at eleven. After three hours of extra sleep, he naturally awoke refreshed.
He saw the girl curled up on the sofa, covered tightly with his black jacket, only her fair and delicate face visible.
Her black hair spread out on the sofa like silk, adding a gentle and serene charm.
Peng Kai felt deeply moved, a warm current flowing through his body.
The girl gave up the bed to let him rest but ended up sleeping on the sofa herself!
Such a good girl was truly his blessing. He wondered how many good deeds he had done in a past life to deserve her.
He carefully got out of bed and walked to the sofa to pick her up, intending to carry her to bed.
Lan Hui’s sleep was light; almost immediately, she opened her eyes as he lifted her.
Her hands instinctively wrapped around his neck, and in a soft voice, she asked, “Kai-ge, what time is it?”
“It’s already eleven.” Peng Kai said, “Sorry, I just wanted to carry you to bed to sleep but ended up waking you.”
Lan Hui smiled brightly. “It’s okay. My sleep is naturally light. We have an hour left before check-out. Let’s pack up and go downstairs to find some lunch, then head to the airport.”
Peng Kai smiled and nodded, gently putting her back on the sofa. “I’ll follow whatever Fu Fu says.”
They had already washed up after breakfast. Now they packed quickly; Lan Hui washed her face and applied light makeup before heading downstairs.
Peng Kai checked out, and the two walked out of the building. The rain had grown heavier.
Lan Hui suggested, “Kai-ge, why don’t we just go straight to the airport? We can grab something to eat on the plane. It’s such heavy rain; finding a restaurant would be a hassle.”
Peng Kai agreed. “Okay, I’ll call a car now.”
“Good.”
They arrived at the rented apartment after six in the evening, quickly boiled some dumplings, then each went to their own room to sleep.
Neither had slept well the previous night, and after traveling all day, they were exhausted, with no energy to think about anything else.
***
The next day, Lan Hui went to work at the shop.
Peng Kai went to the auto repair shop as well.
It was only the fourth day of the lunar new year; everyone was still celebrating back home, and business was slow—almost no customers.
Even the occasional customers were local people coming just to wash their cars.
Peng Kai was cleaning the shop when a black Rolls-Royce drove in.
His eyelids twitched; he could hardly believe it.
Such a luxury car would normally only be serviced at a 4S dealership—how could it come to his small shop?
Before he could ponder, the car smoothly stopped at his door, and three people got out.
Two men and one woman.
They were dressed elegantly, exuding an air of wealth and high status—clearly people of considerable means.
Peng Kai stepped forward a couple of steps and greeted, “Hello. Are you here for a car wash or repair?”
The two men and the woman didn’t answer him. Instead, they stared intently, sizing him up.
Peng Kai could almost see the joy and trembling in their eyes.
Especially the middle-aged woman; her eyes were red-rimmed as if about to cry.
Zhao Xinhua, wearing a gray suit, was the first to speak, excitedly addressing the middle-aged man beside him: “Old Chen, this kid looks exactly like you when you were young!”
Chen Chujiang was also very moved. He stepped forward a few steps and gently asked Peng Kai, “Son, what’s your name? How old are you?”
Peng Kai was confused by the question but felt something indescribable from the middle-aged man, so he answered honestly: “My name is Peng Kai. I’m twenty-seven.”
The middle-aged woman asked, “Son, how many people are in your family?”
Peng Kai lowered his eyes and replied, “I’m an orphan.”
The woman, Xue Fen, burst into tears immediately.
Chen Chujiang quickly comforted her, “Xue Fen, don’t cry. Let’s take the boy to the hospital for a DNA test first, then confirm.”
Xue Fen nodded in agreement.
Peng Kai caught on. This middle-aged couple had come to acknowledge kinship.
His heart stirred. Over the years, he had fantasized about this moment and even tried to find his parents last year but found no leads.
Zhao Xinhua noticed the couple’s agitation and softened his words to Peng Kai, “Young man, my friends lost their child over twenty years ago and have never given up searching.”
“Before the New Year, I went fishing and happened to find a little car repair card. The photo on the card looks exactly like my friend when he was young.”
“I came to your shop looking for you but found it closed because you were probably home for the holiday.”
“I then asked the Express Delivery Station Owner next door to keep an eye out. You just reopened today, so we hurried over.”
Peng Kai finally understood. This middle-aged couple’s visit was thanks to Fu Fu.
She had taken five hundred of the little cards printed before and had taken them immediately.
Since the face on the card was so large, Peng Kai thought it was ugly and hadn’t cared much about whether she distributed them.
Unexpectedly, it led to this surprising outcome.
Peng Kai’s heart was full of emotion.
Xue Fen looked at Peng Kai and said, “Son, are you willing to go with us to the hospital for a DNA test?”
Chen Chujiang also spoke, “Regardless of the result, we want to compensate you with ten thousand yuan for your time today.”
Zhao Xinhua added, “Young man, it’s not easy for my friends to have searched for their child for over twenty years. Will you just accompany them to the hospital?”
Peng Kai nodded. “I can go with you, but I want to bring someone with me.”
Xue Fen and Chen Chujiang had no objections. “Of course, no problem.”
“Then give me the hospital address. I’ll call my girlfriend right now.” Peng Kai pretended to take out his phone.
Chen Chujiang said, “We’ll do the test at First People’s Hospital. I have some connections with the director there. The results should come out the same day.”
“All right. We’ll meet at the hospital entrance.”
After Peng Kai finished speaking, the call connected.
Lan Hui wasn’t busy today and was free, so she answered immediately.
“Kai-ge, aren’t you busy? You still have time to call me?”
Her sweet voice came from the other end, making Peng Kai’s expression soften. “Can you come with me to First People’s Hospital?” He explained everything about the couple’s search for their son.
Lan Hui was immediately excited. Her little cards had finally worked.
“Kai-ge, I’ll ask for leave right now. Wait for me.”
His girlfriend’s unconditional support warmed Peng Kai’s heart. “Okay, I’ll come pick you up in five minutes.”
“Drive safely.” Lan Hui hung up and immediately called the store manager to request leave.
The manager was still celebrating the New Year back home and hadn’t returned to S City yet, so all work was done via phone.
He was easy to talk to and quickly approved her leave.
Peng Kai arrived quickly; what should have been a five-minute trip took him only four.
Lan Hui ran up to the car. “Kai-ge, let’s go.”
Peng Kai nodded, and the car set off swiftly toward First People’s Hospital.
Twenty minutes later, the car pulled into the hospital parking lot. Lan Hui held Peng Kai’s hand and felt it was damp with sweat.
He must be very nervous.
“Kai-ge, I’ll be with you all the way.”
Peng Kai gently patted her hand.
“Fu Fu, thank you. Over the years, I’ve always dreamed of being found by my parents. The older I get, the less hope I had. I thought I didn’t care anymore, but now that the day is here, my whole body is trembling.”
Only in front of his girlfriend could Peng Kai reveal his vulnerability.
Lan Hui understood his feelings and tried to distract him. “Kai-ge, if you suddenly became a rich young master, what would you want to do?”
Peng Kai thought for a moment, then earnestly said, “I want to marry you.” No matter what his status was, his greatest wish was to marry her.
Lan Hui was stunned. She hadn’t expected that marrying her would be his first wish. “Rich people usually kick out their first wives and find younger, prettier girls from better families. You’re quite unique.”
“You’re the best girl in the world. No one can be better than you.”
Peng Kai said without hesitation, then added, “But we haven’t done the DNA test yet, so it’s too early to talk about this.”
Still, for some reason, he felt very certain in his heart that he was the son of the middle-aged couple.
Lan Hui was so pleased she smiled with crescent eyes.
Peng Kai, who had been tense, relaxed significantly at her smile.
They left the parking lot and saw Chen Chujiang and the others waiting anxiously at the emergency entrance.
Lan Hui observed them closely—their rich attire and features bore some resemblance to Peng Kai. Even without a DNA test, one could tell they were family.
The three were ecstatic to see Peng Kai with his girlfriend.
Xue Fen looked over Lan Hui as if inspecting a future daughter-in-law.
Lan Hui felt a little awkward but greeted politely, “Hello, Auntie, hello, Uncles.”
Chen Chujiang nodded, his eyes filled with emotion as he looked at Peng Kai. “Son, let’s go inside. I’ve contacted the director; he’s waiting for us on the second floor.”
“Okay.” Peng Kai nodded.
Lan Hui noticed Peng Kai’s hands sweating again and gently patted his hand, silently comforting him.
They all went upstairs, where the director personally greeted them.
Peng Kai cooperated fully, filling out forms, having photos taken, providing blood samples, and then waited quietly for the results.
The director said, “The paternity test has been expedited and should be ready in about three hours. Would you like to wait here or go home?”
Chen Chujiang and Xue Fen said immediately, “We’ll wait here.”
Peng Kai also said, “My shop is fine. I’ll wait here too.”
Lan Hui naturally stayed by Peng Kai’s side the entire time.
***
Around two in the afternoon, the paternity test report came out.
Peng Kai was extremely nervous.
Chen Chujiang and Xue Fen were no better. Trembling, they opened the report and saw it indicated a 99.9% probability of father-son relationship.
The couple hugged Peng Kai and wept aloud.
“Son, we’ve finally found you.”
“You’ve suffered all these years.”
Even Peng Kai, a tough man, couldn’t hold back tears in such a moment.
They hugged for over ten minutes before separating.
Xue Fen immediately said, “Son, come home with us today. You’ll live there from now on.”
Chen Chujiang nodded, “Your mother is right. We’ll make it up to you properly.”
Peng Kai glanced at his quietly standing girlfriend. “Dad, Mom, I won’t live with you. I’m fine where I am now. The shop is close, and it’s convenient.”
Chen Chujiang disagreed. “You’re my son. You’ll take over Chen Group eventually. Let someone else manage the small shop. I’ll arrange for you to start at the bottom of Chen Group.”
Xue Fen nodded. “Your father is right. You’re our only son. Chen Group will be yours one day. Just appoint a manager for your shop.”
Peng Kai said, “Mom, Dad, I can accept changing jobs, but I won’t change where I live. That’s my bottom line. I hope you understand.”
Having finally found his parents, Peng Kai cherished them greatly. They had searched for him for decades, and he was willing to listen and inherit their business.
But Yue Fu—that was his line. He wanted to follow his own heart.
Chen Chujiang was experienced and understood his son’s thoughts. It wasn’t that he didn’t want Peng Kai to move; he just couldn’t bear to separate the couple.
“Son, if you don’t want to live with us, that’s fine. I can get you a big flat near our villa. You can come visit us on weekends for gatherings.”
He then looked at Lan Hui. The girl was pretty with clear, bright eyes—a nice young lady.
“You’re Yue Fu, right? Since Xiao Kai is about to start a new job, would you like to work at Chen Group too? It’ll be good for both of you to look out for each other.”
