The book recorded that magic mainly falls into two categories: offensive and defensive spells.
The most typical form of attack is simply condensing Magic Power and firing it directly, using kinetic energy and the heat from friction to attack. Defensive techniques involve releasing Magic Power outward, using solidified Magic Power to counter the enemy’s assaults. Basically, every magician can do this.
But being able to do it is one thing; how well you do it is another.
Some magicians can manipulate Magic Power with astonishing skill, while others are still troubled by how to control it at all. So, just by looking at how these two techniques are applied, you can generally gauge a magician’s true strength.
Roland tried guiding the Magic Power inside her body, and to her surprise, it went extremely smoothly. She stretched out her finger, and a white laser resembling an arc of electricity shot from her fingertip, leaving a charred black mark on the wall where it hit.
“Hey, this is pretty fun.”
She shot out another, but this time it landed on the Curtain, nearly setting it on fire. Startled, she hurriedly drew her finger back, afraid of actually burning down the Bedroom.
After trying out attacks, it was time to test her defenses.
With another manipulation of her Magic Power, this time Roland didn’t condense it at her fingertip, but let it spill out directly from the surface of her skin.
As long as the Magic Power only briefly left her body and didn’t go too far, it still obeyed her command. The originally formless, intangible Magic Power materialized, taking on visible physical properties. It was like she’d conjured a wall of air out of nothing, except the wall wasn’t entirely transparent—its edges had a pale blue hue, and overall it looked like an irregular shape.
She also discovered that she could change the shape of this Magic Power barrier at will—triangle, quadrilateral, octagon, even a circle. But every change consumed Magic Power, and the barriers didn’t last long. After just a few seconds, they’d automatically dissipate.
Excitement was written all over her face. Even though it was only a minor achievement, to Roland it meant she’d truly crossed the threshold into being a magician. As long as she kept studying, she would one day grow strong.
But after practicing, her body felt as if it had been hollowed out. She had just eaten lunch, yet she felt an unprecedented sense of hunger.
“Could it be because I ran out of Magic Power?” Roland realized this was probably the issue.
She had only trained for a little while and already used up all her Magic Power. If she actually got into a fight, it would be a disaster—a girl magician with no strength would be captured by the enemy, and everyone could guess what her fate would be.
“No, I have to solve this problem.”
Suddenly, she remembered that the System might have a function for this. She quickly summoned the panel: “System, can Mother’s Love Value replenish Magic Power?”
【Host report: 1 Mother’s Love Value can restore 10 Magic Power.】
“Magic Power can be quantified?”
【Please check the Personal Panel for details.】
The System panel changed at once, and by the time Roland reacted, the information displayed was already different.
【Roland·Mon·Ackerman】
【Basic Attributes: Strength 0.9, Agility 1, Constitution 1, Spirit 1.5, Charisma 2, Inspiration 13】
【Magic Power: 1/10 (Magic Power depletion results in a weakened state)】
【Blessing: None】
【Daughter: Mia (view detailed Attributes)】
【Mother’s Love Value: 5】
“What is this Inspiration? Why is this Attribute so high?”
【Inspiration refers to the ability to sense all supernatural beings, including but not limited to deities, subordinate gods, astral creatures, and transcendent entities. The higher the Inspiration, the greater the chance of attracting their attention.】
“Then if my Inspiration is so high, won’t I become a delicacy for all kinds of gods?”
【That’s right, darling. Maybe there’s a deity watching you right now.】
“The problem is, I didn’t even know I had this, so why is my Attribute so high?”
【Of course, that’s because… Actually, I don’t know either. Ehehe.】
Infuriated, Roland swatted at the System through the air, but because it had no physical form, her slap missed completely.
There was nothing she could do but take things one step at a time.
“Fill my Magic Power to full.”
With Magic Power converted from Mother’s Love Value, Roland could keep practicing magic. But now she didn’t dare to waste Magic Power so recklessly. Instead, she started using it with careful calculations.
After practicing for about an hour, both her Mother’s Love Value and Magic Power were completely depleted. Exhausted, Roland collapsed onto the bed, her body limp like a slime.
“So tired.”
After so much effort, the result was that Roland learned her first spell—the Fireball Spell.
Yep, the classic low-level spell you see in every RPG.
Don’t think she’s lame for only mastering this. Reality isn’t a game; you can’t just use skill points to instantly master a spell. You have to understand and experiment sincerely before you might succeed, and then practice repeatedly to truly master it.
She figured that for a complete novice, learning Fireball Spell in an hour was already impressive.
Casting Fireball Spell once cost about 5 Magic Power. If she maxed out her Mother’s Love Value every day, she could cast Fireball Spell twenty-two times. As for the exact power… that was another question.
Just as Roland closed her eyes, ready to nap for a bit, the door to the Bedroom suddenly opened. Looking up, she saw Mia. Mia had both hands behind her back, a mysterious smile on her face, and a bit of dirt and grass in her hair.
Roland watched as Mia came to her bedside and pulled out what she’d hidden behind her. It was a Flower Crown, woven from grass roots and chrysanthemums. It glowed with a golden luster, just like her hair.
On top of the Flower Crown was a sheet of paper, with a red Apple drawn on it. In the middle of the Apple, “Gift” was written in big, bold letters.
“This is for me?” Roland was pleasantly surprised. The feeling was no less than her boss suddenly announcing a year-end bonus at the end of the year—enough to keep her happy for days.
Mia nodded vigorously.
Roland started to reach out for the Flower Crown, but suddenly thought of something and paused with her hand in midair.
“How about you put it on for me?” she said, lowering her head and leaning forward, waiting for Mia to place the Flower Crown on her.
Mia extended her hand, still showing signs of wear from picking flowers, and gently placed the Flower Crown on Roland’s head. The size was just right.
Roland picked up the Mirror from the bedside and looked. “It’s beautiful. Why did you suddenly want to give me this?”
Perhaps expecting the question, Mia pulled out a second sheet of paper from under the first. On it was written: “I wanted to thank Mama for giving me the Apple.”
“Just because of that?”
Mia nodded affirmatively.
“I really like this Gift,” Roland said with a smile, but then her expression became a little downcast. As she tidied the stray grass from her daughter’s head, she muttered to herself, “But what I’ve given in return doesn’t compare at all. You went to all this trouble to make me a Gift, and all I gave you was an ordinary Apple.”
Once the grass was cleaned off, Mia was back to looking neat and tidy.
“In that case, I’ll prepare a Gift for you next time too.”
