Chapter 27: The Attack

The vehicle sped along the dirt and stone road, kicking up a cloud of dust behind it.

The scenery on both sides rushed past, and Bai Nian kept watching the situation outside.

The ominous premonition in her heart grew stronger.

Suddenly, her gaze pierced through the thick surrounding jungle and caught several figures hiding in the back.

“Team Leader, danger!”

Bai Nian shouted instinctively, warning everyone.

The very next second, a spiked barricade shot up from the earth right in front of the vehicle.

Zhang Kun reacted just as quickly, slamming on the brakes and jerking the steering wheel.

The rear wheels kicked up mud and sand, perfectly drifting the vehicle.

At the same time, a white light glowed from Shi Gao’s hand, and in an instant, the entire vehicle turned completely transparent, vanishing from the road.

A few professionals emerged from the jungle behind and immediately looked bewildered.

The leader stared forward with a grave expression, but instead of seeing tire tracks heading away, he saw them speeding straight toward them.

“Get dow—”

He had just started to shout when he felt something pierce his chest.

A jet of blood spurted out, and his body slammed heavily to the ground.

The others didn’t fare any better; they couldn’t see where the enemy was, nor did they even know what was attacking them.

Only a set of tire tracks circled on the ground, moving around them.

As each member’s chest burst open, they fell into pools of blood before they could even resist.

One person locked his gaze on the shifting tire marks.

A red glow flashed in his hand, and suddenly a device like a bomb appeared.

Just as he was about to flip the switch, a burly man in black muscles appeared right in front of him.

Zhang Kun wielded an enormous broadsword, swung it with both hands, and slammed the flat of the blade into the man’s chest.

With a resounding crack, bones shattered under the force, and the man was sent flying, spitting blood midair.

“Tell me where your base is!”

Zhang Kun, temper flaring, pressed the massive blade to the last survivor and threatened him.

By now, all the others had been dealt with.

This severely wounded member was the only one Zhang Kun intentionally left alive.

The vehicle stopped at the roadside, and the three got out one after another.

Bai Nian was still in a bit of a daze; she hadn’t expected their teamwork to be this seamless.

Clearly, this wasn’t their first time handling such an ambush.

The air was thick with the stench of blood, mixed with the smell of dust.

The scene around them was drenched in gore, corpses and blood everywhere.

Bai Nian felt nauseous at the sight.

It was her first time seeing dead bodies, and the physical reaction was overwhelming.

Li Qian said with a faint smile, swaying her hips.

Zhang Kun kicked the wounded man, cursing under his breath.

Furious, he decided to pay them back in kind and loot these wildlanders right back.

The man on the ground coughed blood and tried to mumble something, slurring his words.

“You’re not wrong, I am!”

Zhang Kun snapped, giving him another kick.

“Hurry up and talk!”

“Team Leader, let me.”

Bai Nian spoke up.

“You know how to interrogate?”

Zhang Kun looked back, puzzled.

“Dummy, just hypnotize him and he’ll spill everything, right?”

Li Qian chimed in.

“Oh, right.”

Zhang Kun scratched his head and moved aside.

Bai Nian stepped forward and looked at the blood-covered man, keenly noticing the odd look in his eyes when he saw her.

She couldn’t be bothered to think further, simply crouched down next to him, looking small.

With a crisp snap, the sound of fingers snapping echoed out, and the man instantly fell into a deep sleep.

At that moment, Bai Nian also closed her eyes.

She entered his Dreamland.

Inside a dim room, several figures were gathered.

Standing before them was a man whose face was impossible to discern.

“A job today. The client is generous—offered a million, just wants it clean.”

The man spoke coldly.

Bai Nian was taken aback.

These weren’t the wildlanders Li Qian mentioned?

The people in the room looked excited when they heard the price.

The scene shifted—it was nighttime.

They were in a private room at a massage parlor, and the leader appeared to be their Team Leader.

“The intel’s confirmed. The target joined the Hunter Squad, and they’re out in the wild right now.”

“The wild? That’s the perfect chance. No need to worry about the Nine Provinces’ people from the Celestial Empire.”

“What about the Hunter Squad? If they’re Sigil Professionals, we won’t stand a chance.”

“Are you stupid? We’re only here for the target. When the time comes, just stop them and explain.”

The Dreamland shattered, and Bai Nian seemed to understand everything.

First, these weren’t wildlanders—they came to the wilderness to kill someone, and the only newcomer to the Hunter Squad was her.

So they were after her.

Zhang Kun had just gotten a Calamity Core and was on edge, mistaking them for robbing wildlanders.

Instead of fleeing, he’d chosen to fight head-on.

Everyone acted decisively and in perfect sync, never giving the other side a chance to explain.

So it was all a misunderstanding.

No wonder the man kept saying it was a mistake—she thought he was apologizing…

As for who wanted her dead, Bai Nian could guess with her toes.

She opened her eyes and stood up, and the other three immediately turned their attention toward her.

“So, where’s their base? Let’s go pay them back!”

Zhang Kun pressed impatiently, unable to wait.

“They’re not wildlanders. They’re members of an Assassin Organization from the city.”

Bai Nian explained apologetically, then lowered her head.

“Sorry for dragging you all into this. They must have come to kill me.”

A hint of surprise flashed in the eyes of the three, all realizing Bai Nian’s background was not as simple as it seemed.

“What are you apologizing for? If it’s your business, it’s mine too!”

Zhang Kun patted his chest reassuringly.

“Team Leader will protect you.”

“Don’t worry, Bai Nian. It’s just a small-time group, super weak. Once you officially join the Hunter Guild, they won’t dare touch you again.”

Li Qian added, her tone light.

She wore a carefree smile, showing no concern for these people at all.

Just then, Shi Gao suddenly handed over his phone.

“Look at this!”
