So, the seven spells I just introduced are the representative First-Tier Magic of each of the seven elements. You must memorize these incantations, as well as the corresponding magic circuits used when casting the spells.
Collette pointed at the blackboard, which had been carried out onto the schoolyard, with her staff, looking very serious. The board was now covered in diagrams of magic circuitsโexactly the circuits used for the First-Tier Magic of all seven elements.
Because Collette had previously displayed such overwhelming strength, the students trusted her deeply. Everyone listened intently, even though she had seemed a bit unreliable at first. Now, however, that impression had simply become part of her charm.
“Although, in the end, you only need to master one of these spells, having a solid grasp of all the basics will only benefit youโit wonโt hurt at all. So, do your best! By the way, this is also the main objective for this academic year. As long as you can master at least one spell by the end of the year, youโll pass magic class for this year!”
Collette smiled brightly as she delivered news that left most students groaning in pain.
“Eh? Thereโs a test?”
“Ugh! I hate testsโฆ”
“Collette-sensei, canโt we just not have a test?”
Complaints began to rise up from all around.
“Nope~ Even if you beg me, itโs impossible, because this is an order from above!”
“Ah, how can this beโฆ”
Colletteโs words struck another blow to the group.
“Collette-sensei,” someone raised their hand to ask, “since we only need to master one spell, is there any way for us to directly find out which element weโre compatible with? Wouldnโt that save us a lot of time?”
“Right! Thereโs that method, too!” I really wanted to tell you all, there actually is a way to test itโ
Everyone couldnโt help but look at Collette.
“Hmm. Testing a personโs elemental compatibility and even their natural talentโฆ”
Collette hesitated in her reply.
“Really? There is a way after all!”
The classโs mood immediately brightened with hope.
But before anyone could get excited, Collette splashed them with cold water.
“However, unfortunately, that method canโt be widely used.”
“Eh? Why not? If thereโs a way, why canโt we use it?”
Disappointment and confusion mixed among the students.
Collette explained, “Mainly, the Magical Devices that can detect oneโs talent are all artifacts excavated from special ancient ruins. Not only are these devices rare, theyโre extremely valuable, and are usually kept by the Royal Family in the Capital. Unless itโs truly necessary, itโs impossible to take them out. Besides, the Magical Devices are based on Ancient Magic Technology thatโs been lostโcurrent technology canโt reproduce them at all. So, thereโs no way to spread this kind of method.”
“AhโฆI see.”
Regret spread through the crowd.
Lost Ancient Magic Technology?
Hearing that, Huelim fell into deep thought.
Semilith probably knows exactly how that technology works, after all, she can cast such spells directly without relying on any Magical Device.
But as soon as she thought of that, Huelim quickly shook her head.
Even if she knew Semilith had such knowledge, it wasnโt in her nature to ask Semilith for favors. Besides, did Semilith not already know that most Ancient Magic Technology had been lost to the world above ground? Of course she did. And even so, she chose not to get involvedโthere must be a reason for that. And when it comes to understanding this world, the Six Gods of Tiramshuin know more than anyone.
To say the Six Gods care nothing for the fate of the lower realms is utter nonsense. From the very beginning, the Six Gods have protected this world, and this worldโthe lower realmsโare its very foundation. If even the Six Gods havenโt acted on this, there must be some hidden flaw in meddling that nobody has noticedโฆ
“Alright, alright, no need to be so disappointed, everyone. Like I said before, if you want to go far on the path of magic, mastering the basics of all the elemental spells will help you immensely!”
“This is about laying your foundationโthe stronger your foundation, the smoother your future path will be. The other six elements might seem useless to you, but in fact, magic is all interconnected. Understanding other spells will let you make connections and deepen your grasp of your own magic.”
Colletteโs explanation finally got the students to accept, at least for now, that they had to learn all seven First-Tier Magic spells.
“Very good~ Looks like everyone understands now. So, since we still have time today, why donโt you all try practicing these seven spells? See if you can sense mana. If thereโs anything you donโt understand about the spells, just ask me!”
“Oh, and if youโve already learned a spell, you can practice it on your own over there. Of course, if you have any questions about magic, feel free to ask me.”
“Collette-sensei, I have a questionโI donโt quite understand this magic circuit.”
“Where, where? Let me take a look. Oh, hereโsee, it runs like thisโฆ”
“Collette-sensei, I have a question too. Are there any requirements for how to pronounce this incantation?”
“There arenโt any, actually. Or rather, there canโt be, since every personโs body is different. So even with the same spell, the way you chant it will naturally differ. Youโll need to work it out for yourselfโฆ”
“Collette-sensei, I have a question.”
“Collette-sensei, I have a question too.”
“Collette-senseiโฆ”
Watching Collette move among the students, patiently answering their questions, Huelim suddenly realized the difference between her and Semilith.
If Semilith stood at the pinnacle of magic, reaching straight to the very essence of magic itself, then Collette, as a magic instructor, possessed the ability to extract and deliver just the right amount of knowledge from the vast sea of magic for students to digest.
Every discipline, in the end, is unfathomably deep. But that depth is impossible for beginners to absorb all at once. Thatโs why knowledge is divided into beginner, intermediate, advanced, and master levelsโso even a novice can progress step by step toward the core.
Even if the magic Semilith taught her was perhaps the most perfect form of its kind in the world, Semilith herself was not a teacher by profession and lacked the ability to convey such profound knowledge directly.
So, most of the time, Huelim relied on her own ability to comprehend the magic Semilith taught her. As for how close her understanding matched the magicโs original power, she simply didnโt know.
But Semilith had told her she had great talent, so Huelim figured her results shouldnโt be too far offโฆ
Thinking this, Huelim realized this was a chanceโshe could ask Collette for guidance and perhaps gain a standard to judge herself by.
So, she raised her hand as well.
“Collette-sensei, I have a questionโฆ”
Before long, the school day was over.
Before the students were dismissed, Collette addressed everyone, “Students, if you want to learn a particular type of magic, itโs much easier to practice in the right environment. After school, you should try finding such a place.”
As expected from a professionalโHuelim had only realized this herself after her mother pointed it out to her. For Collette, though, it was just common sense in teaching.
Huelim couldnโt help but feel impressed.
The crowd gradually dispersed as the students began heading off campus.
“Huelim, wait a moment, please.”
Hearing someone call out behind her, Huelim stopped and turned around, only to see Collette following with her staff in hand.
“Collette-sensei? Is there something you need?”
“Wellโฆ do you have a moment right now, Huelim?”
“โฆAs long as it wonโt take too long, itโs fine.”
Huelim replied.
It wasnโt like she really had anything urgent to do, after all.
“Thatโs greatโdonโt worry, it wonโt take long.”
Huelim followed Collette to the faculty lounge, where they wouldnโt be disturbed.
“Collette-sensei, what did you want to talk to me about?”
Huelim asked.
“Well, before that, may I ask you something? It wasnโt convenient during class.”
“A question? Of courseโyouโve got me curious what it is.”
“Ah, Huelim, youโre so easy to talk toโthat makes me very happy~!”
Collette beamed.
“Thenโฆ may I ask, Huelim, Orrubet Hayeralโwhat is he to you?”
