“Next up is illumination.”
Because Kolite didn’t signal her to stop, Hulim continued with her demonstration.
A dazzling white light shone from Hulim’s fingertips. Even in such bright weather, the glow was strikingly vivid.
“She really pulled it off, a second spell!”
“Hulim is amazing!”
The crowd broke into excited chatter, admiring voices echoing through the assembly—yet to one particular girl, those words stung harshly.
She stared unblinking at Hulim, anger and frustration burning inside her, mixed with a flush of embarrassment that colored her cheeks.
She’d lost again?
The worst part was, just moments ago, she had boasted so confidently, even declared her own victory… And now? The slap to her face came so fast it was dizzying!
She felt like a clown. The whole time, the other side must have been laughing at her inside, right?
What should she do? So humiliating! She wished she could just disappear!
Most important of all—
Why had she lost to her again!!!
Damn it, Hulim, how dare you look down on me! There’s no way I’m letting this go!
“Wow! That’s the third one!”
“Is that a non-elemental spell?”
As Fulan fumed and blushed inwardly, Hulim finished demonstrating all three spells.
“Kolite-sensei, is that enough?” Kolite looked deeply at Hulim, then her face blossomed into a sweet smile.
“Of course~! Thank you for your demonstration, Hulim. You may return~!”
Hulim bowed and returned to her spot in the crowd.
But as soon as she reached her place, her instincts, honed through years of combat training, warned her of a strong gaze burning into her back. She turned, meeting a pair of eyes—slightly reddened, even glistening with tears.
“Hmph!”
Their eyes met for just an instant, and the owner of that glare gave a cold snort and snapped her head away.
Hulim: “…”
What is she doing? Did I offend her somehow? She was acting like this earlier, too.
Hulim couldn’t figure it out and shook her head, deciding not to dwell on it. Well, as long as she’s not an enemy, it doesn’t matter what she does.
Fulan, her head stubbornly turned away, never let Hulim leave her peripheral vision. When she saw Hulim had stopped looking her way, she only grew more upset inside.
What’s that supposed to mean, huh?! She even turned around just to look at me—was that payback for before? It must be, right? Damn it, Hulim, I definitely won’t let this go!
“Looks like only three students have mastered magic so far~!” Kolite, seeing no other hands raised, spoke in a tone that sounded regretful—but quickly brightened into a radiant smile:
“Hm! That’s more than I expected, wonderful~!”
So is that supposed to mean it’s a lot or not?
For this mysterious new teacher with such an inscrutable personality, the students couldn’t help but silently grumble in their hearts. Of course, Kolite had no idea what the students were thinking and simply continued with her lesson.
“Since three of you already have control over magic, I’m sure everyone here has some basic understanding of it.”
“In our world, magic is classified into seven elemental attributes: wind, fire, water, earth, light, darkness, and none. Each of you should at least have an affinity for one type of element—just like Ande and Fulan demonstrated. Judging from the spells they cast, it’s clear they have affinities for fire and wind, respectively.”
“Of course, there are also a few who possess multiple affinities, like Hulim.”
At that, everyone glanced at Hulim again, unable to help themselves.
“Next, the first thing all of you need to do is find out your own magic affinity, just like those three—”
“Kolite-sensei!”
A boy in the front row suddenly raised his hand, interrupting Kolite.
“Yes, do you have a question?” Kolite asked, smiling.
“Which attribute do you have, sensei? Can you show us your magic?”
At those words, the other students looked on with eager eyes.
That’s right—if she’s a magic instructor, it was only natural she’d show the students her own magic, wasn’t it?
“Oh dear~! Oh dear~! I suppose I have no choice, hmm… Since you all want to see, I’ll give you a demonstration. You won’t really pay attention in class until you’ve seen a real display, will you?”
At Kolite’s agreement, the students immediately perked up.
“Really?!”
“What kind of magic does sensei use?” “It’s gotta be a second-tier spell, right? She’s a teacher after all—second-tier should be a breeze…”
“All right, all right, everyone calm down. Move to the edge of the field.”
Kolite didn’t cast her spell right away. She first had everyone back away to the edges of the practice field.
“Huh? The field’s still huge, why do we need to move?”
“Maybe sensei’s worried she’ll accidentally hit us?”
“No way, how big could a second-tier spell’s range really be?”
Despite their doubts, the students did as they were told and retreated to the field’s edge. In an instant, the wide open field was left with only Kolite standing at the center.
“Everyone~, watch closely~, this is your teacher’s magic~!”
Kolite gripped her staff in her right hand, raised it above her head, and after shouting to the crowd, began chanting in a rapid, low voice:
